The Role of Lifestyle and Environmental Factors in the Pathogenesis of Multiple Myeloma.

Objectives: The study evaluated the impact of lifestyle and environmental exposure on the etiology of multiple myeloma (MM).

Methods: A multicenter case-control study was conducted in 20 hematology centers and in 5 outpatient clinics in Poland. The questionnaire on exposure to potential risk factors including sociodemographic data, lifestyle, and environmental factors was completed.

Response to anti-SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines in multiple myeloma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients.

Multiple myeloma (MM) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients have increased morbidity and mortality rates of COVID-19 due to immunosuppression associated with the disease and ongoing therapy. The same immune impairment accompanying CLL and MM also affects suboptimal vaccine response. The study assessed the effectiveness of the humoral and T cell-mediated immunity following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (using either BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273) in short-term (2-5 weeks after second dose) and long-term follow-up (12 weeks after vaccination).

Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia and Essential Thrombocythemia: So Different and yet Somehow Similar-Cases Series and a Review of the Literature.

This article collects several published cases in which immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is followed by essential thrombocythemia (ET) and vice versa. This surprising clinical condition is possible, but very rare and difficult to diagnose and manage. We have made an attempt to analyse the possible causes of the sequential appearance of ITP and ET taking into consideration the following: alteration of the thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor, the role of autoimmunity and inflammation, and cytokine modulation.

Whole Time Series Data Streams Clustering: Dynamic Profiling of the Electricity Consumption.

Data from smart grids are challenging to analyze due to their very large size, high dimensionality, skewness, sparsity, and number of seasonal fluctuations, including daily and weekly effects. With the data arriving in a sequential form the underlying distribution is subject to changes over the time intervals. Time series data streams have their own specifics in terms of the data processing and data analysis because, usually, it is not possible to process the whole data in memory as the large data volumes are generated fast so the processing and the analysis should be done incrementally using sliding windows.

Serum betatrophin and irisin levels in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development is a complex process with well-known risk factors, however the role of betatrophin/angiopoietin-like protein 8 and irisin has been poorly investigated thus far. The aim of this study is to measure betatrophin and irisin serum levels in HCC, cirrhotic patients and controls, assess their relationship with cancer etiology and grade, metabolic abnormalities and liver dysfunction severity. Serum betatrophin and irisin concentrations were measured with commercially available ELISA kits in 69 cirrhotic patients with HCC, 24 patients with non-viral cirrhosis and 20 healthy volunteers.

Serum visfatin and vaspin levels in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common liver cancer, accountable for 90% cases. Visfatin and vaspin are adipocytokines with various suggested functions and proven significant correlations between BMI and percentage of body fat. The aim was to assess visfatin and vaspin serum levels in HCC patients and controls, compare their levels in patients with different cancer etiology and grade assessed according to the Barcelona-Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system.

The role of metabolic disorders in the pathogenesis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a pregnancy-specific liver disorder which typically commences in the late second or third trimester and resolves within 48 hours after delivery. It is characterized by mild to severe pruritus, without any specific dermatologic features, elevated liver enzymes and increased serum bile acids (BA). The etiology of ICP is still not completely explicit.

Underrated enemy - from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease to cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is intrahepatic ectopic lipid deposition which is present despite a lack of other causes of secondary hepatic fat accumulation. It is the most common chronic liver disorder in the welldeveloped countries. NAFLD is a multidisciplinary disease that affects various systems and organs and is inextricably linked to simple obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and overt diabetes mellitus type 2.

Art therapist's perceptions of the role of the art medium in the treatment of bereaved clients in art therapy.

The exploratory study's aim was to examine how art therapists perceive the role of the art medium in the treatment of bereaved clients. Eight Israeli art therapists reflected on this topic through drawings and interviews. Qualitative analysis identified three major roles, specifically art as: (1) a space for the client's grief work; (2) a communication channel that impacts the art therapist's experience and therapeutic relationship; and (3) a shared space where client and therapist create a new narrative.

Strain-induced ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetic LuMnO3 thin films.

Single phase and strained LuMnO(3) thin films are discovered to display coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders. A large moment ferromagnetism (≈1μ(B)), which is absent in bulk samples, is shown to display a magnetic moment distribution that is peaked at the highly strained substrate-film interface. We further show that the strain-induced ferromagnetism and the antiferromagnetic order are coupled via an exchange field, therefore demonstrating strained rare-earth manganite thin films as promising candidate systems for new multifunctional devices.

Detection of cancerous masses in mammograms by template matching: optimization of template brightness distribution by means of evolutionary algorithm.

Optimization of brightness distribution in the template used for detection of cancerous masses in mammograms by means of correlation coefficient is presented. This optimization is performed by the evolutionary algorithm using an auxiliary mass classifier. Brightness along the radius of the circularly symmetric template is coded indirectly by its second derivative.

[Cutaneous melanoma during pregnancy--a case report].

Cutaneous melanoma is a tumour which has the highest increase of incidence per year. In Poland, the process reaches 10%. In this essay, a case of cutaneus melanoma co-existing with pregnancy was presented.
