Inverted Mattress Knotless Repair of Medial Ulnar Collateral Ligament Avulsion Injury Using Flat Braided Suture Internal Brace.

Direct repair of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries with suture augmentation has been successful in properly selected patients lacking chronic attritional wear of the medial elbow. Described is a Speed-Fix technique for direct UCL repair using SutureTape, with Brace augmentation. The Speed-Fix repair technique uses an inverted mattress knotless repair with a knotless SwiveLock anchor and FiberTape suture, which allows for theoretical compression at the repair site.

ISLAND Campus: a fee-free formal university educational intervention in mid- to later-life to reduce modifiable risk factors for dementia and improve cognition.

Introduction: Previous research has tended to focus on early-life education for dementia risk reduction, yet there are great gains for building cognitive reserve in mid- to later-life through educational interventions. ISLAND (Island Study Linking Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disease) Campus offered free university study to all ISLAND participants, with flexible in-person/online learning models to remove educational, socioeconomic and geographical barriers. Here the core hypothesis of ISLAND Campus was investigated: that engagement in later life education leads to improvements in modifiable risk factors for dementia, cognition and blood-based biomarkers.

An Integrated Rapid Response Model for Pediatric Patients Requiring In-Patient Medical Stabilization: Lessons Learned to Enable Regional Capacity Building.

There was an unprecedented surge in admissions for medical stabilization of pediatric patients with eating disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario. Eleven hospitals established an integrated rapid response model to ensure timely in-patient access for these patients. This population was cared for in re-allocated community hospital beds as a result of engaging hospital leadership, strengthening partnerships, consulting experts, leveraging existing resources and developing regional bed access strategies.

Research for all: building a diverse researcher community for the All of Us Research Program.

Objectives: The NIH All of Us Research Program (All of Us) is engaging a diverse community of more than 10 000 registered researchers using a robust engagement ecosystem model. We describe strategies used to build an ecosystem that attracts and supports a diverse and inclusive researcher community to use the All of Us dataset and provide metrics on All of Us researcher usage growth.

Expression-Driven Genetic Dependency Reveals Targets for Precision Medicine.

Cancer cells are heterogeneous, each harboring distinct molecular aberrations and are dependent on different genes for their survival and proliferation. While successful targeted therapies have been developed based on driver DNA mutations, many patient tumors lack druggable mutations and have limited treatment options. Here, we hypothesize that new precision oncology targets may be identified through "expression-driven dependency", whereby cancer cells with high expression of a targeted gene are more vulnerable to the knockout of that gene.

Reevaluating Informed Consent: Integrating Shared Decision-Making into Spinal Surgery for Better Patient Outcomes.

Study Design: Narrative review.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to answer the following questions: (1) What is the quality of informed consent in spine surgery, including both neurosurgery and orthopaedic spine surgery? (2) What limitations impede the ability of surgeons to engage in effective shared decision-making (SDM) and obtain adequate informed consent? (3) What strategies and solutions may improve the quality of informed consent and SDM? (4) What factors decrease the incidence of litigation in spine surgery?

Methods: N/A.

Results: SDM is a collaborative process where patients are involved in their treatment choices through open communication about risks, alternatives, and postoperative expectations.

Development of Robust Steel Alloys for Laser-Directed Energy Deposition via Analysis of Mechanical Property Sensitivities.

To ensure consistent performance of additively manufactured metal parts, it is advantageous to identify alloys that are robust to process variations. This paper investigates the effect of steel alloy composition on mechanical property robustness in laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED). In situ blending of ultra-high-strength low-alloy steel (UHSLA) and pure iron powders produced 10 compositions containing 10-100 wt% UHSLA.

The Impact of the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court Decision on Orthopaedic Residency Programs: A Collaborative Orthopaedic Education Research Group (COERG) Survey.

Recent changes in reproductive health care policy have now led to state-specific differences in abortion care access across the United States. Members of the medical community in particular have issued concerns regarding these new policies and their potential impact on graduate medical training.  Objectives: The purpose of this study was to sample orthopaedic surgery residency programs to gauge their perceptions of the Dobbs decision and its impact on residency training.

Background: Systems change approaches are increasingly adopted in public health to address complex problems. It is important that measures of systems change be developed so that the effects of systems change on health outcomes can be evaluated. Organisational practices are potential levers for systems change.

Efficacy and Safety of a Patient Selection Tool for Predicted Discharge at an Ambulatory Surgical Center: A Pilot Study.

Background: There is a paucity of validated risk stratification tools to assess which patients can safely and predictably undergo outpatient total hip (THA) or knee arthroplasty (TKA) in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC).

Methods: Our novel patient selection tool was prospectively applied to 190 consecutive primary THA and TKA performed by a single surgeon at a single ASC. We identified the proportion of patients discharged home the same day, those requiring a one-night stay, or those with failed discharge within 23 hours.

Use of All of Us data to increase health literacy and research skills in high school students.

Objective: This case study describes how an All of Us engagement project returned value to community by strengthening high school students' capacity to serve as health advocates.

Materials And Methods: Project activities included health literacy education and research projects on the influence of environmental, societal, and lifestyle factors on community health disparities. The research project involved use of the Photovoice method and All of Us data.

Purpose: Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections were widely reported during the COVID-19 pandemic, acting as a hidden source of infection. Many existing studies investigating asymptomatic immunity failed to recruit true asymptomatic individuals. Thus, we conducted a longitudinal cohort study to evaluate humoral- and cell-mediated responses to infection and vaccination in well-defined asymptomatic young adults (the Asymptomatic COVID-19 in Education [ACE] cohort).

Administration or consumption of classic psychedelics (CPs) leads to profound changes in experience which are often described as highly novel and meaningful. They have shown substantial promise in treating depressive symptoms and may be therapeutic in other situations. Although research suggests that the therapeutic response is correlated with the intensity of the experience, the neural circuit basis for the alterations in experience caused by CPs requires further study.

Relative impacts of Varroa destructor (Mesostigmata:Varroidae) infestation and pesticide exposure on honey bee colony health and survival in a high-intensity corn and soybean producing region in northern Iowa.

The negative effects of Varroa and pesticides on colony health and survival are among the most important concerns to beekeepers. To compare the relative contribution of Varroa, pesticides, and interactions between them on honey bee colony performance and survival, a 2-year longitudinal study was performed in corn and soybean growing areas of Iowa. Varroa infestation and pesticide content in stored pollen were measured from 3 apiaries across a gradient of corn and soybean production areas and compared to measurements of colony health and survival.

Honey bee parasites remain a critical challenge to management and conservation. Because managed honey bees are maintained in colonies kept in apiaries across landscapes, the study of honey bee parasites allows the investigation of spatial principles in parasite ecology and evolution. We used a controlled field experiment to study the relationship between population growth rate and virulence (colony survival) of the parasite Varroa destructor (Anderson and Trueman).

Agrochemical exposure is a major contributor to ecological declines worldwide, including the loss of crucial pollinator species. In addition to direct toxicity, field-relevant doses of pesticides can increase species' vulnerabilities to other stressors, including parasites. Experimental field demonstrations of potential interactive effects of pesticides and additional stressors are rare, as are tests of mechanisms via which pollinators tolerate pesticides.

Divergent Subregional Information Processing in Mouse Prefrontal Cortex During Working Memory.

Working memory (WM) is a critical cognitive function allowing recent information to be temporarily held in mind to inform future action. This process depends on coordination between key subregions in prefrontal cortex (PFC) and other connected brain areas. However, few studies have examined the degree of functional specialization between these subregions throughout the phases of WM using electrophysiological recordings in freely-moving animals, particularly mice.

Background: The annual meetings hosted by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) present the latest prepublication literature in shoulder and elbow surgery, facilitating early dissemination of novel findings that impact clinical decision-making. Evaluating the publication rate of presented abstracts at ASES conferences becomes crucial in assessing the quality of research showcased, as these presentations often precede the peer-review process.

Methods: The ASES conference programs from 2015-2019 were reviewed to identify presented abstracts.

This study examined the proportion of Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) across various speaking and leadership roles at recent American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meetings.  Design: Meeting programs from the AAOS were publicly accessed and compiled between 2016 and 2021. Two categories of AAOS meeting participants were created.
