Behavioral experiments are usually designed to tap into a specific cognitive function, but animals may solve a given task through a variety of different and individual behavioral strategies, some of them not foreseen by the experimenter. Animal learning may therefore be seen more as the process of selecting among, and adapting, potential behavioral policies, rather than mere strengthening of associative links. Aims: Sedation, as it is often required in critical care, is associated with immobilization, prolonged ventilation, and increased morbidity. Most sedation protocols are based on benzodiazepines. The presented study analyzes the benefit of benzodiazepine-free sedation.

We respond to the paper of Kruse-Plass et al. (Environ Sci Eur 29:12, 2017), published in this journal, regarding the risk to non-target lepidopteran larvae exposed to pollen from one or more of three Bt maize events (MON810, Bt11 and 1507). We emphasise that what is important for environmental risk assessment is not the number of pollen grains per se, but the degree of exposure of a NT lepidopteran larva to Bt protein contained in maize pollen.

[Alternative approaches in thyroid surgery].

In thyroid surgery multiple different cervical minimally invasive (partly endoscopically assisted) and extracervical endoscopic (partly robot-assisted) approaches have been developed in the last 20 years. The aim of all these alternative approaches to the thyroid gland is optimization of the cosmetic result. The indications for the use of alternative and conventional approaches are principally the same.

The Indications for Laparoscopic Pancreatectomy.

Background: Laparoscopic pancreatectomy is not yet established as a routine procedure everywhere in Germany or in other countries. Few data are available on its short- and long-term outcomes.

Methods: From 2008 onward, a working group initiated by 10 centers and currently comprising 34 centers has gathered data on all cases of laparoscopic pancreatectomy.

Effect of high laser output on the central bronchi and pulmonary artery.

A diode-pump Nd:YAG high-power laser (wavelength 1320 nm, power 100 W) is routinely used to surgically remove lung metastases. Even pulmonary lesions in central locations are resectable via this method, yet it also carries a potential risk of damaging the larger bronchi and vessels in the vicinity. Studies investigating the safety of using high-power lasers are lacking.

The research domain criteria (RDoC) matrix has been developed to reorient psychiatric research towards measurable behavioral dimensions and underlying mechanisms. Here, we used a new genetic rat model with a loss-of-function point mutation in the dopamine transporter (DAT) gene (_N157K) to systematically study the RDoC matrix. VISUALIZATION OF MACULAR PUCKER BY MULTICOLOR SCANNING LASER IMAGING.

Purpose: To compare the visualization of the epiretinal membrane (ERM) using multicolor imaging (MCI) (Heidelberg Engineering, Carlsbad, CA) and conventional white light flood color fundus photography (FP) (Topcon).

Methods: The paired images of patients with ERM who underwent same-day MCI and FP examinations were reviewed. Visibility of the ERM was graded using a scale (0: not visible, 1: barely visible, and 2: clearly visible) by masked readers, and surface folds were counted to quantify the membrane visibility for each method.

Limited Value of Ga-68-DOTATOC-PET-CT in Routine Screening of Patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1.

Background: Routine screening is recommended for patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) to enable early detection and treatment of associated neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN). Gallium-DOTATOC-Positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (Ga-68-DOTATOC-PET-CT) is a very sensitive and specific imaging technique for the detection of sporadic neuroendocrine tumors. The present study evaluated the value of Ga-68-DOTATOC-PET-CT in routine screening of patients with MEN1.

Video-Assisted Laser Resection of Lung Metastases-Feasibility of a New Surgical Technique.

 Our pilot study describes our initial experience to do a laser resection of lung metastases under video-assisted thoracoscopic control via a minithoracotomy. With this approach, if needed, mediastinal lymphadenectomy is also possible.  In this study, 15 patients (11 men and 4 women, mean age: 60 years) with resectable lung metastases of different solid primary tumors (colorectal cancer in seven patients, melanoma in three patients, renal cell carcinoma in two patients, and one each with oropharyngeal cancer, breast cancer, and seminoma) were included.

Comparison of the local effects of a 600-μm bare fibre at high laser power on lung parenchyma: Nd:YAG laser 1320 vs. 1064 nm.

Lung metastases are often resected non-anatomically with a laser using a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser at a wavelength of 1320 nm with a laser output of up to 60 W. Usually the removal of lesions is carried out in contact mode by means of a bare fibre. We compared the local effects of an Nd:YAG laser at a wavelength of 1064 nm with those at a wavelength of 1320 nm using a 600-μm bare fibre in contact mode in an experimental model.

It has previously been shown that the inhibition of L-type calcium channels (LTCCs) decreases alcohol consumption, although the contribution of the central LTCC subtypes Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 remains unknown.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNA) in insulinomas: Indications and clinical relevance in a single investigator cohort of 47 patients.

Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the role and relevance of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy in the diagnostic work-up of insulinomas.

Methods: We have analysed the frequency, clinical indications, success rate (obtaining diagnostic tissue), diagnostic accuracy (in comparison to the pathological diagnosis after surgery), complications, and tolerability of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy and the localization and size of the lesions in 47 consecutive patients (29 females, 18 males; 46 ± 15 years) who had surgery for insulinoma following fasting test and were explored by single investigator EUS 1994-2015.

Results: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed in 21 % (10/47) of the patients.

Laparoscopic versus open distal pancreatectomy-a propensity score-matched analysis from the German StuDoQ|Pancreas registry.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess intraoperative, postoperative, and oncologic outcome in patients undergoing laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP) versus open distal pancreatectomy (ODP) for benign and malignant lesions of the pancreas.

Methods: Data from patients undergoing distal pancreatic resection were extracted from the StuDoQ|Pancreas registry of the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery. After propensity score case matching, groups of LDP and ODP were compared regarding demography, comorbidities, operative details, histopathology, and perioperative outcome.

Total Parathyroidectomy With Routine Thymectomy and Autotransplantation Versus Total Parathyroidectomy Alone for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism: Results of a Nonconfirmatory Multicenter Prospective Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.

Objective: This randomized controlled multicenter pilot trial was conducted to find robust estimates for the rates of recurrence of 2 surgical strategies for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) within 36 months of follow-up.

Background: SHPT is a frequent consequence of chronic renal failure. Total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation (TPTX+AT) and subtotal parathyroidectomy (SPTX) are the standard surgical procedures.

Systematic review of active surveillance versus surgical management of asymptomatic small non-functioning pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Background: The incidence of asymptomatic, sporadic, small non-functioning pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (NF-PNENs) has increased in recent decades. Conservative treatment has been advocated for these tumours. The aim of this study was systematically to evaluate the literature on active surveillance and to compare this with surgical management for asymptomatic sporadic small NF-PNENs.

The neural circuit mechanisms underlying the integration and functions of adult-born dentate granule cell (DGCs) are poorly understood. Adult-born DGCs are thought to compete with mature DGCs for inputs to integrate. Transient genetic overexpression of a negative regulator of dendritic spines, Kruppel-like factor 9 (Klf9), in mature DGCs enhanced integration of adult-born DGCs and increased NSC activation.

Initial Resistance of Carina Anastomoses with Increasing Tensile Stress: An ex vivo Model Comparing Different Suture Techniques.

Background: After resection of the carina with a length of more than 4 cm, anastomoses often need to be performed under tension despite maximum mobilization. If the patient cannot be extubated, the anastomosis remains under continued stress. Anastomoses of the carina can be constructed using various suture techniques, including single interrupted sutures, back wall running but front wall single interrupted sutures, and complete running suture.
