Background: The role of a mixture of phlebotonics in the treatment of acute hemorrhoid crisis is investigated to test their efficacy.

Methods: One hundred and thirty-four consecutive patients with an acute hemorrhoidal crisis recruited in five colorectal units entered the study. Sixty-six of them were randomized to receive a mixture of diosmin, troxerutin and hesperidin (group A), and 68 a placebo (group B).

Correlation between Choline Peak at MR Spectroscopy and Calcium-Sensing Receptor Expression Level in Breast Cancer: A Preliminary Clinical Study.

Purpose: The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) is overexpressed in many pathological states including breast cancer. Since choline kinase may be activated in breast cancer cells by CaSR resulting in increased phosphocholine production, we sought to correlate the total choline peak in breast lesions as measured by in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) with the CaSR expression levels in surgical specimens.

Interactions of the antimalarial amodiaquine with lipid model membranes.

A detailed molecular description of the mechanism of action of the antimalarial drug amodiaquine (AQ) is still an open issue. To gain further insights on that, we studied the interactions of AQ with lipid model membranes composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylserine (DPPS) by spin labeling electron spin resonance (ESR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Both techniques indicate a coexistence of an ordered DPPS-rich domain with a disordered DPPC-rich domain in the binary DPPC/DPPS system.

Piperazine derivatives: synthesis, inhibition of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase and SAR studies.

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis NADH-dependent enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (MtInhA) catalyzes hydride transfer to long-chain enoyl thioester substrates. MtInhA is a member of the mycobacterial type II dissociated fatty acid biosynthesis system, and is the bona fide target for isoniazid, the most prescribed drug for tuberculosis treatment. Here, a series of piperazine derivatives was synthesized and screened as MtInhA inhibitors, which resulted in the identification of compounds with IC50 values in the submicromolar range.

Protective effects of resveratrol on hepatotoxicity induced by isoniazid and rifampicin via SIRT1 modulation.

Endogenous regulation of inflammatory pain by T-cell-derived opioids: when friend turns to foe.

Painful sensation is a hallmark of microbe-induced inflammation. This inflammatory pain is downregulated a few days after infection by opioids locally released by effector T lymphocytes generated in response to microbe-derived antigens. This review focuses on the endogenous regulation of inflammatory pain associated with adaptive T-cell response and puts in perspective the clinical consequences of the opioid-mediated analgesic activity of colitogenic T lymphocytes in inflammatory bowel disease.

Production of recombinant human annexin V by fed-batch cultivation.

Background: Annexin V, a 35.8 kDa intracellular protein, is a Ca⁺²-dependent phospholipid binding protein with high affinity to phosphatidylserine (PS), which is a well-known hallmark of apoptosis. Annexin V is a sensitive probe for PS exposure upon the cell membrane, and used for detection of apoptotic cells both in vivo and in vitro.

Gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of death for cancer worldwide, although geographical variations in incidence exist. Over the last decades, its incidence and mortality have gradually decreased in Western countries, while these have increased, or remained stable, in the other world regions. Gastric cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, with the only notable exception of Japan, where nationwide screening programs are enforced, due to local high incidence.

Methods: Between 2000 and 2007, 102 morbidly obese patients were referred to the Department of Surgery "Pietro Valdoni", "Sapienza" University of Rome, Policlinico "Umberto I°", Rome, Italy for malabsorptive surgery. All patients underwent derivative biliodigestive surgery after they had been reviewed by a team of surgeons, physicians, dieticians, and psychologists.

The kinetic mechanism of Human Thymidine Phosphorylase - a molecular target for cancer drug development.

Human Thymidine Phosphorylase (HTP), also known as the platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor (PD-ECGF) or gliostatin, catalyzes the reversible phosphorolysis of thymidine (dThd) to thymine and 2-deoxy-α-d-ribose-1-phosphate (2dR1P). HTP is a key enzyme in the pyrimidine salvage pathway involved in dThd homeostasis in cells. HTP is a target for anticancer drug development as its enzymatic activity promotes angiogenesis.

The yeast Dekkera bruxellensis is considered to be very well adapted to industrial environments, in Brazil, USA, Canada and European Countries, when different substrates are used in alcoholic fermentations. Our previous study described its fermentative profile with a sugarcane juice substrate. In this study, we have extended its physiological evaluation to fermentation situations by using sugarcane molasses as a substrate to replicate industrial working conditions.

Search for top squarks in R-parity-violating supersymmetry using three or more leptons and b-tagged jets.

A search for anomalous production of events with three or more isolated leptons and bottom-quark jets produced in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV is presented. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2012.

An adaptive process model of motor learning: insights for the teaching of motor skills.

This article presents an outline of a non-equilibrium model, in which motor learning is explained as a continuous process of stabilization and adaptation. The article also shows how propositions derived from this model have been tested, and discusses possible practical implications of some supporting evidence to the teaching of motor skills. The stabilization refers to a process of functional stabilization that is achieved through negative feedback mechanisms.
