The continuous increase of water distribution networks (WDNs) in size and complexity poses significant management challenges, including a high risk of failures. Due to the intrinsic interconnected feature of water flow, including losses, this study proposes a methodology based on graph correlation and multilayer network analysis for leak detection and localization in WDNs with multiple components (infrastructure, control devices, hydraulic sensors). The detection process involves correlating monitored data to create a temporal graph and classify vertices.

Plastic waste, especially discarded fishing nets, and electroplating sludges pose significant environmental challenges, impacting marine ecosystems and contributing to pollution. In alga cultivation, invasive microorganisms often hinder growth, necessitating strategies to combat these issues. This study aimed to develop recycled substrates for alga cultivation by repurposing fishing nets and enhancing their surfaces with antibacterial properties using copper oxide (CuO).

Purpose Of Review: Since its discovery, most research on fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) has focused on its antihyperglycemia properties. However, attention has recently shifted towards elucidating the ability of FGF21 to lower circulating lipid levels and ameliorate liver inflammation and steatosis. We here discuss the physiology of FGF21 and its role in lipid metabolism, with a focus on genetics, which has up until now not been fully appreciated.

Malaria represents a challenging global public health task, with being the predominant parasite in Brazil and the most widely distributed species throughout the world. Developing a vaccine against malaria demands innovative strategies, and targeting gametocyte antigens shows promise for blocking transmission prevention. Among these antigens, Pvs47, expressed in gametocytes, has shown remarkable efficacy in transmission blocking.

  • Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is becoming essential in critical care because it allows for rapid decision-making without needing to transfer patients out of the ICU, reducing risks and delays.* -
  • While CT scans are still standard for many conditions, POCUS enhances the safety of invasive procedures in the ICU, such as placing vascular catheters and draining fluid collections.* -
  • In nephrology, POCUS provides valuable diagnostic insights for acute kidney injury, helping to quickly rule out conditions like hydronephrosis and gather crucial hemodynamic information for personalized treatment.*

This paper describes the results of the study I Want More! The Lives of Sex Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic, which is part of the EPIC community research program. The study analyzed the effects of the pandemic on the lives of cis, trans and travesti sex workers in nine Brazilian states and 11 cities throughout 2020 and 2021. This article focuses on the qualitative component of the study, which was based on semi-structured, remote and face-to-face interviews carried out with 43 sex workers, and its comparison with the quantitative component.

  • Biodegradable POS nanoparticles (POS-NPs) can effectively encapsulate different drugs for treating skin disorders, with a focus on caffeine, quercetin, hydrocortisone, and adapalene.
  • The size and charge of the nanoparticles varied significantly based on the drug used, affecting their stability and encapsulation efficiency.
  • While some formulations, like hydrocortisone and caffeine, showed unsuitable skin penetration, adapalene had a high permeation rate and low toxicity in tests with reconstructed human epidermis.

  • Leptospirosis is a significant infectious disease impacting animals and humans, particularly in cows within the Northeastern Brazil’s Caatinga biome.
  • The study examined the role of genital and transplacental infections on the spread of Leptospira spp. in pregnant cows, collecting various biological samples for analysis.
  • Results showed a high incidence of transplacental infection, with 86.67% of embryos and fetuses testing positive for Leptospira DNA, highlighting the effectiveness of this transmission route.

This study is a systematic literature review of the association between lists of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) in clinical practice and health outcomes of older adults followed up in primary health care. For this purpose, the PRISMA protocol was used to systematize the search for articles in the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Central, LIVIVO and LILACS databases, in addition to the gray literature. Studies with randomized clinical trials were selected, using explicit criteria (lists) for the identification and management of PIM in prescriptions of older patients in primary care.

Objective: We compared the diameter of the jugular foramen (JF) between normal individuals and those with a diagnosis of craniovertebral junction abnormalities, such as Chiari malformation type I (CMI) and/or basilar invagination (BI).

Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study measured the diameter of the right and left JF on magnetic resonance imaging scans of patients divided into 4 groups: 68 with combined CMI and BI (CMI+BI), 42 with isolated BI, 45 with isolated CMI, and 102 control cases. The t test determined sex differences, and univariate analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc test assessed JF differences between groups.

Geopropolis resins are produced by stingless bees (Meliponinae), developed from the collection of resinous materials, waxes and exudates, from the flora of the region where stingless bees are present, in addition to the addition of clay or earth in its composition. Several biological activities are attributed to Ethanol Extracts of Geopropolis (EEGP). The bioactive properties are associated with the complex chemical composition that the samples have.

Background: Multidimensional health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instruments, such as the EQ-5D, are increasingly used to assess inequalities in health. However, it is necessary to explore the ability of these instruments to capture differences between population groups, especially in low/middle-income countries. This study aimed to investigate whether the EQ-5D-3L instrument can detect differences in HRQOL between groups of different socioeconomic status (SES) in Brazil.

This study aims to analyze changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and safety in patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) prescribed a homogenous selection of cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs). Patients prescribed Adven CBMPs (Curaleaf International, UK) for GAD were identified from the UK Medical Cannabis Registry. Primary outcomes were changes in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) from baseline up to 12 months, including GAD-7, Single-Item Sleep Quality Scale (SQS), and EQ-5D-5L.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the internal structure and validity of the Brazilian version of the Anterior Knee Pain Scale (AKPS) for individuals with patellofemoral pain.
  • The research involved 101 participants, revealing that the 11-item structure—after excluding poorly performing items—exhibited strong fit indices and a high correlation (r=0.966) with the full version of the scale.
  • Ultimately, the revised 11-item version of the AKPS was found to be the most effective in assessing knee pain.

Proteins activate small intestinal calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) and/or peptide transporter 1 (PepT1) to increase hormone secretion, but the effect of small intestinal protein sensing and the mechanistic potential of CaSR and/or PepT1 in feeding and glucose regulation remain inconclusive. Here we show that, in male rats, CaSR in the upper small intestine is required for casein infusion to increase glucose tolerance and GLP1 and GIP secretion, which was also dependent on PepT1 (ref. ).
