Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the risk of patients with severe COVID-19 acquiring resistance genes from carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) in an intensive care setting.
  • Conducted at a tertiary public hospital in Victoria, Australia, the analysis examined cases of three patients who shared room spaces and were on prolonged mechanical ventilation and broad-spectrum antibiotics, leading to the suspicion of gene transmission.
  • Despite screening 34 patients, no new CPE cases emerged, indicating independent gene acquisition rather than transmission; findings underscore the need for improved antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention to combat CPE resistance.

Microphytobenthos (MPB) inhabiting intertidal flats are exposed to large and sudden changes in temperature, often simultaneously with exposure to direct sunlight. These conditions are expected to negatively impact photosynthesis by exacerbating the photoinhibition under high light. This study addressed the photoinhibitory effects of short-term exposure to cold (5°C) and moderate heat (35°C) on MPB dominated by motile epipelic (EPL) and immotile epipsammic (EPM) diatom species, by evaluating the seasonal variation of photoinactivation and repair of photosystem II (PSII).

Background: The risk of transmission of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is increasingly understood to be greatest early after symptom onset, however, factors associated with prolonged and increased risk of transmission remain unclear. In settings where COVID-19 prevalence is low, there may be a benefit of extending the period that patients are isolated to decrease the risk of transmission. This study explored the duration of viral shedding in such a location, in patients with mild-moderate COVID-19 disease in Ballarat, Australia.

The airborne spread is the main route of human-to-human transmission of coronavirus, including e SARS CoV-2 virus causing the disease known as COVID-19. The implicit risk of aerosolization of SARS CoV-2 infective microdroplets while carrying out respiratory function tests has caused a significant limitation of activity in most Pulmonary Function Laboratories since the beginning of the pandemic. This document aims to update the recommendations for the management of Pulmonary Function Laboratories in the context of the COVID-19 outbreak in Argentina.

Background: Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are novel hypoglycemic agents which reduce reabsorption of glucose at the renal proximal tubule, resulting in significant glycosuria and increased risk of genital mycotic infections (GMI). These infections are typically not severe as reported in large systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the medications. These reviews have also demonstrated significant cardiovascular benefits through other mechanisms of action, making them attractive options for the management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Effective detection of microbiological contaminations present in medicinal cellular products is a crucial step to ensure patients' safety. In recent decades, several rapid microbiological methods have been developed and validated, but variabilities linked to the use of different resources have led to discordant validation of methods and performance results. Considering this, while developing an in-house BacT/Alert-based method, we evaluated all of the materials used in its validation.

To evaluate and validate the efficacy of disinfectants used in our cleaning procedure, in order to reduce pharmaceutical hospital surfaces' contaminations, we tested the action of three commercial disinfectants on small representative samples of the surfaces present in our hospital cleanrooms. These samples (or coupons) were contaminated with selected microorganisms for the validation of the disinfectants. The coupons were sampled before and after disinfection and the microbial load was assessed to calculate the Log reduction index.

Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP) are required to maintain their quality and safety throughout the production cycle, and they must be free of microbial contaminations. Among them, mycoplasma contaminations are difficult to detect and undesirable in ATMP, especially for immunosuppressed patients. Mycoplasma detection tests suggested by European Pharmacopoeia are the "culture method" and "indicator cell culture method" which, despite their effectiveness, are time consuming and laborious.
