Methods: We performed a literature search and analyzed the following data: baseline characteristics, efficacy measures (corrections of the main thoracic curve, proximal thoracic curve, and thoracolumbar curve, thoracic kyphosis, lumbosacral lordosis, rib hump, lumbar prominence and SRS-22 scores, and complications. Time reversal (TR) focusing used for nonlinear detection of cracks relies on the ability of the TR process to provide spatially localized, high-amplitude excitation. The high amplitude improves the ability to detect nonlinear features that are a signature of the motion of closed cracks. It follows that a higher peak focal amplitude than what can be generated with the traditional TR process will improve the detection capability.

The Time Reversed Elastic Nonlinearity Diagnostic (TREND) has a long history of successful nondestructive detection of cracks in solids using nonlinear indicators. Recent research implemented TREND to find stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in the heat-affected zone adjacent to welds in stainless steel. In this paper, the multimodal nonlinear elastic behavior of concrete, which is representative of a consolidated granular material, is modeled numerically. Starting from a local three-dimensional softening law, the initial stiffness properties are re-estimated according to the local strain field. Case Presentation: The authors analyzed the cases of three patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis who presented with delayed neurological symptoms (later than 12 months postoperatively) following spinal deformity surgery using Texas Scottish Rite Hospital (TSRH) hook-rod instrumentation. One case presented with conus medullaris syndrome while the last two were rare cases of posterior cord syndrome due to a dislodged laminar hook at the thoracolumbar transition.

The use of nonlinear acoustic techniques in solids consists in measuring wave distortion arising from compliant features such as cracks, soft intergrain bonds and dislocations. Evidence of the ability to probe depth information of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) are presented using the time reversed elastic nonlinearity diagnostic (TREND). Depth estimation of SCC is important to determine when a stainless steel canister has been breached. TREND is a method to focus elastic energy to a point in space in order to probe that point for damage and its' depth penetration is used here to study depth information about SCC.

In this letter, the equivalence between local and global measures of nonclassical nonlinear elasticity is established in a slender resonant bar. Nonlinear effects are first measured globally using nonlinear resonance ultrasound spectroscopy (NRUS), which monitors the relative shift of the resonance frequency as a function of the maximum dynamic strain in the sample. Subsequently, nonlinear effects are measured locally at various positions along the sample using dynamic acousto elasticity testing (DAET).

This letter presents a series of vibrational communication experiments, using time reversal, conducted on a set of cast iron pipes. Time reversal has been used to provide robust, private, and clean communications in many underwater acoustic applications. Here the use of time reversal to communicate along sections of pipes and through a wall is demonstrated to overcome the complications of dispersion and multiple scattering.

This paper presents experimental results demonstrating the increase in ultrasonic radiation obtained from a wedge of cubic profile relative to a plate of uniform thickness. The wedge of cubic profile provides high efficiency sound radiation matching layer from a mounted piezoelectric transducer into the surrounding air. Previous research on structures with indentations of power-law profile has focused on vibration mitigation using the so called "acoustic black-hole" effect, whereas here such structures are used to enhance ultrasonic radiation.

This paper studies the impact of secure watermark embedding in digital images by proposing a practical implementation of secure spread-spectrum watermarking using distortion optimization. Because strong security properties (key-security and subspace-security) can be achieved using natural watermarking (NW) since this particular embedding lets the distribution of the host and watermarked signals unchanged, we use elements of transportation theory to minimize the global distortion. Next, we apply this new modulation, called transportation NW (TNW), to design a secure watermarking scheme for grayscale images.

An air-coupled ultrasonic transducer is created by bonding a bulk piezoelectric element onto the surface of a thick plate with a wedge of power-law profile. The wedge is used to improve the ultrasonic radiation efficiency. The power-law profile provides a smooth, impedance-matching transition for the mechanical energy to be transferred from the thick plate to the air, through the large-amplitude flexural waves observed in the thinnest region of the wedge.

This paper describes the principle behind a high amplitude non-contact acoustic source based on the principle of time reversal (TR), a process to focus energy at a point in space. By doing the TR in an air filled, hollow cavity and using a laser vibrometer in the calibration of the system, a non-contact source may be created. This source is proven to be more energetic than an off the shelf focused ultrasound transducer.
