Methicillin-resistant (MRS) bacteria, including methicillin-resistant and methicillin-resistant (MRSP), pose a significant threat in veterinary medicine, given their potential for zoonotic transmission and their implications for companion animals and humans' health. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of MRS and anti-microbial resistance patterns at a university clinical hospital in Madrid, Spain. Samples were collected from both the environment and hospital staff at Veterinary Clinical Hospital of Alfonso X el Sabio University.

Contrasting fertilization and phenological stages shape microbial-mediated phosphorus cycling in a maize agroecosystem.

Phosphorus (P) is essential for plants but often limited in soils, with microbes playing a key role in its cycling. P deficiency in crops can be mitigated by applying by-products like sludge and struvite to enhance yield and sustainability. Here, we evaluated the contribution of four different types of fertilizers: i) conventional NPK; ii) sludge; iii) struvite; and iv) struvite+sludge in a semiarid maize plantation to the availability of P and the responses of the soil microbiome.

Being aggressive and by extension, dominant, is an important mechanism for determining access to resources such as mates or territories. While predictors of contest outcome and dominance are increasingly studied, we have a poor understanding of how they vary across populations. Here, I use the widely distributed Australian agamid lizard, the Jacky dragon (Amphibolurus muricatus), to quantify variation in features predicting contest outcome among males of different populations.

Hospital variation in quality indicators for patient blood management in total knee and hip arthroplasty: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: Anaemia, blood loss, and blood transfusion are critical aspects of patient care in major orthopaedic surgery. We assessed hospital adherence to guideline-recommended Patient Blood Management (PBM) care, analysed variations between hospitals, and validated two composite indicators of hospital PBM performance in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included all primary TKA and THA procedures performed during 2021 across 39 hospitals in Spain.

This review aims to analyze and document the presence of patient blood management (PBM) recommendations in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) guidelines. The aim of ERAS programs is to improve outcomes and optimize patient recovery by reducing the stress response to surgery. PBM programs pursue the objective of improving outcomes by boosting and conserving the patient's own blood.

Use of viscoelastic tests in the principle bleeding scenarios in Spanish hospitals.

Viscoelastic tests are designed to study the dynamics of clot formation, identify coagulopathies in real time, arrive at a diagnosis, and guide patient-specific administration of haemostatics. They are mainly used to treat clinically significant bleeding in any setting, and are also used in other situations involving clinically relevant alterations in haemostasis, such as coagulopathy in critically ill patients. These tests are administered following evidence-based algorithms that vary depending on the clinical context.

Jacky dragons (Amphibolurus muricatus) are ubiquitous in south-eastern Australia and were one of the first Australian reptiles to be formally described. Because they are so common, Jacky dragons are widely used as a model system for research in evolutionary biology and ecology. In addition, their distribution along the Great Dividing Range of eastern Australia provides an opportunity to examine the influence of past biogeographical processes, particularly the expansion and contraction of forest habitats, on the diversification of this iconic agamid lizard.

Spanish multicenter normative studies (NEURONORMA project): normative data and equivalence of four BNT short-form versions.

The application of the Boston Naming Test (BNT) is time-consuming and shortened versions need to be developed for screening purposes. The aims of this study were to develop four equivalent 15-item forms of a Spanish adaptation of the BNT, to test the equivalence of the new versions in a clinical sample, and to provide normative data. The normative sample consisted of 340 subjects.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional state between normal aging and Alzheimer disease (AD). Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are computational tools that can provide valuable support to clinical decision making, classification, and prediction of cognitive functioning. The aims of this study were to develop, train, and explore and develop the ability of ANNs to differentiate MCI and AD, and to study the relevant variables in MCI and AD diagnosis.

Beta-amyloid controls altered Reelin expression and processing in Alzheimer's disease.

Reelin is a glycoprotein that modulates synaptic function and plasticity in the mature brain, thereby favouring memory formation. We recently reported altered cerebral Reelin expression in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we demonstrate pronounced Reelin changes at protein and mRNA levels in the frontal cortex in adult Down's syndrome (DS), where the extra copy of chromosome 21 leads to overexpression of beta-amyloid.
