Detection of Enterobacterales resistant to polymyxins using Rapid Polymyxins NP test.

Two hundred isolates of Enterobacterales were tested by Rapid Polymyxins NP for the detection of polymyxin resistance and compared to the reference test broth microdilution (BMD). The sensitivity and specificity of the NP test were 98% and the results are faster than the BMD, decreasing from approximately 24 to 2 h.

Blood lead levels and cognitive functioning: A meta-analysis.

Objective: The neurotoxicity of lead is well-known and even low exposure levels potentially impact neurocognitive abilities. This metaanalysis aimed to investigate associations between neurocognitive performance and lead exposure in adults and further assess potential effect thresholds.

Material And Methods: Articles indexed in Medline published until January 2017 reporting associations between lead exposure, blood lead, cognitive abilities and sensomotoric performance were included.

Aim: Not much is known on risks for reduced earning capacity pensions (RECP) for patients with specific diseases. Our study focusses on individuals who have completed a course of rehabilitation due to cardiovascular disease.

Methods: This study is based on a scientific use file from the German statutory pension insurance that covers completed rehabilitations between 2006-2013.

This study investigated the effect of 7-chloro-4-(phenylselanyl) quinoline (4-PSQ) to restore the cognitive impairment caused by aging in male Wistar rats. Moreover, modulation of neuroplasticity markers, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and cholesterol levels was performed. Aged rats were intragastrically treated with 4-PSQ (5 mg/kg) for 7 days.

Visual cues that predict intuitive risk perception in the case of HIV.

Field studies indicate that people may form impressions about potential partners' HIV risk, yet lack insight into what underlies such intuitions. The present study examined which cues may give rise to the perception of riskiness. Towards this end, portrait pictures of persons that are representative of the kinds of images found on social media were evaluated by independent raters on two sets of data: First, sixty visible cues deemed relevant to person perception, and second, perceived HIV risk and trustworthiness, health, and attractiveness.

Microplastic-mediated transport of PCBs? A depuration study with Daphnia magna.

The role of microplastic (MP) as a carrier of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to aquatic organisms has been a topic of debate. However, the reverse POP transport can occur if relative contaminant concentrations are higher in the organism than in the microplastic. We evaluated the effect of microplastic on the PCB removal in planktonic animals by exposing the cladoceran Daphnia magna with a high body burden of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB 18, 40, 128 and 209) to a mixture of microplastic and algae; daphnids exposed to only algae served as the control.

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Mucopolysaccharidoses: Past, Present, and Future.

Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has proven to be a viable treatment option for a selected group of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS), including those with MPS types I, II, IVA, VI, and VII. Early diagnosis and timely referral to an expert in MPS are critical, followed by a complete examination and evaluation by a multidisciplinary team, including a transplantation physician. Treatment recommendations for MPS are based on multiple biological, sociological, and financial factors, including type of MPS, clinical severity, prognosis, present clinical signs and symptoms (disease stage), age at onset, rate of progression, family factors and expectations, financial burden, feasibility, availability, risks and benefits of available therapies such as HSCT, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), surgical interventions, and other supportive care.

Strombolian volcanic explosions are commonly attributed to the rise and burst of conduit-filling gas slugs. The magmas associated with strombolian activity, however, are typically not only volatile-rich but also highly crystalline, with mush regions in the shallow plumbing system, where an exsolved volatile phase may also be abundant. Through analogue experiments, we explore a new mechanism to form gas slugs and strombolian explosions.

Synergy of polymyxin B, tigecycline and meropenem against carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae complex isolates.

Here, we evaluated the combinations of antibiotics polymyxin B (PMB), tigecycline (TGC) and meropenem (MEM) by time-kill curves (TKC) against carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae isolates. Combination of PMB/TGC and PMB/MEM showed promising results in sub-inhibitory concentration of PMB indicating the possibility of reducing the dose of PMB used in the treatment.

Several techniques have been reported to reconstruct this region and according to the literature, pedicled perforator flaps are the first reconstructive option. The anterolateral thigh flap is considered the gold standard, while surprisingly the pedicle deep inferior epigastric (DIEP) flap in vertical fashion has not been frequently employed, if compared with its muscular counterpart, the pedicle vertical rectus abdomins flap (vRAM).

Regulation of epithelial migration by epithelial cell adhesion molecule requires its Claudin-7 interaction domain.

Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is a glycoprotein on the surface of epithelial cells that is essential for intestinal epithelial integrity and expressed at high levels in many epithelial derived cancers and circulating tumor cells. Here we show the effect of EpCAM levels on migration of Madin-Darby-Canine Kidney (MDCK) epithelial cells. MDCK cells depleted of EpCAM show increased activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and of myosin, and increased cell spreading and epithelial sheet migration into a gap.

Diversity of miniaturized frogs of the genus Adelophryne (Anura: Eleutherodactylidae): A new species from the Atlantic Forest of northeast Brazil.

The number of species of frogs in the South American genus Adelophryne has increased in recent years, and it has become apparent that this group contains a substantial amount of undescribed diversity. Currently the genus contains nine described species and five candidate species. Here we describe the tenth species of the genus Adelophryne from the municipality of Igrapiúna, southern Bahia state, Brazil.

Performance of rapid tests for carbapenemase detection among Brazilian Enterobacteriaceae isolates.

The global emergence of carbapenemases led to the need of developing new methods for their rapid detection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the rapid tests for carbapenemase-producing and non-producing Enterobacteriaceae. Carbapenem non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae from a surveillance study submitted to a multiplex real time PCR for carbapenemase detection were included in this study.

Dissemination of bla is mediated by IncX plasmids and the Tn6435 transposon.

In Enterobacteriaceae, the bla genes have been identified on plasmids in different regions of the world. The OXA-370 is a plasmid-encoded OXA- enzyme reported in two distinct regions of Brazil. Recently, we demonstrate that the bla gene is disseminated among several Enterobacteriaceae species and clones, indicating a high potential for dissemination.
