Aggregates of chondroitin-keratan sulfate proteoglycan (aggrecan) and hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan) are the major space-filling components of cartilage. A glycoprotein, link protein (LP; 40-48 kDa) stabilizes the aggregate by binding to both hyaluronic acid and aggrecan. In the absence of LP, aggregates are smaller (as estimated by rotary shadowing of electron micrographs) and less stable (they dissociate at pH 5) than they are in the presence of LP.

The hyaluronan-binding region (HABR) was prepared from pig laryngeal cartilage aggrecan and the amino acid sequence was determined. The HABR had two N-termini: one N-terminal sequence was Val-Glu-Val-Ser-Glu-Pro (367 amino acids in total), and a second N-terminal sequence (Ala-Ile-Ser-Val-Glu-Val; 370 amino acids in total) was found to arise due to alternate cleavage by the signal peptidase. The N-linked oligosaccharides were analysed by examining their reactivity with a series of lectins.

The evaluation of 58 breast reconstructions operated in Boucicaut Hospital demonstrated positive result. The authors review the techniques used for contralateral breast symmetrization. The policy generally adapted has been to perform two sequential operations: 1st step: implantation of a prefilled prosthesis and contralateral breast symmetrization; 2d step: reconstruction of areolo-nipple complex and refinement of contralateral breast.

One hundred and sixteen elderly female in-patients with confirmed diagnoses of senile or arteriosclerotic dementia were tested on the Paired-Associate Learning Test (PALT) and Cognitive Assessment Scale (CAS) of CAPE and were followed up annually for six years. Comparison of those patients who had died by each follow-up date with those who had survived showed that in general the latter had had better PALT and CAS scores.

In a randomised controlled trial of different types of psychotherapy for bulimia 92 women were assigned to receive cognitive-behaviour therapy (n = 32), behaviour therapy (30), or group therapy (30) for 15 weeks and a further 20 (controls) assigned to remain on a waiting list for 15 weeks. Eating behaviour and psychopathology were assessed by standard methods. At the end of the trial the controls had significantly higher scores than the treated groups on all measures of bulimic behaviour.

The case histories of five men who met DSM-III criteria for bulimia and details of their physical characteristics are given. Various eating disorder questionnaires were administered and the results indicated that most of these instruments would not have identified the men as suffering from an eating disorder. The necessity of caution in asserting the prevalence of bulimia using these measures is emphasised.

One hundred and seven elderly female in-patients with confirmed or suspected diagnoses of dementia were assessed by the Paired-Associate Learning Test (PALT), and the Cognitive Assessment Scale (CAS) and Behaviour Rating Scale (BRS) of CAPE. Eighteen months later, 62 patients were still alive. These had significantly better scores on the 'easy' set of PALT and on BRS than the non-survivors; the differences on the 'mediate' and 'hard' sets, and on CAS, while in the predicted direction, were not significant.

The purposes of this study were to: (1) evaluate the progression of cardiac involvement in Duchenne's muscular dystrophy using systolic time intervals (PEP/LVET); (2) determine if the degree of cardiac involvement bears a relation to the severity of skeletal muscle disease; and (3) describe the M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiographic findings. In 1970, systolic time intervals were studied in 16 patients. During the 10-year interim, two patients were lost to follow-up study, and five patients died.

This article describes the community organization experience of the Family Life Development Center at Cornell University in connection with the federally financed Resource Center on Child Abuse and Neglect which it has operated since 1975. Early on, the Center decided to concentrate its efforts on organizing local task forces on child abuse and neglect which would work at the community level to improve services for families and children afflicted with the problem. As a result, over 50 such groups were organized and they have stimulated creation of over 100 new services including Parents Anonymous chapters, parent aides, multidisciplinary teams and parenting education projects.

Kinetic studies were made of the hydrolysis by trypsin of alpha-N-acetylglycyl-L-lysine methyl ester and of its neutral analogue alpha-N-acetylglycyl-epsilon-N-formyl-L-lysine methyl ester. The latter substance is a moderately good substrate for trypsin, and this observation is discussed in terms of the substrate specifically of the enzyme. The actions of trypsin and of the lysine-specific proteinase from Armillaria mellea on both a native and a formylated polypeptide substrate were compared.

Lymphangiosarcoma is a fatal complication of postmastectomy lymphedema. The pathogenesis of lymphangiosarcoma in chronic lymphedema is a combination of two factors. First, the edematous region responds in a manner similar to "immunologically privileged sites.

Breast cancer in association with pregnancy and lactation is rare, but presents a therapeutic problem of considerable magnitude. The outlook for such patients is less favorable than that of nonpregnant, nonlactating women, probably because the stage of the disease is more advanced when it is discovered. The most significant factor in the poorer prognosis is physician delay in diagnosis and therapy.
