Chronic pain and dysesthesias are debilitating conditions that can arise following spinal cord injury (SCI). Research studies frequently employ rodent models of SCI to better understand the underlying mechanisms and develop better treatments for these phenomena. Background/aims: Fecal lactoferrin is the direct expression of intestinal inflammation in Crohn's disease (CD). Objectives: We developed a genetic investigation using denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC), in order to identify polymorphisms of the gene MVK in patients with autoinflammatory syndrome suspicion.

The act of listening to speech activates a large network of brain areas. In the present work, a novel data-driven technique (the combination of independent component analysis and Granger causality) was used to extract brain network dynamics from an fMRI study of passive listening to Words, Pseudo-Words, and Reverse-played words. Using this method we show the functional connectivity modulations among classical language regions (Broca's and Wernicke's areas) and inferior parietal, somatosensory, and motor areas and right cerebellum.

Vectors combining the heat shock proteins (HSPs) promoter with the catalytic subunit A of the diphtheria toxin (DTA) or its variants, cross-reacting material (CRM) 176 and 197, were engineered to investigate the effect of bacterial toxins on pancreatic cancer (PC) cells. Three heat-inducible enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP)-expression vectors were obtained: V1 (91% homology to HSPA6), V2 (five heat shock elements upstream the minimal HSPA6 promoter) and V3 (V1 and V2 combined). The highest eGFP transcription and translation levels were found in V3 transfected PC cells.

Background: Surface-enhanced laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF/MS), a laboratory-friendly technique, is used to identify biomarkers for cancer. The aim of the present study was to explore the application of SELDI proteomic patterns in serum for distinguishing between cases of pancreatic cancer, chronic pancreatitis, type 2 diabetes mellitus and healthy controls.

Methods: Sera from 12 healthy controls, 24 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 126 with pancreatic cancer, including 84 with diabetes, and 61 with chronic pancreatitis, 32 of which were diabetics, were analyzed using SELDI-TOF/MS.

Loss of menin, a tumor suppressor coded by the MEN1 gene, is a key factor in the pathogenesis of multiple endocrine neoplasia type I and in a percentage of sporadic endocrine tumors of the pancreas and parathyroid glands. This study investigated expression of the menin protein in the normal exocrine pancreas and in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the most common pancreatic tumor. Immunofluorescence (IF) analyses showed that menin is expressed at high levels in normal acinar and duct cells.

It has often been proposed that there is a close link between representation of number and space. In the present work, single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied to the ventral intraparietal sulcus (VIPS) to determine effects on performance in motion detection and number comparison tasks. Participants' reaction times and thresholds for perception of laterally presented coherent motion in random dot kinematograms increased significantly when the contralateral VIPS was stimulated in contrast to the interhemispheric sulcus (Experiment 1) and to the ipsilateral VIPS (Experiment 2).
