Flexible Passive Sensor Patch with Contactless Readout for Measurement of Human Body Temperature.

A passive flexible patch for human skin temperature measurement based on contact sensing and contactless interrogation is presented. The patch acts as an RLC resonant circuit embedding an inductive copper coil for magnetic coupling, a ceramic capacitor as the temperature-sensing element and an additional series inductor. The temperature affects the capacitance of the sensor and consequently the resonant frequency of the RLC circuit.

Decoupling of scandium and rare earth elements in organic (nano)particle-rich boreal rivers draining the Fennoscandian Shield.

Only few datasets on scandium (Sc) and rare earths and yttrium (REY) in rivers are available and the behaviour of Sc in the hydrosphere is poorly understood. We determined Sc and REY concentrations in the dissolved fraction of twelve boreal rivers in Sweden, which show low conductivity, circumneutral pH and elevated dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Scandium concentrations vary between 189 and 1170 pmol/l and are at the high end of the range reported for rivers worldwide.

Optimization of an Impact-Based Frequency Up-Converted Piezoelectric Vibration Energy Harvester for Wearable Devices.

This work presents a novel development of the impact-based mechanism for piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters. More precisely, the effect of an impacting mass on a cantilever piezoelectric transducer is studied both in terms of the tip mass value attached to the cantilever and impact position to find an optimal condition for power extraction. At first, the study is carried out by means of parametric analyses at varying tip mass and impact position on a unimorph MEMS cantilever, and a suitable physical interpretation of the associated electromechanical response is given.

Vacuum intraoperative specimen mammography: A novel technique.

Objective: Intraoperative specimen mammography (ISM) is a diffuse technique that allows surgeons to check specimens immediately after lumpectomy. Although the specimen is slightly compressed, the radiological image can be distorted by tissue overlap, and this may affect the evaluation of tumour borders, resulting in extension of the lumpectomy. As ISM may be less precise due to inadequate compression, a vacuum effect was applied to the specimen to increase the precision of margin detection.
