Article Synopsis
  • An updated checklist of Mozambique's vascular plants lists 7,099 taxa (including species, subspecies, and varieties) from 226 families and 1,746 genera, based on various sources like literature and online databases.
  • The checklist highlights that 6,171 taxa are native to Mozambique, with a notable flora endemism level of 9.59%, including both strict and near-endemic species.
  • It also assesses extinction risk for 1,667 taxa, identifying 158 as Vulnerable and 119 as Endangered, while providing information on geographical distribution, vernacular names, and traditional plant uses.*

The first comprehensive plant checklist for the Bvumba massif, situated in the Manica Highlands along the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border, is presented. Although covering only 276 km, the flora is rich with 1250 taxa (1127 native taxa and 123 naturalised introductions). There is a high proportion of Orchidaceae and Pteridophyta, with both groups showing a higher richness than for adjacent montane areas, which may be due to the massif's relatively high moisture levels as a result of frequent cloud cover.

Protecting aboveground carbon stocks in tropical forests is essential for mitigating global climate change and is assumed to simultaneously conserve biodiversity. Although the relationship between tree diversity and carbon stocks is generally positive, the relationship remains unclear for consumers or decomposers. We assessed this relationship for multiple trophic levels across the tree of life (10 organismal groups, 3 kingdoms) in lowland rainforests of the Congo Basin.
