Clinical course and outcomes of critically ill patients with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus infection.

Background: Since September 2012, 170 confirmed infections with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been reported to the World Health Organization, including 72 deaths. Data on critically ill patients with MERS-CoV infection are limited.

Objective: To describe the critical illness associated with MERS-CoV.

Cardiorespiratory crisis at the end of pregnancy: a case of pheochromocytoma.

Pheochromocytoma during pregnancy is extremely rare. Its clinical manifestation includes hypertension with various clinical presentations, possibly resembling those of pregnancy-induced hypertension. The real challenge for clinicians is differentiating pheochromocytoma from other causes of hypertension (preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, and pre-existing or essential hypertension), from other cause of pulmonary edema (preeclampsia, peripartum cardiomyopathy, stress or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, pre-existing cardiac disease [mitral stenosis], and high doses betamimetics), and from other causes of cardiovascular collapse (pulmonary embolism, and amniotic fluid embolism).

Peripherally inserted central venous catheters in the acute care setting: A safe alternative to high-risk short-term central venous catheters.

Background: Peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICCs) serve as an alternative to short-term central venous catheters (CVCs) for providing intravenous (IV) access in the hospital. It is not clear which device has a lower risk of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI). We compared CVC- and PICC-related CLABSI rates in the setting of an intervention to remove high-risk CVCs.

Staphylococcus aureus skin/soft-tissue infections: the impact of SCCmec type and Panton-Valentine leukocidin.

We assessed the role of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) and SCCmec type in community associated (CA) and healthcare associated (HC) Staphylococcus aureus (SA) skin/soft-tissue infections (STI). We prospectively monitored microbiology results (11 January 2005 to 6 January 2006), screened inpatients with SA in tissue samples or blood, and selected adults with STI. We recorded clinical/microbiological characteristics, and tested saved isolates for PVL genes (real time PCR) and SCCmec type (conventional multiplex PCR).
