Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) are rare but serious conditions characterized by dilation of the aorta characterized by remodeling of the vessel wall, with changes in the elastin and collagen content. Individuals with Marfan syndrome have a genetic predisposition for elastic fiber fragmentation and elastin degradation and are prone to early aneurysm formation and progression. Our objective was to analyze the medial collagen characteristics through histological, polarized light microscopy, and electron microscopy methods across the thoracic and abdominal aorta in twenty-five patients undergoing open surgical repair, including nine with Marfan syndrome.

A combination of the molten core and stack-and-draw fiber fabrication techniques is used to produce a 112 µm core diameter fiber that is a random array of Yb-doped high index and passive low index regions. A localized channel first assists in the guidance of amplified spontaneous emission before stimulating laser action, which occurs in the same channel via mixed Anderson localization and step index wave-guiding.

Tools developed for using SAS data to image hydrodynamic features in the water column were applied to observations of the bubble clouds and fish aggregation. Combining imagery and height data captured by the sonar array with a detection and tracking algorithm enables the trajectories, velocities, and behavior of fish in the aggregation to be observed.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis study sought to evaluate the expression of previously identified microRNAs known to regulate neuronal differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), including miR-27, miR-125, miR-128, miR-135, miR-140, miR-145, miR-218 and miR-410, among dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) under conditions demonstrated to induce neuronal differentiation. Using an approved protocol, = 12 DPSCs were identified from an existing biorepository and treated with basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF), which were previously demonstrated to induce neural differentiation markers including Sox1, Pax6 and NFM among these DPSCs. This study revealed that some microRNAs involved in the neuronal differentiation of MSCs were also differentially expressed among the DPSCs, including miR-27 and miR-145.

An all-solid transverse Anderson localizing optical fiber (TALOF) was fabricated using a novel combination of the stack-and-draw and molten core methods. Strong Anderson localization is observed in multiple regions of the fiber cross section associated with the higher index strontium aluminosilicate phases randomly arranged within a pure silica matrix. Further, to the best of our knowledge, nonlinear four-wave mixing is reported for the first time in a TALOF.

When the characteristic impedance contrast between a target and the surrounding medium is weak, small differences between the true and modeled impedance can cause significant errors in modeled scattering. For crude oil, currently available empirical models of density and sound speed are derived from measurements made at reservoir conditions (high temperature and pressure), which may not be relevant to oceanographic conditions due to phase changes in the oil.
