Background: The prognosis of stroke patients can be improved by adherence to clinical guidelines.

Objective: To analyse the current state of organisation of prehospital stroke treatment in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with a focus on guideline adherence.

Materials And Methods: All medical directors of emergency medical services (MDEMS) in Germany ( = 178), Austria ( = 9) and Switzerland ( = 32) were invited to complete an anonymous online survey (unipark.

Study Goal: The study goals were to analyze the course and compare it with patients who were only resuscitated manually as well as to record the influencing factors in patients in whom the mechanical chest compression aid LUCAS2™ was used as an add-on treatment at the NEF Innsbruck.

Material And Methodology: Retrospective history data analysis of patients in the study period from 01.01.

Synergistic effects of fibrinolytic and additional antithrombotic treatment during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest of assumed cardiac origin were evaluated retrospectively. Data were drawn from electronic files of the physician-staffed Emergency Medical Services Tyrol. During a 22-month observation period 53 adult patients were treated with tenecteplase (mean 7641 IU), 19 (32.

Background: Human and vehicle resource management indicates a good emergency medical system (EMS). Frequently, an emergency medical technician (EMT) is the first responder to the emergency, which negates the necessity for an emergency physician (EP) and is just as sensible as handing over a stable patient to the EMT for transport to the hospital. The Austrian EMS is utilized by EMTs, in cases of potential life-threatening emergencies the dispatch center dispatches an additional team with an on-board EP.

Background: During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, the entire emergency rescue system was confronted with major challenges. Starting on 15 March, all tourists were asked to leave the State of Tyrol, Austria. The main goal of the efforts was to ensure the usual quality of emergency medical care while reducing the physical contact during emergency interventions on site.

Prediction of large vessel occlusion (LVO) is highly relevant for accurate prehospital transportation triage. The Austrian Prehospital Stroke Scale (APSS) score for LVO prediction was developed using critical synthesis of previously published LVO-scores. The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of the APSS and compare it to other LVO-scores.

During the last 20 years Austrian prehospital emergency medical services (EMS) have significantly improved. The structure and organization of Austrian EMS comply with European standards but training requirements for prehospital EMS physicians are insufficient when compared with other countries. Although some EMS systems follow the German or Swiss postgraduate training concepts, the legal requirements in Austria defining the scope of mandatory training for physicians in the prehospital setting are only minimal.

Background: Laryngeal tube (LT) application by rescue personnel as an alternate airway during the early stages of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is still subject of debate. We evaluated ease of handling and efficacy of ventilation administered by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) using LT and bag-valve-mask (BVM) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation of patients with OHCA.

Methods: An open prospective randomized multicenter study was conducted at six emergency medical services centers over 18 months.

Introduction: The aim of the EuReCa ONE study was to determine the incidence, process, and outcome for out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) throughout Europe.

Methods: This was an international, prospective, multi-centre one-month study. Patients who suffered an OHCA during October 2014 who were attended and/or treated by an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) were eligible for inclusion in the study.

Introduction: Despite numerous efforts, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survival has not significantly increased in recent decades. The first telephone-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (T-CPR) studies were published in the 1980s, but only in the last decade has T‑CPR been implemented in dispatch centers. T‑CPR is still not available in all dispatch centers and no national or international T‑CPR recommendations are available.

Background: There is only limited information on patient satisfaction with emergency medical services (EMS). The aim of this multicentre survey was to evaluate patient satisfaction in five out-of-hospital physician-based EMS in Austria and Switzerland.

Methods: The psychometrically tested and standardized questionnaire 'patient satisfaction in out-of-hospital emergency care' was used for this survey.

Background: Intravenous thrombolysis for ischaemic stroke remains underused worldwide. We aimed to assess whether our statewide comprehensive stroke management programme would improve thrombolysis use and clinical outcome in patients.

Methods: In 2008-09, we designed the Tyrol Stroke Pathway, which provided information campaigns for the public and standardised the entire treatment pathway from stroke onset to outpatient rehabilitation.

Article Synopsis
  • Out-of-hospital emergency physicians in Austria are required to undergo mandatory training and refresher courses for advanced life support (ALS) skills, with this study focusing on their knowledge retention based on participation in ERC-ALS courses.
  • The study involved 807 participants who answered multiple-choice questions about ALS, analyzing results in relation to their previous training and various control factors.
  • Results indicated that those who attended ERC-ALS courses had better ALS knowledge retention, with age, regularity of emergency work, and recent hands-on resuscitations also influencing performance.

Adults: Administer chest compressions (minimum 100/min, minimum 5 cm depth) at a ratio of 30:2 with ventilation (tidal volume 500-600 ml, inspiration time 1 s, F(I)O₂ if possible 1.0). Avoid any interruptions in chest compressions.
