1. Enterocytes, isolated from the proximal jejunum and distal ileum of normal and prednisolone-treated rats, were homogenized and fractionated by isopycnic centrifugation on sucrose density gradients. The distributions of marker enzymes for the principal subcellular organelles, RNA and protein were determined and related to the activities per enterocyte.

1. Enterocytes, isolated from the proximal jejinum and distal ileum of the rat, were homogenized and their organelles separated by isopycnic centrifugation on continuous sucrose density gradients. The distributions of marker enzymes for the principal organelles, RNA and protein were determined in the sucrose gradients and related to the activities per entercocyte.

Portions of closed jejunal biopsies from the dog were homogenised and their organelles separated by isopycnic centrifugation on continuous sucrose density gradients. The distributions of marker enzymes for the principal organelles were determined using highly sensitive assay procedures. The following organelles, with assayed marker enzymes and modal densities between brackets were characterised: peroxisomes (catalase, 1.

Loss of body weight accompanied by cannibalism occurred in obese mice (genotype, ob/ob) at seven months of age. The onset was sudden. The animals had accompanying abnormalities of their incisor teeth.

DL-alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine methyl ester hydrochloride affected the hyperphagia and hypothermia characteristic of the genetically obese mouse (genotype, ob/ob) throughout an experimental period of 5 days. Intraperitoneal injections of 100 mg/kg body weight, daily, resulted in a significant increase in the average daily food consumption by 60 per cent, already elevated 35 per cent above that of lean litter-mates. The drug, administered at the same dose, caused a similar percentage elevation of food intake in the lean litter-mates.

Sixty-five infertile patients with moderate or severe endometriosis were treated with conservative surgery. Acosta's classification was used to demonstrate the extent of disease. In 48 women whose partners were normally fertile, 65% conceived, and in 17 whose partners were deficient, 35% achieved pregnancy.

Dosthistromin, an anthraquinone derivative produced by the pine-blight fungus, Dothistroma pini, inhibits the growth of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Bacillus megaterium. At growth inhibitory concentrations, dothistromin strongly inhibits incorporation of [3H]uridine into RNA of both species. With B.

With the use of microelectrodes, membrane potential (MP) was measured in mouse thyroid glands in vitro. A basal resting MP of about -39 mV was confirmed. The initial effect of feeding a low-iodine diet (6-12 days) was hyperpolarization, up to -47 m V; chronic low-iodine diet led to depolarization.

Reproductive function is impaired in the genetically obese (C57 B1/6J) ob/ob mouse. Serum LH, FSH, and testosterone concentrations were assessed in male ob/ob and lean littermates from 39 to 78 days of age. The lean animals demonstrated a three-fold rise in serum LH between 39 and 45 days of age that preceded a steep increase in serum testosterone which peaked at age 70 days.
