The alcoholic fermentation for fuel ethanol production in Brazil occurs in the presence of several microorganisms present with the starter strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in sugarcane musts. It is expected that a multitude of microbial interactions may exist and impact on the fermentation yield. The yeast Dekkera bruxellensis and the bacterium Lactobacillus fermentum are important and frequent contaminants of industrial processes, although reports on the effects of both microorganisms simultaneously in ethanolic fermentation are scarce.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFEven though contamination by bacteria and wild yeasts are frequently observed during fuel ethanol fermentation, our knowledge regarding the effects of both contaminants together is very limited, especially considering that the must composition can vary from exclusively sugarcane juice to a mixture of molasses and juice, affecting the microbial development. Here we studied the effects of the feedstock (sugarcane juice and molasses) and the co-culture of Lactobacillus fermentum and a wild Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain (rough colony and pseudohyphae) in single and multiple-batch fermentation trials with an industrial strain of S. cerevisiae (PE-2) as starter yeast.

Information processing, particularly of salient emotional stimuli, is influenced by cardiovascular afferent signals. Carotid baroreceptors signal the state of cardiovascular arousal to the brain, controlling blood pressure and heart rate via the baroreflex. Animal studies suggest a lateralization of this effect: Experimental stimulation of the right carotid sinus has a greater impact on heart rate when compared to left-sided stimulation.

We examined the trends in umbilical cord care practices between 2012 and 2015 that coincided with the introduction of chlorhexidine digluconate 7.1% gel in Bauchi and Sokoto States.

Several industrial processes generate hyper saline wastewater, which is a significant challenge for conventional wastewater treatment, and the disposal of saline waters also has a negative impact on the environment. Road salt run-off is one such saline wastewater stream not currently treated and one that contributes significantly to negatively impacting receiving bodies of water.

Nicotinic alpha-9 acetylcholine receptor subunit (alpha-9 nAChR) participate in physiological processes occurring in sensory, endocrine and immune systems. There is a relationship between the SWC architecture, body homeostasis and sensory afferents so that disruption of afferent signaling is expected to affect the temporal organization of sleep and wake states.

Objective: To analyze the various anatomical parameters that influence segmental stability in patients suffering from lumbar intra spinal cysts (LISCs) and to determine the outcome of microscopic unilateral laminotomy and cystectomy.
Methods: All patients that were surgically managed for a LISC between 2007 and 2013 with more than 3 years of follow-up were reviewed.

Lutein is a commercial carotenoid with potential health benefits. Microalgae are alternative sources for the lutein production in comparison to conventional approaches using marigold flowers. In this study, a process analysis of a single-step simultaneous extraction, saponification, and primary purification process for free lutein production from wet microalgae biomass was carried out.

Spontaneous collapse models predict that a weak force noise acts on any mechanical system, as a consequence of the collapse of the wave function. Significant upper limits on the collapse rate have been recently inferred from precision mechanical experiments, such as ultracold cantilevers and the space mission LISA Pathfinder. Here, we report new results from an experiment based on a high-Q cantilever cooled to millikelvin temperatures, which is potentially able to improve the current bounds on the continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model by 1 order of magnitude.

In particular, we consider translational and Galilean covariant maps and show that they reduce to the known Holevo result in the Markovian limit. We apply the results to discuss measures of macroscopicity based on classicalization maps, specifically addressing dissipation, Galilean covariance and non-Markovianity.

Background: Corticosteroids are central to inducing remission in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) but are ineffective maintenance agents.
Aim: To benchmark steroid usage in British outpatients and assess factors associated with excess exposure.
Methods: We recorded steroid use in unselected IBD outpatients.
Growth and development of plants is ultimately driven by light energy captured through photosynthesis. ATP acts as universal cellular energy cofactor fuelling all life processes, including gene expression, metabolism, and transport. Despite a mechanistic understanding of ATP biochemistry, ATP dynamics in the living plant have been largely elusive.

In this work, a time-resolved DOT system based on structured light illumination, compressive detection, and multiple view acquisition has been proposed and experimentally validated on a biological tissue-mimicking phantom. The experimental scheme is based on two digital micromirror devices for illumination and detection modulation, in combination with a time-resolved single element detector.

Microalgae may be a potential source for lutein production while the expense limits the commercialization. In this study, a coiled tubular tree photobioreactor (CTPBR) design was investigated for cultivating the cold tolerant microalgae Chlorella vulgaris UTEX 265 under various conditions for lutein production.

Although both NaCO and HCOOH catalysts have been proven to be effective for promoting biomass conversion, the bio-crude oil yield obtained from HTL with NaCO (11.5wt%) was lower than that obtained from the non-catalytic HTL in pure water at 275°C for 50min.

However, little monitoring on the faculties' compliance with this law has been performed either by the government or other institutional bodies. Based on this premise, the authors have critically reviewed the existing data and compared them with those emerging from their own investigation to discuss limitations and inconsistencies.
