Objective: This research aims to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes of both dynamic rod system (PLSDR) and rigid rod system (PLSRR) when treating lumbar degenerative disease (LDD).

Method: A retrospective review of 98 patients who underwent posterior stabilization surgery with a posterior approach in our clinic between 2018 and 2023 was conducted. The patients were divided into two groups based on the type of implant used: Those with PLSRR (Group 1) and those with PLSDR (Group 2).

Background: Speech changes significantly impact the quality of life for Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) is a standard treatment for advanced PD, but its effects on speech remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between STN-DBS and speech changes in PD patients using comprehensive clinical assessments and tractography.

Article Synopsis
  • Multivalent lectin-glycan interactions (MLGIs) play a key role in viral infections and immune response, making understanding their structure essential for developing new therapies.
  • Researchers have created glycosylated nanoparticles, specifically gold nanoparticles (GNPs), to study MLGIs and have established a method to assess their binding affinities and structural characteristics.
  • Findings indicate that larger GNPs enhance MLGI affinity and antiviral effectiveness, particularly a 27 nm GNP that significantly inhibits viral connections to the DC-SIGN receptors.

The dendritic cell tetrameric lectin, DC-SIGN, and its closely related endothelial cell lectin, DC-SIGNR (collectively abbreviated as DC-SIGN/R) play a key role in the binding and transmission of deadly viruses, including Ebola, HIV, HCV, and SARS-CoV-2. Their virus binding/release processes involve a gradually acidifying environment following the natural intracellular trafficking pathways. Therefore, understanding DC-SIGN/R's pH-dependent binding properties with glycan ligands is of great importance.

Background: Postoperative pain following posterior fixation is caused not only by tissue injury during surgery and is related to inflammatory, neuropathic, and visceral pain. This study aims to answer the question, "Is there a role for gabapentinoids in reducing postoperative pain?" In addition, it demonstrates which gabapentinoids may be used, for how long, and at what dose.

Methods: The study was planned as a prospective, randomized, double-blind study.

: Chiari malformations (CMs) are a heterogeneous group of disorders defined by anatomic anomalies of the cerebellum, brainstem, and craniovertebral junction (CVJ). The aims of this study are to establish the demographic and clinical features, incidence, surgical procedures, and outcomes in large series of old and new subtypes of CMs.: All patients were evaluated and operated on for CM-0, 1, and 1.

Several 5-(alkylsulfonyl)-1-substituted-2-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole derivatives were synthesized and their antioxidant activities were investigated using lipid peroxidation (LPO) and 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) assays. Docking analysis with Human NAD[P]H-Quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) was also performed to gather thorough information about these compounds that have antioxidant activities. Moreover, their molecular descriptors and ADME properties were calculated using the SwissADME online program.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels may increase in diabetic state and lead to oxidative stress, which plays a critical role in the progression of diabetes. There are various sources of ROS, including cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYP450s), which may be modulated in terms of their activities and expressions under diabetic conditions. This study is aimed to investigate the effects of streptozotocin-induced diabetes and insulin treatment on hepatic cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) and cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) activities and LPO levels.

Objectives: The antioxidant properties of some 2-(2-phenyl)-1-benzo(d)imidazol-1-yl)-N'-(arylmethylene) acetohydrazide derivatives (1-12) were investigated in this study.

Materials And Methods: The antioxidant activity of compounds 1-12 was explored by determination of rat liver microsomal nicotinamideadenine dinucleotide phosphate dependent inhibition on lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels and microsomal ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity.

Results: All synthesised compounds had LPO inhibitory activity (15-57%) except compound 6, which contains a thiophene ring.

Introduction: The pituitary gland serves as the center of the endocrine system. Stem cells are typically found in a specialized microenvironment of the tissue, called the niche, which regulates their maintenance, self-renewal, fate determination, and reaction to external influences. The aim of this study is to elucidate the role of stem cells in the initiation, invasion, and progression of pituitary adenomas.

Tobacco smoke from regular cigarettes contains a number of harmful chemicals such as nicotine, arsenic, benzene, carbon monoxide, heavy metals, and tobacco-derived nitrosamines. About 1% of over 7000 chemical substances formed by burning tobacco are identified as the leading causes or possible risk factors of smoking-related diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and emphysema. The concept of heating tobacco without combustion and smoke has been designed for more than two decades.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health problem worldwide that is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) is one of the sequelae of TBI. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an adjuvant on the efficacy of levetiracetam (LEV) and gabapentin (GBP) in PTE model encouraged by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) after mild-TBI in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

Objective: The thoracolumbar (TL) area marks the transition of the rigid thoracic spine into the mobile lumbar spine, and it is considered to be the weakest part of the spine. This study was designed to develop a finite element (FE) model of the TL junction (T9-L3) to provide data that could help the clinician and researcher to answer the question of whether short-segment posterior fixation is sufficient for biomechanical performance. In addition, the aim was to examine whether long-segment posterior fixation carries a greater risk of the development of adjacent segment disease.

In this study, we aimed to investigate morphometry of posterior fossa and CVJ in subtypes of CM and in control group, and to bring up a matter a correlation with demographic data and subtypes of CM.

Patients And Methods: The study group included patients managed for CM between 2012 and 2016 and control group.

Background: Recently, neuromodulation through deep brain stimulation (DBS) has appeared as a new surgical procedure in the treatment of some types of dementia and epilepsy. The mammillothalamic and mammillotegmental tracts are involved among the new targets. To our knowledge, a review article focused specifically on these mammillary body efferents is lacking in the medical literature.

Introduction: Pituitary adenomas (PA) are the third most common intracranial tumors, with an incidence rate of 10-15%. More than half are invasive, infiltrating adjacent structures. The primary objective of this project was to determine whether MGMT expression is associated with the invasiveness of PA.

This review summarizes recent information concerning the pharmacological and toxicological significance of the flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs). FMOs are a family of microsomal enzymes involving in the oxygenation of certain xenobiotics and drugs containing nucleophilic heteroatoms. The activities of FMOs in drug metabolism and their relationships with diseases are the areas of research requiring further exploration.

Degeneration of IVD is a progressive and irreversible process and can be evaluated with immunohistochemical examination or radiological grading. MMPs are a family of proteolytic enzymes and involved in the degradation of the matrix components of the IVD. We aimed to compare MMP-1, -2, -3, and -9 expressions with demographic features, visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and radiological (MRI) grades.
