Histopathological spectrum of lumbar disc changes in obesity: analysis of intervertebral discs in lumbar hernia patients in Zenica-Doboj Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Aim To investigate the correlation of body mass index (BMI) with severity of intervertebral disc degeneration. Methods The study enrolled patients who had undergone surgical intervention for a herniated disc at the Department of Neurosurgery of the Cantonal Hospital Zenica. Patients underwent thorough preoperative evaluation, including medical history, neurological and physical assessments, and radiological analysis.

Application of UV-activated persulfate and peroxymonosulfate processes for the degradation of 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene in different water matrices.

The presence of a large number of micropollutants in the environment, including priority and emerging substances, poses a significant risk to surface and groundwater quality. Among them, trichlorobenzenes are widely used in the syntheses of dyes, pesticides, solvents, and other chemicals and have been identified as priority pollutants by the European Water Framework Directive. The main goal of this study was to investigate the behavior of 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene (TCB) during the sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) involving UV activation of persulfate or peroxymonosulfate (UV/SO and UV/HSO processes).

Homo- and heteronuclear meso,meso-(E)-ethene-1,2-diyl-linked diporphyrins: preparation, x-ray crystal structure, electronic absorption and emission spectra and density functional theory calculations.

Homo- and heteronuclear meso,meso-(E)-ethene-1,2-diyl-linked diporphyrins have been prepared by the Suzuki coupling of porphyrinylboronates and iodovinylporphyrins. Combinations comprising 5,10,15-triphenylporphyrin (TriPP) on both ends of the ethene-1,2-diyl bridge M(2)10 (M(2) =H(2)/Ni, Ni(2), Ni/Zn, H(4), H(2)Zn, Zn(2)) and 5,15-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrinato-nickel(II) on one end and H(2), Ni, and ZnTriPP on the other (M(2)11), enable the first studies of this class of compounds possessing intrinsic polarity. The compounds were characterized by electronic absorption and steady state emission spectra, (1)H NMR spectra, and for the Ni(2) bis(TriPP) complex Ni(2)10, single crystal X-ray structure determination.

Occupational and patient exposure in interventional cardiology in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Monitoring of professionally exposed workers in Bosnia and Herzegovina started in 1960s. Doses received by patients and professionals in interventional cardiology are high in comparison with other practices in medicine. The purpose of this study is to present personal and patient dosimetry data.

The highest doses are received by professionals working in interventional procedures (radiology, cardiology, gastroenterohepatology etc.

Patient doses in interventional cardiology in Bosnia and Herzegovina: first results.

Cardiologists at the Cardiac Centre of the Clinical Centre of Sarajevo University performed invasive cardiology procedures in one room equipped with a Siemens Coroskop (Siemens Healthcare, Erlangen, Germany) unit with the possibility of digital cine imaging. The number of procedures performed with this unit is 1126 per year. The number of adults performing only diagnostic procedures is 816, therapeutic procedures 62 and both diagnostic and therapeutic 228.

Ten years of monitoring the occupational radiation exposure in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Monitoring of occupationally exposed persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina started in 1960s and it was interrupted in 1992. Dosimetry service resumed in 1999 when the International Atomic Energy Agency provided Harshaw 4500 TLD-reader and the first set of TLDs for the Radiation Protection Centre (RPC) of the Institute of Public Health of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In January 2009, the RPC covered 1279 professionals with personal dosimetry, which is more than 70 % of all radiation workers in the country.

Harmonization of individual dosimetry quality control within metrology system of a small country.

A programme of harmonization of individual dosimetry quality control organized in the framework of a distributed metrology system is presented as seen from the experiences gained in Slovenia. As a part of the programme intercomparison of dosimetry services was organized and basic characteristics of dosimetry systems compared. Results are discussed with suggestions for further improvements of quality assurance.

Problems of operative and non-operative treatment and healing in tibial fractures.

Based on the experience of the department of pediatric surgery at the Strasbourg University Hospital, the authors present indications and limitations of various treatment techniques for tibial shaft fractures in children. Two retrospective series are reported on: one group of patients treated with the Sarmiento technique and one group of patients treated with Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing (ESIN or Métaizeau technique). The main problem in treatment is restoration of the mechanical axis of the tibia, especially in isolated fractures treated conservatively.
