Hypertension causes cardiac hypertrophy, one of the most important risk factors for heart failure (HF). Despite the importance of cardiac hypertrophy as a risk factor for the development of HF, not all hypertrophied hearts will ultimately fail. Alterations of cytoskeletal and sarcolemma-associated proteins are considered markers cardiac remodeling during HF.

Despite affecting millions of people worldwide, Chagas disease is still neglected by the academia and industry and the therapeutic option available, benznidazole, presents limited efficacy and side effects. Within this context, ursolic acid may serve as an option for treatment, however has low bioavailability, which can be enhanced through the encapsulation in polymeric nanoparticles. Therefore, herein we developed ursolic acid-loaded nanoparticles with poly-ε-caprolactone by the nanoprecipitation method and characterized them for particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity, encapsulation efficiency, morphology by scanning electron microscopy and thermal behavior by differential scanning calorimetry.

Psychological inflexibility refers to the attempt to decrease internal distress even when doing so is inconsistent with life values, and has been identified as a potential barrier to making and maintaining health behavior changes that are consistent with a heart-healthy lifestyle. Disease- and behavior-specific measures of psychological inflexibility have been developed and utilized in treatment research. However, no specific measure has been created for patients with heart disease.

Cellular turnover represents a fundamental aspect of immunological homeostasis. While many factors appear to regulate leukocyte removal during inflammatory resolution, recent studies suggest that members of the galectin family play a unique role in orchestrating this process. Unlike cellular removal through apoptotic cell death, several members of the galectin family induce surface expression of phosphatidylserine (PS), a phagocytic marker on cells undergoing apoptosis, in the absence of cell death.

Glycan binding proteins (GBPs) possess the unique ability to regulate a wide variety of biological processes through interactions with highly modifiable cell surface glycans. While many studies demonstrate the impact of glycan modification on GBP recognition and activity, the relative contribution of subtle changes in glycan structure on GBP binding can be difficult to define. To overcome limitations in the analysis of GBP-glycan interactions, recent studies utilized glycan microarray platforms containing hundreds of structurally defined glycans.

Galectins are an evolutionarily ancient family of glycan-binding proteins (GBPs) and are found in all animals. Although they were discovered over 30 years ago, ideas about their biological functions continue to evolve. Current evidence indicates that galectins, which are the only known GBPs that occur free in the cytoplasm and extracellularly, are involved in a variety of intracellular and extracellular pathways contributing to homeostasis, cellular turnover, cell adhesion, and immunity.

This study describes the synthesis of glycopeptides NHAc[βGal]-(Thr)2 -[αGalNAc]-(Thr)2 -[αGlcNAc]-(Thr)2 Gly-OVA (1-OVA) and NHAc[βGal-αGalNAc]-(Thr)3 -[αLacNAc]-(Thr)3 -Gly-OVA (2-OVA) as mimetics of both T. cruzi and tumor mucin glycoproteins. These glycopeptides were obtained by solid-phase synthesis, which involved the prior preparation of the protected glycosyl amino acids αGlcNAc-ThrOH (3), αGalNAc-ThrOH (4), βGal-ThrOH (5), αLacNAc-ThrOH (6), and βGal-αGalNAc-ThrOH (7) through glycosylation reactions.

Leukotriene B(4) (LTB(4)) is a potent inflammatory mediator and stimulates the immune response. In addition, LTB(4) promotes leukocyte functions such as phagocytosis, chemotaxis and chemokinesis of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, as well as modulates cytokine release. However, some physicochemical characteristics of leukotrienes, such as poor solubility in water and chemical instability, make them difficult to administer in vivo.
