Efficacy of a vein visualisation device for facilitating peripheral venous line placement in adult patients with sickle cell disease: A randomised clinical trial.

Background: Intravenous (IV) access is often required for the treatment of vaso-occlusive crises in patients with sickle cell disease, but can be particularly challenging due to recurrent venous damage. The AccuVein® device, uses near-infrared light technology to visualise veins for easier venepuncture.

Methods: A randomised, controlled trial of the efficacy of the AccuVeinAV400® device in the replacement of peripheral venous lines during a vaso-occlusive crisis was conducted at two centres in France.

Intracerebroventricular anaerobic dopamine in Parkinson's disease with L-dopa-related complications: a phase 1/2 randomized-controlled trial.

Continuous compensation for cerebral dopamine deficiency represents an ideal treatment for Parkinson's disease. Dopamine does not cross the digestive and blood-brain barriers and is rapidly oxidized. The new concept is the intracerebroventricular administration of anaerobic dopamine (A-dopamine) using an abdominal pump connected to a subcutaneous catheter implanted in the third ventricle, near the striatum.

Synapse and primary cilia dysfunctions in Autism Spectrum Disorders. Avenues to normalize these functions.

Aim: An update on the plasticity of the brain networks involved in autism (autism spectrum disorders [ASD]), and the increasing role of their synapses and primary non-motile cilia.

Methods: Data from PubMed and Google on this subject, published until February 2024, were analyzed.

Results: Structural and functional brain characteristics and genetic particularities involving synapses and cilia that modify neuronal circuits are observed in ASD, such as reduced pruning of dendrites, minicolumnar pathology, or persistence of connections usually doomed to disappear.

Personality and quality-of-life improvement after apomorphine infusion in Parkinson's disease.

People with Parkinson's disease with motor fluctuations can be treated by continuous subcutaneous apomorphine infusion (CSAI) to reduce their symptoms. Nonetheless, factors are lacking to predict patients' quality-of-life amelioration after CSAI. This pilot study aimed to evaluate associations between personality dimensions and quality-of-life improvement after 6 months of CSAI.

Regulatory framework for the assessment of the impacts of plant protection products on biodiversity: review of strengths and limits.

The placing of plant protection products (PPPs) on the market in the European Union is governed by numerous regulations. These regulations are among the most stringent in the world, however they have been the subject of criticisms especially because of the decline in biodiversity. The objectives of this work were to review (1) the functioning and actors involved in the PPP framework processes, (2) the construction of the environmental risk assessment focused on biodiversity, and (3) the suggested ways to respond to the identified limits.

[Monitoring student skills during community pharmacy placements: Retrospective analysis of dashboards].

Objectives: The aim of this work is to describe the skills considered to have been acquired by students during their professional practice placements, with particular emphasis on skills related to the new roles of pharmacists.

Methods: Skills are monitored during the professional practice placement using the dashboard included in the guide designed by the college of community pharmacy placement supervisors. Each skill is assessed at three points during the placement.

And in 2018, the emergence of advanced practice nursing led to the creation of a new category of professionals, advanced practice nurses (APN). The Groupe de réflexion avec les associations de malades (GRAM)—a joint scientist/association think tank at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM)—has reflected, on the basis of internal surveys and the experiences of its members, on focus points concerning good practice to help partners involved in participatory research projects. In this article, we list these focus points and highlight the need to afford partners opportunities for dialogue, in order to give good chances of success to participatory research projects, in both the interest of associations and researchers.

A Pluridisciplinary Tracheostomy Weaning Protocol for Brain-Injured Patients, Outside of the Intensive Care Unit and Without Instrumental Assessment: Results of Pilot Study.

Concurrently to the recent development of percutaneous tracheostomy techniques in the intensive care unit (ICU), the amount of tracheostomized brain-injured patients has increased. Despites its advantages, tracheostomy may represent an obstacle to their orientation towards conventional hospitalization or rehabilitation services. To date, there is no recommendation for tracheostomy weaning outside of the ICU.

Limitation of the migration of plasticizers from medical devices through treatment with low-pressure cold plasma, polydopamine coating, and annealing.

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is widely used in the manufacture of medical devices. The plasticizers added to PVC are potentially toxic for humans, likely to migrate, and thus unintentionally administered to patients. The objective of the present study was to reduce the migration of plasticizer (1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, diisononylester (DINCH) or trioctyltrimellitate (TOTM)) from PVC by implementing a three-step surface treatment process: (i) pretreatment with low-pressure argon cold plasma, (ii) polydopamine coating, and (iii) post-treatment with cold plasma exposure or thermal treatment at 140 °C.

Impact of therapeutic education on the evolution of social representations of medication in patients with Parkinson's disease: A quantitative and qualitative study (ETPARK REMED).

Background: Among the workshops of our therapeutic patient education (TPE) program, the medication workshop (TPEM workshop) is very frequently proposed to patients in view of the difficulties they encounter related to the complexity of managing antiparkinsonian treatment. Patients' appropriation of their medications could depend on their social representations.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of our TPEM workshop on the social representations PD patients have of their medications and to compare it with that of another therapeutic intervention such as a talking group defined as the control group.

Main conclusions and perspectives from the collective scientific assessment of the effects of plant protection products on biodiversity and ecosystem services along the land-sea continuum in France and French overseas territories.

Preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services is critical for sustainable development and human well-being. However, an unprecedented erosion of biodiversity is observed and the use of plant protection products (PPP) has been identified as one of its main causes. In this context, at the request of the French Ministries responsible for the Environment, for Agriculture and for Research, a panel of 46 scientific experts ran a nearly 2-year-long (2020-2022) collective scientific assessment (CSA) of international scientific knowledge relating to the impacts of PPP on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) without boundaries: research and interventions beyond classifications.

On June 2022, the 2nd Webinar "Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD) without boundaries took place at the Imagine Institute in Paris and was broadcasted live and in replay. The aim of this webinar is to address NDD in a dimensional rather than in a categorical approach. Several speakers were invited to present their researches on the subject.

High-resolution structures of a siderophore-producing cyclization domain from Yersinia pestis offer a refined proposal of substrate binding.

Nonribosomal peptide synthetase heterocyclization (Cy) domains generate biologically important oxazoline/thiazoline groups found in natural products, including pharmaceuticals and virulence factors such as some siderophores. Cy domains catalyze consecutive condensation and cyclodehydration reactions, although the mechanism is unknown. To better understand Cy domain catalysis, here we report the crystal structure of the second Cy domain (Cy2) of yersiniabactin synthetase from the causative agent of the plague, Yersinia pestis.

Factors influencing accuracy when preparing injectable drug concentrations in appliance with clinical practice: a norepinephrine case study.

Errors in injectable preparations with high-risk drugs can be fatal. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing the accuracy of high-risk injectable drug concentrations in appliances used for intensive care unit preparation practices. Norepinephrine (NE) was chosen as an example of a high-risk medication drug.

Genetically modified macrophages accelerate myelin repair.

Preventing neurodegeneration-associated disability progression in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) remains an unmet therapeutic need. As remyelination prevents axonal degeneration, promoting this process in patients might enhance neuroprotection. In demyelinating mouse lesions, local overexpression of semaphorin 3F (Sema3F), an oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) attractant, increases remyelination.

Sleep Medication in Older Adults: Identifying the Need for Support by a Community Pharmacist.

Many older adults take benzodiazepines and sedative-hypnotics for the treatment of sleep disorders. With a view to considering the possible discontinuation of hypnotics, the objectives of the present study were to describe bedtime habits and sleep patterns in older adults and to identify the sleep medications taken. An expert group developed a structured interview guide for assessing the patients' bedtime habits, sleep patterns, and medications.
