Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are self-assembled systems formed from oppositely charged polymers, used to create hydrogels for cell culture. This work was aimed at additive manufacturing 3D hydrogels made of a PEC between chitosan (Cs) and alginate, as well as their investigation for in vitro 3D ovarian cancer modeling. PEC hydrogels stability in cell culture medium demonstrated their suitability for long-term cell culture applications.

Ambrosia beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) are fungus-farming woodborers that can cause damage to the trees they colonize. Some of these beetles target stressed plants that emit ethanol, and management strategies have proposed using ethanol-injected trees as trap trees to monitor or divert dispersing adult females away from valuable crops. In this study, we used container-grown trees from 8 species to compare the effect of ethanol injection versus flooding on ambrosia beetle host selection and colonization success.

The sensitivity of radiochromic films to UV-blue light is increasingly considered for light dosimetry purposes, owing to their bidimensional detection capabilities and ease of use. While film response to radiation intensity has been widely investigated by commercial scanners, spatial resolution studies remain scarce, especially for small field-of-view applications. These are of growing interest due to the antimicrobial or photo-bio-stimulating effects of UV-blue light sources in in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models, where precise knowledge of irradiation conditions with adequate spatial resolution is crucial.

Regenerative medicine is continuously looking for new natural, biocompatible and possibly biodegradable materials, but also mechanically compliant. Insects have major impacts on forest ecosystems, from herbivory and soil-nutrient cycling to killing trees at a large scale. Forest insects from temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions have evolved strategies to respond to seasonality; for example, by entering diapause, to mitigate adversity and to synchronize lifecycles with favorable periods. Here, we show that distinct functional groups of forest insects; that is, canopy dwellers, trunk-associated species, and soil/litter-inhabiting insects, express a variety of diapause strategies, but do not show systematic differences in diapause strategy depending on functional group.

This Scientific Opinion covers plant health risks posed by plants of and imported from the United Kingdom (UK) as: (a) bundles of budwood/graftwood; (b) 1- to 2-year-old whips, seedlings or transplants; (c) bundles of 1- to 2-year-old cell grown plants; (d) 1- to 7-year-old bare root single plants; and (e) up to 25-year-old single plants in pots, taking into account the available scientific information provided by the UK.
