Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus: emerging fetal teratogen.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), a rodent-borne arenavirus, is an often undiagnosed human fetal teratogen. We describe a neonate born with hydrocephalus and chorioretinitis after maternal second-trimester symptomatic LCMV infection. Previously reported affected infants are reviewed.

Pituitary ACTH and adrenocortical secretion in critically ill dogs.

Objective: To evaluate pituitary-adrenal function in a population of critically ill dogs by measuring serial plasma concentrations of basal cortisol, ACTH-stimulated cortisol, and endogenous ACTH.

Design: Prospective study.

Animals: 20 critically ill dogs admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU).

Phosphine-boranes as bidentate ligands: formation of [8,8-eta(2)-(eta(2)-(BH(3)).dppm)-nido-8,7-RhSB(9)H(10)] and [9,9-eta(2)-(eta(2)-(BH(3)).dppm)-nido-9,7,8-RhC(2)B(8)H(11)] from [8,8-(eta(2)-dppm)-8-(eta(1)-dppm)-nido-8,7-RhSB(9)H(10)] and [9,9-(eta(2)-dppm)-9-(eta(1)-dppm)-nido-9,7,8-RhC(2)B(8)H(11)], respectively.

The two clusters [8,8-(eta(2)-dppm)-8-(eta(1)-dppm)-nido-8,7-RhSB(9)H(10)] (1) and [9,9-(eta(2)-dppm)-9-(eta(1)-dppm)-nido-9,7,8-RhC(2)B(8)H(11)] (2) (dppm = PPh(2)CH(2)PPh(2)), both of which contain pendant PPh(2) groups, react with BH(3).thf to afford the species [8,8-eta(2)-(eta(2)-(BH(3)).dppm)-nido-8,7-RhSB(9)H(10)] (3) and [9,9-eta(2)-(eta(2)-(BH(3)).

Respiratory muscle fatigue.

The contribution of respiratory muscle fatigue to the development of ventilatory failure has been the subject of considerable interest and has stimulated much research. Experimental studies in dogs have shown respiratory muscle fatigue to be a cause of ventilatory failure in both cardiogenic and septic shock models. In clinical conditions resulting in acute or chronic hypercapnia, respiratory muscle fatigue is believed to occur; however, the specific role of fatigue has been difficult to prove.

Regulation of immunoproteasome subunit expression in vivo following pathogenic fungal infection.

The proteasome catalytic beta subunits LMP2, LMP7, and MECL-1 and two proteasome activator proteins, PA28 alpha and beta, are induced following exposure to IFN-gamma in vitro. Induction of these immunosubunits and the PA28 alpha/beta hetero-oligomer alters proteasome catalytic functions and specificity and enhances production of certain MHC class I epitopes. We sought to determine whether and to what extent proteasome subunit composition is regulated in vivo and to elucidate the mechanisms of such regulation.

Structural chemistry of arachno-nonaboranes.

Single-crystal conventional-tube and synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies of the anions in [NMe(4)][arachno-B(9)H(12)-4,8-Br(2)] 1 and K[arachno-B(9)H(14)] 2, and also of the series of adducts [arachno-B(9)H(13)-4-L], where L is P(CCH)(3) (3), NHEt(2) (4), NC(5)H(5) (5), or NH(2)CH(2)Ph (6), are reported. Structural studies of 1-6, determined at low temperatures, located all atoms, including bridging and endo-terminal hydrogen atoms. The basic boron-hydride clusters of these, and of all the other known species with the arachno nine-vertex i-nonanborane geometry reported in the literature, are isostructural and feature three bridging and two endo-terminal hydrogen atoms on the open face.

Aspergillus cholangitis: A late complication after Kasai portoenterostomy.

Ascending bacterial cholangitis can be a recurring complication in older children and adolescents who have undergone successful surgery for biliary atresia. The authors describe a 19-year-old girl with a history of recurrent late-onset, febrile cholangitis in whom persistent jaundice developed. Aspergillus terreus was isolated from her biliary fluid obtained at percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography.

Transcriptional regulation of the stem cell leukemia gene (SCL)--comparative analysis of five vertebrate SCL loci.

The stem cell leukemia (SCL) gene encodes a bHLH transcription factor with a pivotal role in hematopoiesis and vasculogenesis and a pattern of expression that is highly conserved between mammals and zebrafish. Here we report the isolation and characterization of the zebrafish SCL locus together with the identification of three neighboring genes, IER5, MAP17, and MUPP1. This region spans 68 kb and comprises the longest zebrafish genomic sequence currently available for comparison with mammalian, chicken, and pufferfish sequences.

The role of smooth muscle in regulating prostatic induction.

We have examined the role that smooth muscle plays during prostatic organogenesis and propose that differentiation of a smooth muscle layer regulates prostatic induction by controlling mesenchymal/epithelial interactions. During development of the rat reproductive tract, an area of condensed mesenchyme involved in prostatic organogenesis is formed. This mesenchyme (the ventral mesenchymal pad, VMP) is found in both males and females, yet only males develop a prostate.

Regulation of nitrous oxide emissions from soils irrigated with dairy farm effluent.

Animal slurries and effluents are commonly applied to soil as a source of organic N fertilizer. By increasing inorganic N, applying animal effluents may also increase soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Our objectives were to (i) determine if dairy farm effluent (DFE) irrigation increased short-term N2O emissions from a surface-drained peat soil and a freely drained mineral soil and (ii) see if this increase could be attributed to increased N availability, increased soil water content, or a combination of both factors.

Formation of metallaboranes from the group IV transition metals and pentaborane(9): crystal and molecular structure of [(Cp(2)Zr)(2)B(5)H(8)][B(11)H(14)].

The reactions between [(C(5)H(5))(2)MCl(2)] (where M = Ti, Zr, Hf) and Li[B(5)H(8)] in a variety of solvents have been investigated. In the case of Zr, a pale orange solid, mu-(Cp(2)ClZr)B(5)H(8) (1), is formed in 70% yield. Compound 1 exists as a B(5)H(9) cage with a Cp(2)ClZr moiety replacing a bridging H atom.

The nido-osmaboranes [2,2,2-(CO)(PPh(3))(2)-nido-2-OsB(5)H(9)] and [6,6,6-(CO)(PPh(3))(2)-nido-6-OsB(9)H(13)].

The structural characterization of the osmahexaborane 2-carbonyl-2,2-bis(triphenylphosphine)-nido-2-osmahexaborane(9), [Os(B(5)H(9))(C(18)H(15)P)(2)(CO)], (I), a metallaborane analogue of B(6)H(10), confirms the structure proposed from NMR spectroscopy. The structure of the osmadecaborane 6-carbonyl-6,6-bis(triphenylphosphine)-nido-6-osmadecaborane(13), [Os(B(9)H(13))(C(18)H(15)P)(2)(CO)], (IV), is similarly confirmed. The short basal B-B distance of 1.

Use of closed-suction drains to treat generalized peritonitis in dogs and cats: 40 cases (1997-1999).

Objective: To determine outcome of dogs and cats with generalized peritonitis treated by means of closed-suction drainage.

Design: Retrospective study.

Animals: 30 dogs and 10 cats with generalized peritonitis.

A model for the delivery of culturally competent community care.

Aim: To describe the proposed Culturally Competent Community Care (CCCC) model, and the process of development and testing of the model.

Background: Community health nurses are challenged to provide culturally competent care in all types of communities. However, existing models have not provided community nurses with specific guidelines, and none attempt to explain the effects of culturally competent care on populations in community settings.

Congenital lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection: decade of rediscovery.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is an underdiagnosed fetal teratogen. This diagnosis should be considered for infants and children with unexplained hydrocephalus, micro- or macrocephaly, intracranial calcifications, chorioretinitis, and nonimmune hydrops. The immunofluorescent antibody test is the only reasonable, commercially available, screening diagnostic tool.

Respiratory syncytial virus immune globulin: decisions and costs.

A decision analysis was used to evaluate the economic effectiveness of respiratory syncytial virus immune globulin (RSVIG) prophylaxis on selected pediatric populations at risk for developing RSV bronchiolitis or all respiratory illness-related hospitalizations. We compared costs, outcomes, and cost-effectiveness of administering RSVIG to no treatment in different pediatric populations, including those at risk of developing RSV-bronchiolitis and those at risk of developing any respiratory illness-related hospitalization. We observed that if only infants at high risk of severe RSV infections received treatment with RSVIG, a calculated cost saving of about 27,000 dollars per hospitalization prevented were realized.

Regulation of the stem cell leukemia (SCL) gene: a tale of two fishes.

The stem cell leukemia (SCL) gene encodes a tissue-specific basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) protein with a pivotal role in hemopoiesis and vasculogenesis. Several enhancers have been identified within the murine SCL locus that direct reporter gene expression to subdomains of the normal SCL expression pattern, and long-range sequence comparisons of the human and murine SCL loci have identified additional candidate enhancers. To facilitate the characterization of regulatory elements, we have sequenced and analyzed 33 kb of the SCL genomic locus from the pufferfish Fugu rubripes, a species with a highly compact genome.

The use of dietary supplements in pediatrics: a study of echinacea.

Alternative medical therapies are commonly used and have increased in popularity. Although patients may not always disclose the use of alternative therapies, they may seek advice regarding their use, especially for children. Regulation and standardization of these modalities, especially botanicals, is incomplete.

Bacteremic infection with Pediococcus: vancomycin-resistant opportunist.

Pediococci are recently recognized Gram-positive human pathogens, resistant to vancomycin and generally susceptible to penicillin. Infection in adults has been seen in patients with chronic underlying conditions as well as those with previous abdominal surgery. Two previous infants with congenital gastrointestinal malformations requiring surgical correction have been reported with sepsis attributable to Pediococcus sp.

Nursery survival for infants of birth weight 500-1500 grams during 1982-1995.

Objective: To evaluate nursery survival of very low birth weight infants (VLBW) over time, born in the same large inner-city hospital with a predominantly Hispanic population.

Methods: All liveborn VLBW infants weighing 500-1500 g at birth were included in four time periods of 2 years' duration during 1982 to 1995. Demographics were collected for the obstetric population.
