Somatosensory coding in rodents has been mostly studied in the whisker system and hairy skin, whereas the function of low-threshold mechanoreceptors (LTMRs) in the rodent glabrous skin has received scant attention, unlike in primates where the glabrous skin has been the focus. The relative activation of different LTMR subtypes carries information about vibrotactile stimuli, as does the rate and temporal patterning of LTMR spikes. Rate coding depends on the probability of a spike occurring on each stimulus cycle (reliability), whereas temporal coding depends on the timing of spikes relative to the stimulus cycle (precision).

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in March 2020, led to the development of various testing methods and antiviral medications to combat the disease and its severe impacts on global health.
  • A study conducted on 556 oncology patients at Augusta Victoria Hospital aimed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of the Panbio rapid antigen test, finding a sensitivity of 69.9% and a perfect specificity of 100%.
  • Results showed that lower cycle threshold (Ct) values were linked to higher detection rates of the virus, with significant statistical evidence indicating that the PCR test is more sensitive than the rapid antigen test.

Reduction of fossil fuel usage, clean energy supply, and dependability are all major benefits of integrating distributed energy resources (DER) with electrical utility grid (UG). Nevertheless, there are difficulties with this integration, most notably accidental islanding that puts worker and equipment safety at risk. Islanding detection methods (IDMs) play a critical role in resolving this problem.

Rupture or dissection of thoracic aortic aneurysms is still the leading cause of death for patients diagnosed with Marfan syndrome. Inflammation and matrix digestion regulated by matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) play a major role in the pathological remodeling of the aortic media. Regnase-1 is an endoribonuclease shown to cleave the mRNA of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6.

Electrically activating mechanoreceptive afferents inhibits pain. However, paresthesia evoked by spinal cord stimulation (SCS) at 40-60 Hz becomes uncomfortable at high pulse amplitudes, limiting SCS "dosage." Kilohertz-frequency SCS produces analgesia without paresthesia and is thought, therefore, not to activate afferent axons.

Background And Purpose: Automatic review of breast plan quality for clinical trials is time-consuming and has some unique challenges due to the lack of target contours for some planning techniques. We propose using an auto-contouring model and statistical process control to independently assess planning consistency in retrospective data from a breast radiotherapy clinical trial.

Materials And Methods: A deep learning auto-contouring model was created and tested quantitatively and qualitatively on 104 post-lumpectomy patients' computed tomography images (nnUNet; train/test: 80/20).

The Middle East region experiences a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, yet most genetic studies on vitamin D have focused on European populations. Furthermore, there is a lack of research on the genomic risk factors affecting elderly people, who are more susceptible to health burdens. We investigated the genetic determinants of 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations in elderly Lebanese individuals ( = 199) through a whole-exome-based genome-wide association study.

Multiple cognitive operations are associated with the emergence of gamma oscillations in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) although little is known about the mechanisms that control this rhythm. Using local field potential recordings from cats, we show that periodic bursts of gamma recur with 1 Hz regularity in the wake mPFC and are locked to the exhalation phase of the respiratory cycle. Respiration organizes long-range coherence in the gamma band between the mPFC and the nucleus reuniens the thalamus (Reu), linking the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus.

Introduction: Beta oscillations in sensorimotor structures contribute to the planning, sequencing, and stopping of movements, functions that are typically associated with the role of the basal ganglia. The presence of beta oscillations (13-30 Hz) in the cerebellar zone of the thalamus (the ventral intermediate nucleus - Vim) indicates that this rhythm may also be involved in cerebellar functions such as motor learning and visuomotor adaptation.

Methods: To investigate the possible role of Vim beta oscillations in visuomotor coordination, we recorded local field potential (LFP) and multiunit activity from the Vim of essential tremor (ET) patients during neurosurgery for the implantation of deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes.

Purpose: Variability in contouring contributes to large variations in radiation therapy planning and treatment outcomes. The development and testing of tools to automatically detect contouring errors require a source of contours that includes well-understood and realistic errors. The purpose of this work was to develop a simulation algorithm that intentionally injects errors of varying magnitudes into clinically accepted contours and produces realistic contours with different levels of variability.

Background: COVID-19 emerged as a global pandemic in 2020, spreading rapidly to most parts of the world. The proportion of infected individuals in a population can be reliably estimated via serosurveillance, making it a valuable tool for planning control measures. Our serosurvey study aimed to investigate SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in the urban population of Hyderabad at the end of the first wave of infections.

Binge eating disorder (BED), characterized by bingeing episodes and compulsivity, is the most prevalent eating disorder; however, little is known about its neurobiological underpinnings. In humans, BED is associated with desensitization of the reward system, specifically, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), nucleus accumbens (Acb), and ventral tegmental area (VTA). Additionally, BED patients feel relieved during bingeing, suggesting that bingeing helps to decrease the negative emotions they were feeling prior to the binge episode.

Gene therapeutic approaches to aortic diseases require efficient vectors and delivery systems for transduction of endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs). Here, we developed a novel strategy to efficiently deliver a previously described vascular-specific adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector to the abdominal aorta by application of alginate hydrogels. To efficiently transduce ECs and SMCs, we used AAV9 vectors with a modified capsid (AAV9SLR) encoding enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), as wild-type AAV vectors do not transduce ECs and SMCs well.

Although vessels are directly exposed to the bloodstream, vascular gene transfer is rarely used as a tool for preclinical studies for several reasons: (i) viral and non-viral vectors show a low transduction efficiency in the vascular system; (ii) classical vascular gene therapy approaches such as treatment of peripheral or cardiac ischemia are focusing on non-vascular target cells; and (iii) vascular diseases are rarely monogenetic, thus gene replacement approaches are uncommon. Here, we provide an overview of recent approaches in developing novel vectors and modes of application for improved transduction efficiency of large and small vessels. Increased availability of such tools for vascular gene transfer has already facilitated preclinical studies addressing a broad variety of vascular diseases like transplant vasculopathy, atherosclerosis, and hereditary aortic diseases such as Marfan syndrome.

Primary afferent neurons convey somatosensory information to the CNS. Low-threshold mechanoreceptors are classified as slow-adapting (SA) or rapid-adapting (RA) based on whether or not they spike repetitively during sustained tactile stimulation; the former are subclassified as Type 1 or 2 based on the regularity of their spiking. Recording from DRGs of mice, we observed irregular- and regular-spiking units consistent with SA1 and SA2 low-threshold mechanoreceptors, but some units, which we labeled "semiregular," did not fit cleanly into the existing classification scheme.

Neuromuscular disorders are often caused by heterogeneous mutations in large, structurally complex genes. Targeting compensatory modifier genes could be beneficial to improve disease phenotypes. Here we report a mutation-independent strategy to upregulate the expression of a disease-modifying gene associated with congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A (MDC1A) using the CRISPR activation system in mice.

The dosimetric dependence of ocular structures on eye size and shape was investigated within the standard ICRP Publication 116 irradiation geometries. A realistic transport geometry was constructed by inserting a scalable and deformable stylised eye model developed in our previous study within the head of the ICRP Publication 110 adult male reference computational phantom. Beam irradiations of external electrons, photons, and neutrons on this phantom were simulated using the Monte Carlo radiation transport code PHITS in the geometries of AP, RLAT, PA and ROT.

Multiplexing refers to the simultaneous encoding of two or more signals. Neurons have been shown to multiplex, but different stimuli require different multiplexing strategies. Whereas the frequency and amplitude of periodic stimuli can be encoded by the timing and rate of the same spikes, natural scenes, which comprise areas over which intensity varies gradually and sparse edges where intensity changes abruptly, require a different multiplexing strategy.

With recent changes in the recommended annual limit on eye lens exposures to ionizing radiation, there is considerable interest in predictive computational dosimetry models of the human eye and its various ocular structures including the crystalline lens, ciliary body, cornea, retina, optic nerve, and central retinal artery. Computational eye models to date have been constructed as stylized models, high-resolution voxel models, and polygon mesh models. Their common feature, however, is that they are typically constructed of nominal size and of a roughly spherical shape associated with the emmetropic eye.

Background: Deep brain stimulation of the ventro-intermedius nucleus of the thalamus is an established treatment for tremor of differing etiologies but factors that may predict the short- and especially long-term outcome of surgery are still largely unknown.

Methods: We retrospectively investigated the clinical, pharmacological, electrophysiological and anatomical features that might predict the initial response and preservation of benefit in all patients who underwent deep brain stimulation for tremor. Data were collected at the following time points: baseline (preoperative), one-year post-surgery, and most recent visit.

The amputation of an extremity is commonly followed by phantom sensations that are perceived to originate from the missing limb. The mechanism underlying the generation of these sensations is still not clear although the development of abnormal oscillatory bursting in thalamic neurons may be involved. The theory of thalamocortical dysrhythmia implicates gamma oscillations in phantom pathophysiology although this rhythm has not been previously observed in the phantom limb thalamus.

Microstructural investigation of extremely strained samples, such as severely plastically deformed (SPD) materials, by using conventional transmission electron microscopy techniques is very challenging due to strong image contrast resulting from the high defect density. In this study, low angle annular dark field (LAADF) imaging mode of scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) has been applied to study the microstructure of a Mg-3Zn-0.5Y (at%) alloy processed by high pressure torsion (HPT).

OBJECTIVE The ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus is not visible on structural MRI. Therefore, direct VIM targeting methods for stereotactic tremor surgery are desirable. The authors previously described a direct targeting method for visualizing the VIM and its structural connectivity using deterministic tractography.
