After briefly reviewing in outline the role and biochemistry of hormonal receptors, the author draws a number of logical conclusions concerning hormone treatment of carcinomas of the breast and of the endometrium.

Beta hemolytic streptococcal infections, usually of group G and C, were identified in red foxes in France. In a study of 31 animals, septicemia and jaundice were found to be the main signs of the disease. Gross and microscopic lesions consisted of generalized inflammation of viscera and joints, jaundice, cellulitis and abscesses of spleen, liver, lungs and kidneys.

[Pregnancy in adolescents].

J Gynecol Obstet Biol Reprod (Paris)

January 1986

225 women aged less than 18 years of age at the start of their pregnancies were seen in the Saint Antoine Hospital between July 1977 and December 1983 (1.2%). These pregnancies were studied using data-processing.

Systematic assays of glycosylated haemoglobin were performed to verify that pregnant women with glycosuria and normal fasting blood glucose and glucose tolerance tests had no disturbances in glycoregulation . Glycosylated haemoglobin levels were measured in 25 glycosuric women on the second (n = 11) or third (n = 14) trimester of pregnancy and compared with those of 81 non-glycosuric women of similar weight and gestational age. On the third trimester, glycosylated haemoglobin levels were significantly higher in glycosuric women of normal weight than in controls (5.

It has long been known, because of the epidemiological criteria and because of the results of treating with hormones, that certain cancers of the breast and of the endometrium are hormone-dependent. This has been confirmed by the discovery of hormone receptors in these tumours. These are oestradiol receptors and progesterone receptors.

The authors have made a growth cure of the bi-parietal diameter of the African infant using observations taken on 350 African women who were followed up and delivered in their department. Over all these curves of growth are smaller than the reference curves used in France. This study is a first contribution to the understanding of the mechanics of obstetrics in the African woman.

[Delivery of black African women in France].

J Gynecol Obstet Biol Reprod (Paris)

April 1985

The African population is a specific entity. It is younger, the women have more babies and the pelvis is frequently narrow. Caesarean section for a narrow pelvis should be considered very carefully in this population, while the idea of feto-pelvic disproportion has to be a clinical one.

The purpose of this study is to monitor the haemodynamic changes that occur in pregnancy using ultrasound. Although all previous studies do demonstrate an increase in frequency and the volume of the cardiac output, the results seem to be different as far as variations in volume during systole occur and the mechanisms by which they occur. These differences can be explained by problems associated with the different methods used.

The metabolic changes in carbohydrate (fasting blood sugar and blood sugar levels two hours after taking 70 g of glucose orally as well as insulin and glycosylated A1c haemoglobin) and also lipid metabolism as total and fractional HDL, triglycerides and alphaprotein B, were compared in 43 patients of a mean age of 48.6 years who had hysterectomy with castration. These patients were divided into two random groups: the first group (23 women) received hormone replacement treatment in a dose of 1.

[Chronic inflammatory bowel disease and pregnancy].

J Gynecol Obstet Biol Reprod (Paris)

February 1984

The authors have looked out the obstetric history of 13 young women who were suffering from ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease between the years 1978 and 1982 and who had 25 pregnancies. This study made it possible to analyse the influence of these pathological conditions on the evolution of pregnancy as well as the effect of pregnancy on the evolution of the disease. The different therapeutic treatments that have to be given for these diseases, such as medical treatment using Sulphasalazine, enemata, corticosteroids and Azathioprin, or surgical treatments have been examined in their relationship with pregnancy.

The use of prostaglandins is one of the best techniques for second trimester abortion. The authors present 40 patients aborted by a new two stage technique: First: ripening of the cervix a tylose gel containing 5 or 10 mg PGF2 alpha every 12 hours during 3 days. Then, if abortion is not obtained, previously published techniques are used: intra-amniotic injection (40 mg PGF2 alpha) or intra-cervical infusion (2 mg/hour).

It is possible to induce labour in pathological pregnancies after artificial ripening of the cervix. The present study concerns 70 patients (45 primipara, 25 multipara). The main pathologies are hypertension of pregnancy and pregnancies past dates.

This work shows the effect of a policy of reducing the amounts of antibiotics prescribed, and reports on the effect on the rate of infection in a maternity unit where systematic antibiotic cover for patients with premature rupture of the membranes was stopped. Breaking of the waters with loss of liquor makes infection of the contents of the sac almost inevitable; but we have found over a period of five years that with the exception of certain strains of Group B streptococci infection with bacteria from vaginal flora rarely gives rise to severe infection in the infant. This balance sheet was drawn up: 350 infections of the liquor in 13.

A study on dietary and smoking behavior during pregnancy was performed between January, 1976, and September, 1979, at the St. Antoine Maternity Hospital in Paris. In addition to the routine clinical examinations at the third, sixth, eight, and ninth months of pregnancy, the women were systematically questioned about their dietary and tobacco habits.

[A case of post partum gonococcal arthritis].

J Gynecol Obstet Biol Reprod (Paris)

February 1983

The authors report a case of gonorrhoea occurring immediately after delivery, characterized by acute inflammatory polyarthritis. The diagnosis was made from swabs taken from the lochia that were cultured on enriched media. The outcome of the disease treated with penicillin was good after 48 hours.

The effects of two galenic processes (micronisation and addition of oil) on the bioavailability of progesterone administrated orally were studied. After ingestion of progesterone (200 mg), mean plasma progesterone rapidly rises up to the 2nd hour and reaches levels of the normal luteal phase (12.6 +/- 2.
