Background: Rural areas are increasingly moving back into the focus of social research, especially in the context of health care. As the shortage of general practitioners (GP) in rural areas is a significant challenge in Germany, there are several programs to counteract underuse effectively, acutely, and sustainably. One of those programs is 'Beste Landpartie Allgemeinmedizin' (BeLA), which was developed to strengthen primary care in rural areas and to sustainably promote young doctors to work as general practitioners in rural regions through didactical and financial support.

It is widely regarded that the anti-tumour immune response drives clearance of tumours and leads to prolonged survival in patients. However, tumours are adept at reprogramming the surrounding microenvironment to an immunosuppressive milieu to prevent successful immune directed killing. Adhesion of cells to the extracellular matrix is essential for regulating cellular processes such as survival, proliferation and migration.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast disseminated cancer cells (DCCs) can stay inactive in the lungs for a long time, but the reasons for this dormancy are not fully understood.
  • Research shows that alveolar macrophages in lung tissue help keep these cancer cells dormant by using a signaling molecule called TGF-β2.
  • When macrophages are depleted or the cancer cells lose their ability to respond to TGF-β2, this can reactivate the cancer cells, allowing them to grow and metastasize.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed low vaccination rates among the elderly in France and identified barriers to their immunization.
  • A qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with seniors revealed that while they prioritize health through exercise and diet, they do not view vaccination as crucial for preventing infections.
  • Finding that seniors often overlook the link between vaccination and maintaining autonomy, the study suggests using the health benefits of vaccines to encourage greater uptake among this population.

Introduction: Africa is experiencing a gradual demographic shift due to rising life expectancy and increasing urbanisation. In sub-Saharan Africa, elderly individuals typically reside with their children. The rise in life expectancy by almost a decade and the prevalence of precarious living conditions raise concerns about the sustainability of the healthcare system, which has traditionally relied on intergenerational solidarity.

  • The kisspeptin receptor (GPR54 or KISS1R) plays a crucial role in reproduction, metabolism, and cancer, but there are few tools available to visualize it directly in cells and tissues.
  • Researchers have developed a new acid-resistant fluorescent probe called Trp-BODIPY PLUS, which allows for the synthesis of fluorescent bioactive peptides that can easily bind to target receptors.
  • Using Trp-BODIPY PLUS, scientists created innovative kisspeptin-based probes that enabled them to successfully image and track GPR54 receptor activity in human cells and mouse pancreatic islets.

Background: Although the health benefits of physical activity (PA) are recognized, prostate cancer patients do not follow PA recommendations. Barriers to PA, whether physical, environmental or organizational, are known. Furthermore, even when these barriers are overcome, this achievement is not systematically accompanied by lifestyle change.

Background: The Emergency unit of the hospital (Department) (ED) is the fastest and most common way for most French general practitioners (GPs) to respond to the complexity of managing older adults patients with multiple chronic diseases. In 2013, French regional health authorities proposed to set up telephone hotlines to promote interactions between GP clinics and hospitals. The main objective of our study was to analyze whether the hotlines and solutions proposed by the responding geriatrician reduced the number of hospital admissions, and more specifically the number of emergency room admissions.

Metastasis - the systemic spread of cancer - is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Although metastasis is commonly thought of as a unidirectional process wherein cells from the primary tumor disseminate and seed metastases, tumor cells in existing metastases can also redisseminate and give rise to new lesions in tertiary sites in a process known as "metastasis-from-metastases" or "metastasis-to-metastasis seeding." Metastasis-to-metastasis seeding may increase the metastatic burden and decrease the patient's quality of life and survival.

Article Synopsis
  • Moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) is recognized for preventing chronic diseases; however, recent studies are increasingly focusing on light intensity physical activity (LPA) due to its potential role in reducing sedentary behavior (SB).
  • A study involving 1,011 older adults tracked various physical activities, revealing that higher levels of both LPA and MVPA were associated with lower rates of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality over an 18-year follow-up.
  • Results demonstrated that while LPA and MVPA significantly impacted mortality rates, SB did not show a significant relationship, highlighting the need for more understanding of LPA's effects on public health.

The G protein-coupled kisspeptin receptor (GPR54 or KISS1R) is an important mediator in reproduction, metabolism and cancer biology; however, there are limited fluorescent probes or antibodies for direct imaging of these receptors in cells and intact tissues, which can help to interrogate their multiple biological roles. Herein, we describe the rational design and characterization of a new acid-resistant BODIPY-based amino acid (Trp-BODIPY PLUS), and its implementation for solid-phase synthesis of fluorescent bioactive peptides. Trp-BODIPY PLUS retains the binding capabilities of both short linear and cyclic peptides and displays notable turn-on fluorescence emission upon target binding for wash-free imaging.
