We report the synthesis of bimetallic plasmonic nanostructure of silver shelled gold nanorods (Ag-Au NRs), subsequently employed for the selective detection of cholesterol (Cho) and triglycerides (TGl) utilizing Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). In this direction, the gold nanorods (Au NRs) were synthesized via seed mediated growth method followed by forming a silver shell with reduction of AgNO onto Au NRs. Ag-Au NRs showed significantly augmented SERS property owing to hybridization of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances (LSPR) of silver and gold.

Cardiotoxicity remains a major limitation in the clinical utility of anthracycline chemotherapeutics. Regulator of G-protein Signaling 7 (RGS7) and inflammatory markers are up-regulated in the hearts of patients with a history of chemotherapy particularly those with reduced left-ventricular function. RGS7 knockdown in either the murine myocardium or isolated murine ventricular cardiac myocytes (VCM) or cultured human VCM provided marked protection against doxorubicin-dependent oxidative stress, NF-κB activation, inflammatory cytokine production, and cell death.

Off target damage to vital organ systems is an unfortunate side effect of cancer chemotherapy and remains a major limitation to the use of these essential drugs in the clinic. Despite decades of research, the mechanisms conferring susceptibility to chemotherapy driven cardiotoxicity and hepatotoxicity remain unclear. In the livers of patients with a history of chemotherapy, we observed a twofold increase in expression of G protein regulator RGS7 and a corresponding decrease in fellow R7 family member RGS11.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the use of exosomes derived from human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells (hUCBMSCs) as nanocarriers for co-delivering the tumor suppressor miR-125a and the chemotherapy drug Docetaxel (DTX) to combat aggressive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells.
  • Researchers successfully loaded DTX into both non-transfected and miR-125a transfected exosomes, and compared their anticancer effectiveness using various assays, revealing enhanced anti-metastatic properties of the co-loaded formulation.
  • Key findings demonstrated that miR-125a Exo-DTX required a lower concentration to be effective compared to free DTX, significantly improved wound healing

Nonuniform proton flux around a reactive Janus particle as a result of zone selective heterogeneous surface reaction leads to the formation of asymmetric electrical double layers (EDLs) which assists in generating a proximate electric field dipole around the Janus particle to initiate autoelectrophoretic migration. To estimate the force of the autoelectrophoretic motion of such Janus particles, a mathematical model is set up taking Poisson-Nernst-Plank (PNP) equations coupled with the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations with appropriate boundary conditions. To track the actual motion of these particles, we employ moving deforming mesh and fluid-structure interactions (fsi) of COMSOL Multiphysics while a finite element method is deployed for solving the set of modeled equations.

"Cancer" is a dreadful immune-pathological condition that is characterized by anti-inflammatory and tumorigenic responses, elicited by the infiltrating immune cells in the vicinity of an uncontrollably proliferative tumor in the tumor microenvironment (TME). The TME offers a conducive microenvironment that supports cancer cell survival by modulating the host immune defense. Recent advancement in exosomal research has shown exosomes, originating from immune cells as well as the cancer cells, have immense potential for suppressing cancer progression and survival in the TME.

Dose limiting cardiotoxicity remains a major limiting factor in the clinical use of several cancer chemotherapeutics including anthracyclines and the antimetabolite 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Prior work has demonstrated that chemotherapeutics increase expression of R7 family regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) protein-binding partner Gβ, which drives myocyte cytotoxicity. However, though several R7 family members are expressed in heart, the exact role of each protein in chemotherapy driven heart damage remains unclear.
