Community-Led Interventions to Address Food Inequity.

Approximately 1 in 6 children in the United States, and 1 in 5 children in our local county (Hamilton County, Ohio), are food insecure. Here, we describe a novel community-academic partnership to address food inequity through distributed leadership and shared power with local neighborhood leaders. Using neighborhood-level data and community voice, 3 Cincinnati neighborhoods with high rates of poverty and food insecurity were selected as the primary intervention targets.

Significance of organic matter in the process of aggregation of suspended sediments in retention reservoirs.

It is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the process by which suspended sediment (SS) in water is aggregated and deposited to ensure the proper use and management of storage reservoirs. The present study was an investigation into the varied granulometric composition of accumulated sediment, as well as an examination of the amounts of organic matter present and its origins. This study aimed to determine what underpins the process of aggregation of sediment suspended in reservoir water.

College students' patterns of electronic nicotine delivery system use and other substance use.

Electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use on college campuses increased dramatically in recent years. Little is known about how ENDS use among college students relates to other substance use. Undergraduates ( = 3,917) at a mid-sized Midwestern public university in the United States.

Trophic degradation predispositions and intensity in a high-flow, silted reservoir.

The objective of the work was to demonstrate the relationship between the natural environmental characteristics of a reservoir and its catchment and severity of trophic degradation. The shallow, highly-silted Rzeszów Reservoir (SE Poland) was the object of study. The impact on degradation of internal supply from accumulated bottom sediments was also assessed, using water and sediment sampled in 2013 and 2014.

Correlates of Resilience in Hispanic Young Adults.

Research on health disparities among Hispanic/Latino populations has begun to look at resiliency as a key component to the health risk profile of Hispanics. However, there are still gaps in the research about the specific factors. This study sought to examine the relationship between factors in 4 primary domains-behavioral, psychological, social, and cultural-and resilience in Hispanic young adults.

A new concept for risk analysis relating to the degradation of water reservoirs.

This paper presents a proposal for a procedure by which to analyse the risk of reservoirs being degraded. The body of water assessed for its susceptibility to degradation in line with the proposed procedure is Myczkowce Reservoir, SE Poland. This reservoir has a maximum capacity of ten million m and helps provide hydropower, by serving as a surge tank located above the main Solina Reservoir.

The influence of environmental factors on the carbon dioxide flux across the water-air interface of reservoirs in south-eastern Poland.

Studies concerning the emission of carbon dioxide (CO) were carried out in 2009-2012 for six reservoirs located in four provinces of south-eastern Poland. The CO flux across the water-air interface was measured using the "static chamber" method. The measured fluxes of CO (FCO) ranged from -30.

The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the coupled C, N, P and Si retention in complex of water reservoirs.

The Solina-Myczkowce complex of reservoirs (SMCR) accounts about 15 % of the water storage in Poland. On the base of historical (2004-2006 years) data, the mass balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon and dissolved silicon were calculated. Large, natural affluents were the main source of the biogenic compounds in the studied ecosystem, delivering 90 % of TOC, 87 % of TN and 81 % of TP and DSi load.

Proposal for an electron antineutrino disappearance search using high-rate 8Li production and decay.

This paper introduces an experimental probe of the sterile neutrino with a novel, high-intensity source of electron antineutrinos from the production and subsequent decay of 8Li. When paired with an existing ∼1 kton scintillator-based detector, this = 6.4 MeV source opens a wide range of possible searches for beyond standard model physics via studies of the inverse beta decay interaction ν(e) + p → e+ + n.

A magnetically driven piston pump for ultra-clean applications.

A magnetically driven piston pump for xenon gas recirculation is presented. The pump is designed to satisfy extreme purity and containment requirements, as is appropriate for the recirculation of isotopically enriched xenon through the purification system and large liquid xenon time projection chamber of EXO-200. The pump, using sprung polymer gaskets, is capable of pumping more than 16 standard liters per minute of xenon gas with 750 Torr differential pressure.
