There is growing interest in transcriptomic points of departure (tPOD) values from in vitro experiments as an alternative to animal test method. The study objective was to calculate tPODs in rainbow trout gill cells (RTgill-W1 following OECD 249) exposed to pesticides, and to evaluate how these values compare to fish acute and chronic toxicity data. Cells were exposed to one fungicide (chlorothalonil), ten herbicides (atrazine, glyphosate, imazethapyr, metolachlor, diquat, s-metolachlor, AMPA, dicamba, dimethenamid-P, metribuzin), eight insecticides (chlorpyrifos, diazinon, permethrin, carbaryl, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, chlorantraniliprole), and OECD 249 positive control 3,4-dichloroaniline.

Climate change, population growth, and agricultural intensification are increasing nitrogen (N) inputs, while driving the loss of inland water bodies that filter excess N. However, the interplay between N inputs and water body dynamics, and its implications for water quality remain poorly understood. Analyzing data from 1995 to 2015 across China, here, we find a 71% reduction in the area of small (<10 m) water bodies (SWB), primarily in high-N-input agricultural regions.

Electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) production has emerged to be of global environmental public health concern. E-waste workers, who are frequently exposed to hazardous chemicals through occupational activities, face considerable health risks. To investigate the metabolic and exposomic changes in these workers, we analyzed whole blood samples from 100 male e-waste workers and 49 controls from the GEOHealth II project (2017-2018 in Accra, Ghana) using LC-MS/MS.

There is growing scientific and regulatory interest in transcriptomic points of departure (tPOD) values from high-throughput in vitro experiments. To further help democratize tPOD research, here we outline 'TPD-seq' which links microplate-based exposure methods involving cell lines for human (Caco-2, Hep G2) and environmental (rainbow trout RTgill-W1) health, with a commercially available RNA-seq kit, with a cloud-based bioinformatics tool (ExpressAnalyst.ca).

Environmental factors amplified by climate change contribute significantly to the global burden of disease, disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations, such as individuals with rare diseases. Researchers require innovative, dynamic data linkage methods to enable the development of risk prediction models, particularly for diseases like vasculitis with unknown aetiology but potential environmental triggers. In response, we present the Semantic Environmental and Rare Disease Data Integration Framework (SERDIF).

Monolayer 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) show high sensitivity to the local dielectric environment, leading to modulation of their optoelectronic properties. Here, we report on the formation of localized trions in a MoS/few-layer graphene van der Waals heterostructure. We performed temperature-dependent photoluminescence and Raman studies down to 80 K, to understand the mechanism for localized charge excitation, which shows contrasting behaviour with MoS/SiO.

Objectives: The overall aim of the current study was to quantify physical activity levels in inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRDs) and to explore their role in fatigue.

Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Lessening the Impact of Fatigue in IRDs (LIFT) trial of the personalized exercise program (PEP) intervention for fatigue. Participants with IRDs were recruited from 2017 to 2019 and the current analysis used fatigue, measured by the Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFS) and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and accelerometer measured physical activity data collected at baseline and at the 6-month follow-up.

Disease-monitoring in large vessel vasculitis (LVV) is challenging. Simultaneous F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) provides functional assessment of vascular inflammation alongside high-definition structural imaging with a relatively low burden of radiation exposure. Here, we investigate the ability of PET/MRI to monitor LVV disease activity longitudinally in a prospective cohort of patients with active LVV.

Hexagonal boron nitride (BN), with its atomically flat structure, excellent chemical stability, and large band gap energy (∼6 eV), serves as an exemplary 2D insulator in electronics. Additionally, it offers exceptional attributes for the growth and encapsulation of semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Current methodologies for producing BN thin films primarily involve exfoliating multi-layer or bulk crystals and thin film growth chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which entails the thermal decomposition and surface reaction of molecular precursors like ammonia boranes (NHBH) and borazine (BNH).

Efforts to use transcriptomics for toxicity testing have classically relied on the assumption that chemicals consistently produce characteristic transcriptomic signatures that are reflective of their mechanism of action. However, the degree to which transcriptomic responses are conserved across different test methodologies has seldom been explored. With increasing regulatory demand for New Approach Methods (NAMs) that use alternatives to animal models and high-content approaches such as transcriptomics, this type of comparative analysis is needed.

We demonstrate a simple droplet diagnostic approach to monitor the UiO-66 MOF (metal-organic framework) synthesis and its quality using the sessile droplet drying phenomenon. Drying a sessile droplet involves evaporation-driven hydrodynamic flow and particle-nature-dependent self-assembled deposition. In general, the MOF synthesis process involves different sizes and physicochemical nature of particles in every synthesis stage.

Expert testimony is only admissible in common-law systems if it will potentially assist the trier of fact. In order for a forensic-voice-comparison expert's testimony to assist a trier of fact, the expert's forensic voice comparison should be more accurate than the trier of fact's speaker identification. "Speaker identification in courtroom contexts - Part I" addressed the question of whether speaker identification by an individual lay listener (such as a judge) would be more or less accurate than the output of a forensic-voice-comparison system that is based on state-of-the-art automatic-speaker-recognition technology.

Indigenous peoples in Canada are disproportionately exposed to environmental contaminants and may face elevated health risks related to their unique cultural, spiritual, and economic relationships with the land, including the use of traditional food systems. However, to date, institutionalized approaches to assess risks to human and ecological health from contaminants have not been well developed or implemented with Indigenous community contexts in mind. There is regulatory interest in developing new approach methods for risk assessment, and thus an opportunity to increase their relevance to Indigenous communities in which they will be ultimately applied.
