Summary: The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is of an unprecedented magnitude and has made it challenging to properly treat patients with urgent or rare endocrine disorders. Little is known about the risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients with rare endocrine malignancies, such as pituitary carcinoma. Article Synopsis
  • Pituitary carcinomas are rare, aggressive tumors that may not respond to standard treatments like temozolomide (TMZ), leaving limited options for patients.
  • A case report highlights a patient with ACTH-secreting pituitary carcinoma who stabilized with a combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ipilimumab and nivolumab) after failing multiple therapies, including TMZ.
  • The findings suggest that immune checkpoint inhibitors could be a promising treatment avenue for pituitary carcinoma, as TMZ induces hypermutation that may make tumors more responsive to immunotherapy.
