The 'Developmental Origins of Health and Disease' (DOHaD) hypothesis postulates that exposures during critical periods of development and growth, including maternal hyperglycemia, can have significant consequences for short- and long-term health in offspring. The influence of fetal status on maternal (patho)physiology is less well understood but gaining attention. Fetal sex specifically may be an independent risk factor for a range of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including increased gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) frequency with male fetuses in multi-ethnic populations.

The tire-rubber-derived ozonation product of -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-'-phenyl--phenylenediamine (6PPD), -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-'-phenyl--phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-Q), was recently discovered to cause acute mortality in coho salmon (). -Phenylenediamines (PPDs) with variable side chains distinct from 6PPD have been identified as potential replacement antioxidants, but their toxicities remain unclear under environmentally relevant ozone conditions. We herein tested the multiphase gas-surface ozone reactivity of four select PPDs [6PPD, -isopropyl-'-phenyl--phenylenediamine (IPPD), ,'-diphenyl--phenylenediamine (DPPD), and -phenyl-'-cyclohexyl--phenylenediamine (CPPD)] and evaluated the toxicity of their reaction mixtures in coho salmon, rainbow trout (), and fathead minnow ().

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of severe respiratory diseases like influenza and COVID-19, primarily due to glycemic variability rather than average blood glucose levels.
  • A study used blood samples and continuous glucose monitoring from individuals with type 1 diabetes to examine how glycemic variability affects T cell responses to influenza.
  • Higher glycemic variability was linked to a decreased proportion of specific T cells responding to the influenza virus, indicating the importance of monitoring glycemic variability for understanding immune responses in diabetic individuals.

Wisdom is the hallmark of social judgment, but how people across cultures recognize wisdom remains unclear-distinct philosophical traditions suggest different views of wisdom's cardinal features. We explore perception of wise minds across 16 socio-economically and culturally diverse convenience samples from 12 countries. Participants assessed wisdom exemplars, non-exemplars, and themselves on 19 socio-cognitive characteristics, subsequently rating targets' wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

The elevated concentrations of organohalogen contaminants in the endangered St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) belugas have prompted the hypothesis that aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activity may be a contributor towards their potential adverse effects. While indirect associations between AhR and contaminant levels have been reported in SLE beluga tissues, AhR activity was never directly measured.

Incidences of thyroid disease, which has long been hypothesized to be partially caused by exposure to thyroid hormone disrupting chemicals (TDCs), have rapidly increased in recent years. However, known TDCs can only explain a small portion (∼1%) of human transthyretin (hTTR) binding activities in environmental samples, indicating the existence of unknown hTTR ligands. In this study, we aimed to identify the major environmental hTTR ligands by employing protein ffinity urification with ontargeted nalysis (APNA).

Introduction: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) affect up to 10% of all pregnancies annually and are associated with an increased risk of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. This guideline represents an update of the Society of Obstetric Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (SOMANZ) guidelines for the management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy 2014 and has been approved by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992. In approving the guideline recommendations, NHMRC considers that the guideline meets NHMRC's standard for clinical practice guidelines.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the correlation between human gut bacteria and host physiology, mediated primarily via nuclear receptors (NRs). Despite this body of work, the systematic identification and characterization of microbe-derived ligands that regulate NRs remain a considerable challenge. In this study, we discover a series of diindole molecules produced from commensal bacteria metabolites that act as specific agonists for the orphan constitutive androstane receptor (CAR).

Thyroid hormones (THs) play an important role in a wide range of crucial biological functions related to growth and development, and thyroid antibodies (TAs) can influence the biosynthesis of THs. Epidemiological studies have indicated that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) could induce thyroid disruption, but studies on teenagers living in areas with high PFAS exposure are limited. This cross-sectional study focused on 836 teenagers (11- 15 years) living near a Chinese fluorochemical industrial plant.

In 2015, the international community agreed to end Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) by 2030. However, the target is unlikely to be met as changes in practice, including medicalized female genital mutilation/cutting (mFGM/C), challenge abandonment strategies. This paper critically reviews the current World Health Organization (WHO) definition of mFGM/C to demonstrate that mFGM/C, as currently defined, lacks detail and clarity, and may serve as an obstacle to the collection of credible, reliable, and comparable data relevant to targeted FGM/C prevention policies and programs.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetes mellitus is increasing globally and is linked to more severe influenza infections, but the specific reasons for this connection are still unclear.
  • High blood sugar levels in diabetes might adversely affect CD8 T cells, which are crucial for fighting viral infections like influenza.
  • A study found that higher HbA1c levels (indicating worse blood sugar control) decreased TNF-α production from CD8 T cells in response to the influenza virus, suggesting that high glucose may weaken the immune response to influenza in diabetics.
