We performed experiments to determine whether parenteral immunization with SA11 rotavirus can induce active protective immunity in a rabbit model of rotavirus infection. After one or two intramuscular injections of 1 ml of live or formalin-inactivated SA11 virus, we evaluated the mucosal and serologic immune response and protection from challenge with a high dose of live, virulent rabbit (Ala) rotavirus. Inactivated SA11 virus preparations, evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with a panel of VP4- and VP7-specific neutralizing and nonneutralizing monoclonal antibodies, did not show a loss of epitopes from the inactivation procedure compared with live virus.

The child with an excessive drooling problem often faces similar social deprivation to those with severe craniofacial malformations. Many of these children have other "strikes against them" (such as cerebral palsy) that, when coupled with drooling, isolate them from social interaction. Many methods have been employed to control drooling but surgery has been most consistently successful.

Distraction of the frontal bone outside the cranial plane using the Ilizarov principle was performed in 17 22-week-old New Zealand white rabbits. Five rabbits had frontal bone osteotomy only and were in the control group; 5 rabbits were placed in the sham control group and had frontal bone osteotomy plus application of a customized headgear appliance; and 7 rabbits were placed in the experimental group, which underwent frontal bone osteotomy application of the headgear and distraction. The frontal bone was elevated 1 mm every other day for a period of 8 weeks, and the animals were then killed.

Group 1 was treated with application of an Unna Boot that was changed every 7 days; Group 2 was treated with conventional dressing and antihistamines. Average time for complete wound closure was similar in the two groups: 32 days for group 1 versus 36 days for group 2.

The posteriorly based tongue flap can be very useful to close difficult palatal fistulas, especially because the palatal sling prevents dehiscence of the tongue flap. However, special techniques may need to be employed with very large palatal fistulas or severely scarred palates. This technique has been used successfully in 5 patients.

Both patients had bicoronal and bisphenoidal synostosis, extreme exophthalmic midface hypoplasia, and hydrocephalus. The limbs had a fixed flexion deformity of the elbows with broad thumbs which were radiopalmarly deviated; the toes were broad with a varus deformity and syndactyly toes 2-5.

A retrospective study was carried out on eight consecutively treated children, 2 to 14 years of age, seven with toxic epidermal necrolysis and one with transitional-type Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The body surfaces affected ranged from 40% to 100%. Seven of the patients were taking a sulfonamide or anticonvulsant before the onset of their disease.

This paper reports the use of microwave stimulation of mordants to shorten mordant time, minimize tissue loss or damage and improve the quality of the tissue staining.

Eight partial responses (26%), eight stable disease (26%), and 15 progressive disease (48%) were obtained. Patients with performance status (PS) 0-1 had a significantly better response rate than those with PS 2-3.

This technique could be used in any procedure in which a frontal bandeau is advanced and the forehead needs to be remodeled. By using microscrew fixation, the bulkiness of miniplates and wires is eliminated.

All patients had received previous chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and fluorouracil (CMF); cyclophosphamide, adriamycin and fluorouracil (CAF); or CMF and CAF. Partial response occurred in five patients (15 +/- 12%), stable disease occurred in 15 patients (45 +/- 17%) and progressive disease occurred in 13 patients (40 +/- 17%).

Methods: To assess the functional activity of a liver with solid metastases from primary colorectal cancer, antipyrine metabolism was studied after the drug was administered orally (18 mg/kg body weight) to 55 healthy volunteers, 62 patients with well-compensated cirrhosis, and 42 patients with small (Class A) or massive (Class B) metastatic liver involvement.
Results: In patients with cancer, antipyrine clearance (0.
One patient with a solitary plasmacytoma of the frontal bone was treated with complete surgical resection. To reconstruct the large calvarial defect, a split-thickness calvarial graft was harvested from the parietal area and secured in place with miniplates. Solitary plasmacytomas of the calvaria are not common.

When this syndrome was first diagnosed the patient was started on 6-methyl-prednisolone orally and after 4 days he developed a pruriginous generalized maculo-papular eruption. The rash disappeared 1 week after withdrawal of 6-methyl-prednisolone.

The effects of injury on peripheral nerve blood flow were studied, using a Laserflo blood perfusion monitor. A total of 11 nerves were studied, five normal and six injured nerves in four patients. Two of the patients had lacerating brachial plexus injuries, and two other patients had compressive neuropathies of their ulnar nerves at the elbow.

Both patients developed wide-spread, pruriginous, erythematous, maculopapular eruptions with fever and facial angioedema, 48 to 72 hours after starting diltiazem. Delayed hypersensitivity to diltiazem was suspected and the diagnosis was confirmed by skin patch tests followed by cutaneous biopsy.
