Purpose: Femur fractures are among the most common fractures treated surgically, representing a significant challenge for the orthopedic surgeon. Peri-implant femoral fractures (PIFFs) represent a rare complication of the surgical treatment. It is necessary to pay attention during osteosynthesis, evaluating not only the fracture site but the entire femoral skeletal structure, the characteristics of the fracture, the health comorbidities, and the risk of malunion and pseudarthrosis.

This absence of a satisfactory summation of virtues has stimulated us to attempt a conceptual framework utilizing a tripartite taxonomy. This taxonomy reflects recent interest in and importance of justice and care of the self.

Cost-effectiveness of neuropsychological rehabilitation for acquired brain injuries: Update of Stolwyk et al.'s (2019) review.

Acquired brain injuries (ABI), resulting from stroke or traumatic brain injury, cause a range of neuropsychological impairments and many patients continue to experience neuropsychological deficits years after onset. The increasing average age of the population highlights the importance of effective management strategies for the consequences of ABI. Despite the well-documented impact of rehabilitation interventions, the cost-effectiveness of neuropsychological rehabilitation remains largely unknown.

Multivessel revascularization in non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndromes: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 182,798 patients.

Background: Patients experiencing non-ST segment elevation acute-coronary-syndromes (NSTE-ACS) often present with multivessel-coronary-artery-disease (MVD). An immediate complete multivessel revascularization (MVR) - within the index hospitalization - may be considered the default therapeutic strategy, although its risk-to-benefit profile has not been definitively established through dedicated clinical trials.

Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis, adhering to MOOSE and PRISMA guidelines, was conducted to assess studies comparing immediate MVR versus a conservative culprit-only revascularization (COR) in NSTE-ACS with MVD.

This commentary provides a comprehensive overview of the pathology, including symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options and long-term management. Patients with primary synovial chondromatosis complaint pain and functional impairment, together with a peculiar joint popping sensation during movement, so determining early disability.

Evaluation of Toll-like Receptor 4 (TLR4) Involvement in Human Atrial Fibrillation: A Computational Study.

In the present study, we have explored the involvement of Toll-like Receptor 4 (TLR4) in atrial fibrillation (AF), by using a meta-analysis of publicly available human transcriptomic data. The meta-analysis revealed 565 upregulated and 267 downregulated differentially expressed genes associated with AF. Pathway enrichment analysis highlighted a significant overrepresentation in immune-related pathways for the upregulated genes.

A modular framework for multi-scale tissue imaging and neuronal segmentation.

The development of robust tools for segmenting cellular and sub-cellular neuronal structures lags behind the massive production of high-resolution 3D images of neurons in brain tissue. The challenges are principally related to high neuronal density and low signal-to-noise characteristics in thick samples, as well as the heterogeneity of data acquired with different imaging methods. To address this issue, we design a framework which includes sample preparation for high resolution imaging and image analysis.

Stearate-Coated Biogenic Calcium Carbonate from Waste Seashells: A Sustainable Plastic Filler.

Waste seashells from aquaculture are a massive source of biogenic calcium carbonate (bCC) that can be a potential substitute for ground calcium carbonate and precipitated calcium carbonate. These last materials find several applications in industry after a surface coating with hydrophobic molecules, with stearate as the most used. Here, we investigate for the first time the capability of aqueous stearate dispersions to coat bCC powders from seashells of market-relevant mollusc aquaculture species, namely the oyster , the scallop , and the clam .

Remote endpoints for clinical trials in cystic fibrosis: Report from the U.S. CF foundation remote endpoints task force.

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rapid shift in clinical research to perform virtual visits and remote endpoint assessments, providing a key opportunity to optimize the use of remote endpoints for clinical trials in cystic fibrosis. The use of remote endpoints could allow more diverse participation in clinical trials while minimizing participant burden but must be robustly evaluated to ensure adequate performance and feasibility. In response, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation convened the Remote Endpoint Task Force (Supplemental Table 1), a multidisciplinary group of CF researchers with remote endpoint expertise and community members tasked to better understand the current and future use of remote endpoints for clinical research.

Artificial intelligence for radiographic imaging detection of caries lesions: a systematic review.

Background: The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models designed for the detection of caries lesion (CL).

Materials And Methods: An electronic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, LILACS and Embase databases for retrospective, prospective and cross-sectional studies published until January 2023, using the following keywords: artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), artificial neural networks (ANN), convolutional neural networks (CNN), deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN), radiology, detection, diagnosis and dental caries (DC). The quality assessment was performed using the guidelines of QUADAS-2.

A New Approach for Bioremediation of Olive Mill Wastewaters: Combination of Straw Filtration and Nanofiltration.

A combination of straw filtration and nanofiltration was investigated for the first time as a sustainable approach aimed at valorizing olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) within a circular economy strategy. Ground straw filters with different granulometry (120, 250 and 500 μm) were tested in the first step to clarify the raw wastewater. The 500 μm filter offered the best performance due to a lower exposed surface of the filtering fibers and a shorter filtering time, allowing us to reduce about 70% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the raw wastewater.

Radial head prosthesis disassembly: case report and medico-legal implications.

Background: The aim of the treatment of radial head comminuted fractures is the restoration of anatomical normalcy to avoid the risk of several complications such as joint instability. Among the options for the treatment of such fractures, it is worth mentioning osteosynthesis, resection of the radial head or prosthetic replacement. In the presence of comminution or severe dislocation of the fracture's fragments, as in our patient's type III Mason fracture, prosthesis implantation is the treatment of choice.

A pharmacoeconomic analysis from Italian guidelines for the management of prolactinomas.

Background: Prolactinoma, the most common pituitary adenoma, is usually treated with dopamine agonist (DA) therapy like cabergoline. Surgery is second-line therapy, and radiotherapy is used if surgical treatment fails or in relapsing macroprolactinoma.

Objective: This study aimed to provide economic evidence for the management of prolactinoma in Italy, using a cost-of-illness and cost-utility analysis that considered various treatment options, including cabergoline, bromocriptine, temozolomide, radiation therapy, and surgical strategies.
