These adaptations suggest that hydrogen peroxide acts not only as a stressor but primarily as a signaling molecule, triggering specific metabolic pathways that regulate growth and plant resilience. Sugarcane is a crucial crop for sugar and ethanol production, often influenced by environmental signals.

Drug use patterns and health problems among people who use drugs in Guinea-Bissau (2022): A cross-sectional survey using respondent-driven sampling.

Background: Little data exists on the use of cocaine, methamphetamine, tramadol and heroin or related health conditions in Guinea Bissau. We aimed to estimate drug use practices and the prevalence of selected blood-borne infections, depression and population size estimates of people who use injectable drugs in Guinea-Bissau.

Methods: We used respondent-driven sampling to recruit adults who use injectable drugs in this cross sectional survey in three cities (Bissau, Bafatá and Gabú) between July and September 2022.

Introduction: The Therapeutic Community Model narrows the gap in substance use disorder's network of assistance in Brazil by offering residential treatment to socially vulnerable populations. Due to a historical lack of evidence-based approaches, the government has established treatment guidelines and has been trying to implement training and monitoring methods.

Method: This study analysed real-world data from the monitoring system implemented in the largest network of institutions receiving public funds in the State of Sao Paulo.

A 7-Month Multidisciplinary Healthy Lifestyle Intervention Effectively Improved Cardiometabolic Risk Profile of Firefighters.

Objective: We investigated the effect of a 7-month healthy lifestyle intervention on cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRF) among male career military firefighters (FFs).

Methods: Forty-nine FFs participated in a 7-month workplace multiddisciplinary healthy lifestyle intervention designed to reduce CMRF through exercise, diet, and improved sleep. Medical assessments, accelerometry, and surveys at the beginning and end determined program effectiveness.

Mobility and HIV vulnerabilities among female sex workers in Guinea-Bissau: findings from an integrated bio-behavioral survey.

Background: Mobility is an important risk determinant for HIV given the potential for intermittent access to HIV services. Mobility may be particularly relevant among female sex workers, (FSW) who have been shown to be at high risk for HIV in settings around the world. Data regarding the role mobility plays in exacerbating HIV risks among FSW across Sub-Saharan Africa remains limited, and data on FSW in Guinea-Bissau is sparse.

Signaling circuits crucial to systemic physiology are widespread, yet uncovering their molecular underpinnings remains a barrier to understanding the etiology of many metabolic disorders. Here, we identified a copper-linked signaling circuit activated by disruption of mitochondrial function in the murine liver or heart that resulted in atrophy of the spleen and thymus and caused a peripheral white blood cell deficiency. We demonstrated that the leukopenia was caused by α-fetoprotein, which required copper and the cell surface receptor CCR5 to promote white blood cell death.

Here, we describe the generation and characterization of synthetic antigen-binding fragments (Fabs) against Notch-1. Three single-framework synthetic Fab libraries, named S, F, and modified-F, were screened against the recombinant human Notch-1 extracellular domain using phage display.

Unlabelled: Motor fluctuations in Parkinson's disease (PD) are a frequent long-term complication. Knowledge is limited on the prevalence and incidence of non-motor symptoms (NMS) fluctuations, especially in Brazil.

Objective: The objective of this study was to verify the frequency of NMS fluctuations and its relationship with other aspects of PD in patients followed at an outpatient movement disorders clinic.

Imaging Immune Cells Using Fc Domain Probes in Mouse Cancer Xenograft Models.

Tracking immune responses is complex due to the mixture of cell types, variability in cell populations, and the dynamic environment. Tissue biopsies and blood analysis can identify infiltrating and circulating immune cells; however, due to the dynamic nature of the immune response, these are prone to sampling errors. Non-invasive targeted molecular imaging provides a method to monitor immune response, which has advantages of providing whole-body images, being non-invasive, and allowing longitudinal monitoring.

Phage display is commonly used to select target-binding antibody fragments from large libraries containing billions of unique antibody clones. In practice, selection outputs are often highly heterogenous, making it desirable to recover sequence information from the selected pool. Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) enables the acquisition of sufficient sequencing reads to cover the pool diversity, however read-lengths are typically too short to capture paired antibody complementarity-determining regions (CDRs), which is needed to reconstruct target-binding antibody fragments.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2018, with 147 mothers/newborns aged up to 30 days. The Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool and the Lingual Frenulum Evaluation Protocol for Infants were the instruments used.

To develop imaging and therapeutic agents, antibodies are often conjugated randomly to a chelator/radioisotope or drug using a primary amine (NH) of lysine or sulfhydryl (SH) of cysteine. Random conjugation to NH or SH groups can require extreme conditions and may affect target recognition/binding and must therefore be tested. In the present study, nimotuzumab was site-specifically labeled using ∆N-SpyCatcher/SpyTag with different chelators and radiometals.

Overexpression of insulin growth factor receptor type 1 (IGF-1R) is observed in many cancers. Antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) with PEGylated maytansine (PEG-DM1) show promise in vitro. We developed PEG-DM1 ADCs with low and high drug to antibody ratios (DAR) using an anti-IGF-1R antibody cixutumumab (IMC-A12).

The social status associated with dental experience among Brazilian children.

Dentists should be alert not only to clinical variables, but also to socioeconomic, psychological and cultural factors, which have all been associated with the experience of dental caries. The aim of this study of was to assess social status and dental experience among Brazilian children. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 1367 male and female children aged six and seven years enrolled at public and private schools in the city of Recife (Brazil) in 2013.

Does previous dental care experience make the child less anxious? An evaluation of anxiety and fear of pain.

Purpose: Evidence has shown an inverse correlation between previous dental care experience and anxiety levels in children. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of dental anxiety in Brazilian schoolchildren and to evaluate the association between previous experience with the dentist and anxiety and fear of pain.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study carried out in two cities in Brazil with 1191 schoolchildren aged 6-12 years.

Hip pain in a child can have infectious, inflammatory, traumatic, neoplastic, or developmental causes, which can make the diagnosis challenging. Meticulous history taking and a detailed clinical examination guide the radiological investigation. In this article, we address some of the main causes of hip pain in childhood and their findings on diagnostic imaging.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a transmembrane cell surface receptor that is frequently overexpressed and/or mutated in many cancers. Therapies targeting EGFR have poor outcomes due to the lack of reliable diagnostic tests to monitor EGFR. Current EGFR diagnostic methods are invasive, requiring biopsies, which limits tumor sampling and availability.

Next-generation sequencing-guided identification and reconstruction of antibody CDR combinations from phage selection outputs.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have been employed in several phage display platforms for analyzing natural and synthetic antibody sequences and for identifying and reconstructing single-chain variable fragments (scFv) and antigen-binding fragments (Fab) not found by conventional ELISA screens. In this work, we developed an NGS-assisted antibody discovery platform by integrating phage-displayed, single-framework, synthetic Fab libraries. Due to limitations in attainable read and amplicon lengths, NGS analysis of Fab libraries and selection outputs is usually restricted to either VH or VL.
