Physician inpatient handoffs-Patient and physician outcomes: A systematic review.

Background: Prior reviews have shown that interventions to improve inpatient handoffs are inconsistently associated with improvement in patient outcomes. This systematic review examines the effectiveness of inpatient handoff interventions on outcomes affecting patients and physicians, including objective measures when reported (PROSPERO ID: CRD42022309326).

Methods: Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched on January 13th, 2022.

Clinical Evaluation of the Combination of rhPDGF-BB and Xenogeneic Bone Substitutes for Treatment of Severe Periodontal Intrabony Defects: A Case Series.

Growth factors are considered an important component for periodontal wound healing and a key element in the periodontal regeneration triad. Steroid-Refractory Insulin Autoimmune Syndrome Treated With Rituximab and Continuous Glucose Monitoring.

A 67-year-old female presented with severe hypoglycemia with a blood glucose of 34 mg/dl five hours after having dinner. She did not have diabetes and had no access to oral hypoglycemic agents, insulin, or any other drug known to cause hypoglycemia. She was a known case of primary hypothyroidism euthyroid on treatment.

Effect of oral versus intramuscular Vitamin D replacement in apparently healthy adults with Vitamin D deficiency.

Hypocalcemic Cardiomyopathy and Pseudohypoparathyroidism Due to Severe Vitamin D Deficiency.

Hypocalcemic cardiomyopathy is a rare entity. We describe a patient with severe heart failure, decreased ejection fraction and global hypokinesia documented on echocardiogram, associated with severe hypocalcemia, very low vitamin D status, increased QT intervals, increased BNP (serum brain natriuretic peptide) levels and CPK (creatine phosphokinase) levels. All these defects reversed on treatment with vitamin D and calcium within a few days without any specific cardiac intervention.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Investigations Using Animal Models of Emphysema.

Animal models of disease help accelerate the translation of basic science discoveries to the bedside, because they permit experimental interrogation of mechanisms at relatively high throughput, while accounting for the complexity of an intact organism. From the groundbreaking observation of emphysema-like alveolar destruction after direct instillation of elastase in the lungs to the more clinically relevant model of airspace enlargement induced by chronic exposure to cigarette smoke, animal models have advanced our understanding of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) function. Experimental in vivo models that, at least in part, replicate clinical human phenotypes facilitate the translation of mechanistic findings into individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and with AAT deficiency.

Fetal Hyperthyroidism: Intrauterine Treatment with Carbimazole in Two Siblings.

Hyperthyroidism can manifest very early in fetal life (fetal thyrotoxicosis) or immediately after birth (neonatal thyrotoxicosis). The authors describe outcome of pregnancies in a woman with Graves' disease who received medical management and underwent subtotal thyroidectomy. The first pregnancy resulted in macerated stillbirth at 32 wk.

Fetal and neonatal thyrotoxicosis.

Fetal thyrotoxicosis is a rare disease occurring in 1 out of 70 pregnancies with Grave's disease or in 1 out of 4000-50,000 deliveries. The mortality is 12-20%, usually from heart failure, but other complications are tracheal compression, infections and thrombocytopenia. It results from transfer of thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins from mother to fetus through the placenta.

In vitro bonding effectiveness of three different one-step self-etch adhesives with additional enamel etching.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of additional enamel etching on the shear bond strength of three self-etch adhesives.

Methods: Class II box type cavities were made on extracted human molars. Teeth were randomly divided into one control group of etch and rinse adhesive and three test groups of self-etch adhesives (Clearfil S3 Bond, Futurabond NR, Xeno V).

Primary leiomyosarcoma of breast in an adolescent girl: a case report and review of the literature.

Leiomyosarcoma of the breast is a rare neoplasm, primarily reported in older women. Only 44 cases have been reported in world literature and to the best of our knowledge, no case has been reported from India till date. We report a case of primary breast leiomyosarcoma in an adolescent girl who underwent a lumpectomy for rapidly increasing lump in the left breast.

Microleakage of bonded amalgam restorations using different adhesive agents with dye under vacuum: an in vitro study.

Aim: In an effort to minimize tooth preparation, yet provide additional retention to compromised tooth structure, bonded amalgam restorations were introduced. Various resin-based adhesives have been tried earlier under bonded amalgam restorations. Still there are controversies regarding the outcome of bonded amalgam restorations regarding their adaptability to the tooth structure and microleakage.

Non-insulinoma pancreatogenous hypoglycemia syndrome.

We present the case of a 55 yr female who had recurrent severe hypoglycemic attacks with neuroglycopenic symptoms and altered sensorium including coma. The hypoglycemic episodes were not related to fasting. The hypoglycemia was hyperinsulinemic but all imaging modalities for insulinoma were negative.

Hemophagocytic syndrome secondary to cytomegalovirus infection in an infant.

Virus associated hemophagocytic syndrome is a non-neoplastic, generalized histiocytic proliferation with prominent hemophagocytosis associated with a systemic viral infection. We report a case of cytomegalovirus (CMV) associated hemophagocytic syndrome in a 2 month old male child presenting with rashes, fever, hepatosplenomegaly, cervical lymphadenopathy and pancytopenia. Fine needle aspiration cytology and biopsy from cervical lymph nodes revealed prominent hemophagocytosis.

Diagnosis of adult rhabdomyoma by fine needle aspiration cytology: a report of 2 cases.

Background: Adult rhabdomyoma (ARh) is a rare, benign tumor originating in striated muscle cells. Ninety-three percent of the tumors occur in the head and neck region and sometimes mimic malignant tumors clinically. The preoperative correct diagnosis of this tumor is important as it can help in deciding on management.

Transient neonatal diabetes due to activating mutation in the ABCC8 gene encoding SUR1.

We report a 2 month male child presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and seizures treated with intravenous fluids and intravenous insulin infusion till the ketoacidosis was reversed, thereafter responding well to sulphonylureas and at age of 13 months going into complete remission. At age of 11 months developmental delay in the form of negative neck holding and inability to sit without support was seen. The child is 3 years of age now, euglycemic without any insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents but has severe developmental delay.

Adenolipoma of the thyroid gland.

Thyrolipoma or adenolipoma of the thyroid gland is defined as a thyroid adenoma containing mature fat tissue. It is a rare encapsulated lesion. A case of a 35-year-old female presenting with swelling in the neck that was diagnosed as adenolipoma is described because of its extreme rarity.

Efficacy of Agnique MMF monomolecular surface film against Anopheles stephensi breeding in urban habitats in India.

Efficacy of Agnique MMF, a monomolecular film formulation, was tested against immatures of Anopheles stephensi, an urban malaria vector in India, in simulated and natural habitats. Simulated field trials carried out in cement tanks showed 100% inhibition of adult emergence for up to 1 wk at 0.4 ml/m2 and up to 3 wk at 1 ml/m2.

An efficient synthesis and biological activity of substituted p-benzoquinones.

An efficient synthesis of 2,5-diarylamino-3,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone derivatives has been achieved by condensing mono substituted anilines with tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone in presence of fused sodium acetate as condensing agent under microwave irradiation without any solvent. All the synthesized compounds were tested for their antibacterial and antitumour activity using standard drugs.

Effectiveness of mosquito nets treated with a tablet formulation of deltamethrin for malaria control in a hyperendemic tribal area of Sundargarh District, Orissa, India.

A village-scale trial on the efficacy of mosquito nets treated with a tablet formulation of deltamethrin (K-OTAB) against malaria in comparison to untreated nets or no net was conducted in Sundargarh District of Orissa, India, which is characterized by perennial transmission with Plasmodium falciparum accounting for more than 80% of malaria cases. Three villages with similar topographical and epidemiological situations were selected and randomly assigned to 3 arms of the study: treated net, untreated net, and no net. Distribution of nets, based on a sleeping pattern survey, was carried out to cover 100% of the population in treated-net and untreated-net villages.
