Neoangiogenesis plays a key role in diverse pathophysiological conditions, including liver regeneration. Yet, the source of new endothelial cells (ECs) remains elusive. By analyzing the regeneration of the liver vasculature in irradiation-based myeloablative and nonmyeloablative bone marrow transplantation mouse models, we discovered that neoangiogenesis in livers with intact endothelium was solely mediated by proliferation of resident ECs.

Objective: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterised by progressive impairment in visuospatial and perceptual function. Recent findings show that memory functioning can also be compromised early in the course of disease. In this study, we investigated the neural basis of memory impairment in PCA, and hypothesised that correlations would be observed with parietal cortex rather than classic medial temporal memory structures.

Given the habitat moisture (air humidity or soil moisture) preferences of many forest bryophytes, we explored whether the depth-to-water (DTW) index, derived from remotely sensed Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data, was related to fine-scale patterns of spatial variation in bryophyte abundance, diversity, and composition. The goal was to assess the utility of the topographic DTW index as a tool to decipher trends in bryophyte assemblages along a site wetness gradient in the boreal mixedwood forest. Discrete Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data were acquired over the entire Ecosystem Management Emulating Natural Disturbance (EMEND) experimental site located in northwestern Alberta, Canada (56° 46' 13″ N, 118° 22' 28″ W), based on which we calculated a mathematical index of approximate depth to water at or below the soil surface at 1 m resolution using the Wet-Areas Mapping model.

Objective: Second-generation antipsychotics vary in their propensity to cause serious cardiometabolic side effects. In addition, use of two or more antipsychotics (polypharmacy) may lead to additive side effects and has not been shown to be consistently more effective than monotherapy. This study examined the use of academic detailing with audit and feedback to improve antipsychotic prescribing practices, including antipsychotic polypharmacy and utilization of medication with high or low risk of cardiometabolic side effects ("high risk" or "low risk," respectively).

The detection of hotspot mutations in key cancer genes is now an essential part of the diagnostic work-up in molecular pathology. Nearly all assays for mutation detection involve an amplification step. A second single nucleotide variant (SNV) on the same allele adjacent to a mutational hotspot can interfere with primer binding, leading to unnoticed allele-specific amplification of the wild type allele and thereby false-negative mutation testing.

Metaplastic breast carcinoma comprises a heterogeneous group of tumours with poorly understood pathogenesis. A subset of metaplastic breast cancers show myoepithelial differentiation and constitute a morphological spectrum with ill-defined borders from fibromatosis-like spindle cell carcinoma to myoepithelial carcinoma. In a series of 34 metaplastic breast cancers with spindle cell and myoepithelial differentiation, we found recurrent genetic aberrations, which set them apart from other metaplastic breast cancers and suggest a unique pathogenesis.
