Article Synopsis
  • Kidney transplantation is the best treatment for end-stage kidney disease, but long-term success can be affected by issues like recurrence of native kidney diseases such as C3 glomerulopathy (C3GN).
  • A case study documented a female kidney transplant recipient whose kidney function declined after 28 years due to two SARS-CoV-2 infections, alongside evidence of chronic rejection and features of C3GN in her recent biopsy.
  • The findings suggest that C3GN may have recurred late in this patient as a result of complement activation triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 infections, indicating a potential new risk factor for post-transplant complications.

Article Synopsis
  • C3 glomerulopathy is a rare kidney disease caused by abnormal activation of the complement system, leading to harmful deposits in the kidneys and frequent recurrence after kidney transplants.
  • More than half of kidney transplant recipients experience recurrence of this disease, which is the second most common cause of graft loss after organ rejection.
  • Current treatment options include corticosteroids and mycophenolate mofetil, but new anti-complement drugs are being studied, showing promise for improving outcomes in affected transplant patients.

Acellular dermal matrices (ADMs) are biological engineered tissues, which may provide an immunologically inert scaffold in breast reconstruction. Since the literature on imaging features of ADMs is limited, radiologists must be aware of the common imaging appearances of ADM, to differentiate normal conformation from residual or recurrent disease. Our purpose is to review the current role of ADMs in implant-based breast reconstruction, describing the normal imaging findings at ultrasound, mammography, and MRI also considering the possible changes over time.

Since SARS-CoV-2 spread through China at the end of 2019, COVID-19 has been probably the most difficult challenge in the last decades for healthcare systems all around the world, still representing a danger for fragile patients with different comorbidities. Chronic dialysis patients affected by COVID-19 experienced severe disease with a higher mortality rate compared to the general population. Morbidity and mortality of this severe acute respiratory syndrome depend on both acute respiratory failure and systemic immunological involvement with consequent inflammation-mediated injury.

The beneficial impact of dietary fiber on the prevention and management of several chronic conditions associated with aging, including diabetes, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, is well-known. High fiber intake has been associated with reduced inflammatory mediators counteracting the low-grade chronic inflammation typical of older age. In addition, dietary fiber improves postprandial glucose response and insulin resistance.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is an underdiagnosed disorder associated with mutations in the gene encoding alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT). Severe AATD can manifest as pulmonary emphysema and progressive liver disease. Besides the most common pathogenic variants S (E264V) and Z (E342K), many rarer genetic variants of AAT have been found in patients and in the general population.

Multiple myeloma (MM) progression and drug resistance depend on the crosstalk between MM cells and bone marrow (BM) fibroblasts (FBs). During monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) to MM transition, MM cell-derived exosomes (EXOs) reprogram the miRNA (miR) profile of FBs, inducing the overexpression miR-23b-3p, miR-27b-3p, miR-125b-5p, miR-214-3p, and miR-5100. Here, we demonstrate that the miR content of MM FB-derived EXOs (FB-EXOs) overlaps the miR profile of parental FBs by overexpressing comparable levels of miR-23b-3p, miR-27b-3p, miR-125b-5p, miR-214-3p, and miR-5100.

Multiple myeloma (MM) progression closely depends on the bidirectional crosstalk between tumor cells and the surrounding microenvironment, which leads to the creation of a tumor supportive niche. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as key players in the pathological interplay between the malignant clone and near/distal bone marrow (BM) cells through their biologically active cargo. Here, we describe the role of EVs derived from MM and BM cells in reprogramming the tumor microenvironment and in fostering bone disease, angiogenesis, immunosuppression, drug resistance, and, ultimately, tumor progression.

Neural Progenitor Cells (NPCs) are multipotent cells that are able to self-renew and differentiate into neurons. The size of the initial pool of NPCs during the brain development strongly affects the number of neurons that compose cortical multi-layer during development. Gonadal hormones can influence the balance between self-renewal and differentiation processes.

Purpose: Predicting mortality of older patients is a difficult, yet crucial task, which has lead to development of several prognostic tools. We hypothesized that the evaluation of oral health, which is often neglected, might be helpful to improve 1-year mortality prediction in a cohort of patients > 65 years admitted to an acute geriatric unit.

Methods: We assessed 200 patients using the Decayed, Missing or Filled Teeth tool, the Periodontal Screening and Recording tool and the Plaque Index.

Article Synopsis
  • Seismic assessment of masonry structures requires effective numerical models to handle their nonlinear behavior and uncertainties due to incomplete knowledge of various parameters.
  • The Bayesian approach, though not extensively explored for historic masonry, is gaining attention for its ability to integrate multiple information sources and improve parameter identification.
  • This study employs a Bayesian framework alongside probabilistic structural analyses to create reliable seismic fragility curves for non-isolated masonry towers, demonstrating advantages over traditional deterministic methods.

Aims: Apraxia may hinder oral self-care and is associated with poor oral hygiene. Intersecting Pentagons Test (IPT) is a simple screening tool for constructional apraxia (CA) that tests the ability to copy a bidimensional figure. In this study we investigated whether IPT is useful to identify subjects that need interventions to support oral health in a cohort of geriatric inpatients.

Research that focused on Theory of Mind (ToM) development in blind children showed that they were delayed, but not permanently deficient, in various types of false belief tasks. More recent studies reported first evidence of typical ToM development in blind children and suggested that more comprehensive tools to evaluate ToM had to be used. The current paper analyzed ToM development in blind children, using the adapted version of the ToM Storybooks; this is a standardized comprehensive test developed to provide a reliable and stable measurement, in comparison with the false belief tasks.

Splenic artery (SA) ligation can be performed during liver transplantation (LT) to avoid portal hyperperfusion, which is involved in the pathogenesis of both small-for-size and SA syndrome. The SA can also be used as an inflow for arterial reconstruction. Exceptionally, SA interruption or agenesis has been associated with positive remodeling of collateral arteries supplying the spleen via the left gastric artery (LGA), short gastric vessels, and the gastroepiploic arcade (GEA), with subsequent severe upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.

A series of palladium(II) (1-3) and platinum(II) chloride complexes (4 and 5) with 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (terpy) derivatives substituted at the 4' position, was synthesized and fully characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of complexes 2, 3 and 5 showed tridentate coordination of the 4'-substituted terpyridine (terpy) ligands to the metal center. Moreover, in vitro cytotoxic activity of these complexes toward a panel of human cancer cell lines (lung cancer A549, colorectal cancer HCT116, ovarian cancer IGROV-1) and toward normal cell line HDF (dermal fibroblast) was determined by Trypan Blue exclusion assay.

This paper summarizes the results of a two-day dynamic monitoring of Michelangelo's David subject to environmental loads (city traffic and pedestrian loading induced by tourists visiting the Accademia Gallery). The monitoring was carried out by a no-contact technique using an interferometric radar, whose effectiveness in measuring the resonant frequencies of structures and historic monuments has proved over the last years through numerous monitoring activities. Owing to the dynamic behavior of the measurement system (radar and tripod), an accelerometer has been installed on the radar head to filter out the movement component of the measuring instrument from the measurement of the David's displacement.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a global health problem being the fourth most common cause of death due to cancer worldwide. Oxaliplatin plays a key role in current CRC treatment but shows serious drawbacks, such as a high systemic toxicity and the frequent insurgence of Pt resistance. In search of novel and more efficacious Pt-based drugs for CRC treatment, we synthesized and characterised PtI(DACH), an oxaliplatin analogue.

The trinuclear platinum cluster [Pt(μ-PBu)(CO)]CFSO (I) was designed featuring the presence of a nearly equilateral platinum triangle bridged by three di-tert-butylphosphide ligands; in addition, each platinum center bears a terminal carbonyl ligand. This triplatinum cluster was initially developed in view of applications in the field of cluster-containing innovative materials. Yet, due to the large success of platinum complexes in cancer treatment, we also decided to explore its cytotoxic and anticancer properties.

In the last few years gold(III) complexes have attracted growing attention in the medicinal chemistry community as candidate anticancer agents. In particular some organogold(III) compounds manifested quite attractive pharmacological behaviors in preclinical studies. Here we compare the chemical and biological properties of the novel organogold(III) complex [Au(bipy(dmb)-H)(NH(CO)CH3)][PF6] (Aubipy(aa)) with those of its parent compounds [Au(bipy(dmb)-H)(OH)][PF6] (Aubipy(c)) and [Au2(bipy(dmb)-H)2)(μ-O)][PF6]2 (Au2bipy(c)), previously synthesized and characterized.
