Around 80% of persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) present symptoms of dysphagia. Although cognitive impairment may contribute to dysphagia, few studies have investigated the association between the PD neuropsychological profile and objective measures of swallowing dysfunction. Since the swallowing function comprises involuntary but also voluntary actions, we hypothesize that specific measures of attention and executive functions can be underlined in PD-related dysphagia.

The KEAP1/NRF2 pathway is a master regulator of several redox-sensitive genes implicated in the resistance of tumor cells against therapeutic drugs. The dysfunction of the KEAP1/NRF2 system has been correlated with neoplastic patients' outcomes and responses to conventional therapies. In lung tumors, the growth and the progression of cancer cells may also involve the intersection between the molecular NRF2/KEAP1 axis and other pathways, including NOTCH, with implications for antioxidant protection, survival of cancer cells, and drug resistance to therapies.

While extensive research has documented the cognitive changes associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), a relatively small portion of the empirical literature investigated the language abilities of individuals with PD. Recently, artificial intelligence applied to linguistic data has shown promising results in predicting the clinical diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders, but a deeper investigation of the current literature available on PD is lacking. This systematic review investigates the nature of language disorders in PD by assessing the contribution of machine learning (ML) to the classification of patients with PD.

Article Synopsis
  • - The non-fluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) is characterized by symptoms like apraxia of speech and expressive agrammatism, leading to varying speech-language difficulties among patients over time.
  • - There is ongoing debate about whether to classify subtypes of nfvPPA based on symptom presence, including 'primary progressive apraxia of speech' and 'progressive agrammatic aphasia', but overlapping features challenge clear distinctions.
  • - In a study involving 104 patients, researchers linked specific brain atrophy to varying speech-language symptoms, identifying that the neural correlates for both apraxia of speech and expressive agrammatism are located in the left posterior inferior frontal

Background And Objectives: In Italy, approximately 650 individuals receive a diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) every year. Unfortunately, the frequency with which patients are referred to speech-language services is suboptimal, likely due to skepticism regarding the value of speech-language therapy in the context of neurodegeneration.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a virtual survey of speech and language therapists (SLTs) across Italy, to collect information about the assessment, intervention and management of patients with PPA.

The behavioral variant of Frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) has typically a progressive course with cognitive and behavioral changes that manifests between 50 and 70 years. Very early-onset bvFTD with rapid progression is a rare syndrome under the frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) umbrella that has been associated with a variety of protein deposition and genetic mutations. We present a case of a 24-year-old man who developed behavioral symptoms and progressed with severe cognitive impairment and functional loss within months.

The prevalence of late-life depression (LLD) depends on the study sample, measurements, and diagnostic approaches. We estimated the 30 item-Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30) accuracy against the gold standard LLD diagnosis made with the Semi-structured Clinical Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV-TR Axis I Disorders, focusing on the prevalence of a late-life major depressive disorder (MDD), in a population-based sample of 843 subjects aged>65 years, subdivided into three groups: normal cognition, subjective memory complaints, and mild cognitive impairment. At the optimal cut-off score (≥4), the GDS-30 showed 65.

Background And Purpose: In older age, physical and cognitive declines have been shown to occur simultaneously or consequent to one another, and several operational definitions have been proposed to consider the co-presence of the two declines; for example, "Motoric cognitive risk syndrome" (MCR) has been proposed as a definition for the coexistence of slow gait plus subjective cognitive complaints. Given the increasing interest in MCR and its potential role as both biomarker and therapeutic target, we aimed to estimate its prevalence in a large cohort of non-demented older subjects, and to examine the associations between physical status, global cognitive dysfunction, and impairment in various cognitive domains in MCR.

Methods: A population-based sample of 1041 older people in Southern Italy (mean age 75.

Over the past 15 years, several biological and pathological characteristics proved their significance in pediatric anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) prognostic stratification. However, the identification of new non-invasive disease biomarkers, relying on the most important disease mechanisms, is still necessary. In recent years, plasmatic circulating small extracellular vesicles (S-EVs) gathered great importance both as stable biomarker carriers and active players in tumorigenesis.

Plasma exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) are considered as valid circulating biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), the most commonly used technique to assess circulating miRNA levels, requires a normalization step involving uniformly expressed endogenous miRNAs. However, there is still no consensus on reference miRNAs for plasma exosomal miRNA abundance normalization.
