Myelin vesicles have been obtained from isolated rat brain myelin and shown by electron microscopy to consist of single bilayer membranes. The yield of the preparation is approximately 25% of the myelin proteins. The vesicles show a typical myelin protein pattern on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and contain activity for the myelin marker enzyme, 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide-3'-phosphohydrolase (CNPase).

In September and October 1981 six cases of pneumonia occurred among men working in a power station under construction. Three were identified as cases of legionella pneumonia and two others had serology suggestive of legionella infection. In a sample of 92 men from the site 10 had low levels of antibodies to legionella; a similar sample of men working on an adjacent site showed none with positive serology.

An outbreak of staphylococcal food poisoning in Europe caused by contaminated lasagne was detected and monitored by both national and international surveillance systems. The common source was a pasta-producing factory in Italy and high levels of Staphylococcus aureus were detected in packets of dried lasagne distributed in Luxembourg, the UK, France and Italy. Forty-seven cases were reported in the UK.

A comparison of computed tomography (CT) and dual photon absorptiometry (DPA) in the measurement of spinal bone mineral was made in 44 subjects of whom 26 had vertebral crush fractures. Although CT measures only trabecular bone within the vertebral body whilst DPA measures the whole vertebral segment, a good correlation was observed (r = 0.80) when these quantities were expressed in dimensionally similar units.

In January 1984 the River Dee in north Wales was contaminated with phenol, with subsequent contamination of the tap water received by about two million consumers. A retrospective postal survey of 594 households was undertaken to determine whether consumption of this contaminated water was associated with illness. Subjects in areas that received contaminated water reported significantly more gastrointestinal illness than those in a nearby unexposed area (32.

The paper presents a daily analysis of the language recovery of a patient who was globally aphasic at the time of her first observation and who had recovered language, as measured by the Western Aphasia Battery, at the time of her discharge 14 days later. The paper emphasizes the relatively regular growth of normal syntactic, lexical, and pragmatic features coupled with similar regular decreases in aphasic features. Observations of both phenomena are necessary to describe language recovery.

Geopetitia aspiculata was found in 12 species of Passeriformes, one species of Coraciiformes, and one species of Charadriiformes which died in a free-flight area in the Tropical House at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, Winnipeg, Canada. The nematodes occurred in chronic inflammatory cysts attached to the serosa of the posterior end of the esophagus, proventriculus, and the anterior part of the gizzard. Posterior ends of worms were observed to extend from the cyst into the lumen of the proventriculus.

July 1983

National surveillance of legionnaires' disease in England and Wales identified 588 cases during the years 1979--1982. The majority of cases appeared to be sporadic but 32 clusters of two or more cases were recognised, 24 in association with hotels, seven with hospitals and one with a construction site. Reports (3 published and 3 unpublished) on the investigation and control of six outbreaks are reviewed.

An outbreak of Salmonella napoli infection in England and Wales in 1982 was detected by the surveillance of routine reports of salmonella infections from hospital and public-health laboratories. Epidemiological investigation quickly identified two types of small chocolate-covered bars, imported from Italy, as the vehicles of infection, and subsequently both were found to be contaminated with the organism. The prompt recognition of this outbreak and rapid identification of the vehicle of infection enabled four-fifths of the consignment of contaminated chocolate to be withdrawn from the market.

Fourteen recirculating cooling water systems were surveyed during the summer, 1981, to see what factors might influence the prevalence of Legionella pneumophila. The effect on the organism of three anti-microbials was studied, each in two systems, by intermittent treatment at two week intervals. L.
