Evaluating a respiratory intermediate care team.

This article examines the work of a respiratory intermediate care team. Findings from an audit and a patient satisfaction postal questionnaire are presented to assess the effectiveness of the team's work and evaluate the effect of specialist nursing teams on hospital bed days and patient preference. From the evaluation it is apparent that the respiratory intermediate care team is an effective means of saving hospital bed days through prevention of admission and early discharge in patients with chronic respiratory disease.

Metastatic adenocarcinoma in the lungs of older laying hens.

As part of a study on ovarian and oviductal adenocarcinomas in older laying hens, 676 commercial egg-laying chickens were necropsied at 4 yr of age. Tumors were identified in 305 (45.1%) of the hens.

Partial characterization of an adenovirus-like virus isolated from broiler chickens with transmissible viral proventriculitis.

Transmissible viral proventriculitis (TVP) was experimentally reproduced in specific-pathogen-free chickens using a homogenate of proventricular tissue obtained from TVP-affected commercial broiler chickens. Thin-section electron microscopy revealed intranuclear, approximately 70-nanometer (nm), adenovirus-like viruses (AdLV) within proventricular lesions. The AdLV, designated AdLV (R11/3), could not be propagated using various avian and mammalian cell cultures or by inoculation of embryonated chicken eggs by yolk, allantoic, or chorioallantoic membrane routes.

Copper naphthenate treatments for engineered wood composite panels.

This paper reports on preliminary investigation of the properties of randomly oriented strandboard which had waterborne or powdered copper naphthenate incorporated into the board during manufacture. When compared to zinc borate-treated controls, the mechanical properties of strandboard were not adversely affected by treatment with either form of copper naphthenate. In general, values for mechanical properties followed the trend untreated controls > waterborne CuN = powdered CuN > ZnB.

Strain persistence and fluctuation of multiple-antibiotic resistant Campylobacter coli colonizing turkeys over successive production cycles.

The dynamics of colonization of turkeys by thermophilic campylobacters that are resistant to multiple antibiotics is poorly understood. In this study, we monitored cecal colonization of turkeys by Campylobacter over three successive production cycles at the same farm. Campylobacter isolated from the ceca was predominantly C.

Patients' perceptions of "uncertainty" in nurse practitioner consultations.

The aim of this qualitative study was to explore patients' perceptions of consulting with a nurse practitioner in situations of clinical uncertainty. Uncertainty in this context is defined as one where there is no obvious diagnosis, treatment or where the outcome of the consultation is not definite. Three general practice sites were recruited to participate.

Performance of copper naphthenate and its analogs as ground contact wood preservatives.

For several years, an extensive research program investigating new preservative systems has been ongoing at Mississippi State University. This paper details our continuing experience with field testing of copper naphthenate and other copper carboxylate preservative systems. Results from field stake tests at an AWPA Zone 4 test site are presented.

Campylobacter colonization of sibling turkey flocks reared under different management conditions.

Uncertainty exists concerning the key factors contributing to Campylobacter colonization of poultry, especially the possible role of vertical transmission from breeder hens to young birds. A longitudinal study of Campylobacter colonization was performed in two sibling pairs of turkey flocks (four flocks total). Each pair of sibling flocks shared breeder hen populations and was obtained from the same hatchery.

Clinical evaluation of rabies virus meningoencephalomyelitis in a dog.

A 6-month-old, female, mixed-breed dog presented for acute, progressive, flaccid paraplegia and bilateral pelvic-limb hyperesthesia. A lymphocytic pleocytosis with 366 mg/dL protein was found on cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) evaluation. Electromyography (EMG) demonstrated positive sharp waves and fibrillations in the left pelvic limb; the M wave of the left sciatic nerve was not obtainable by nerve stimulation.

Fragmented services, unmet needs: building collaboration between the mental health and domestic violence communities.

The Domestic Violence and Mental Health Policy Initiative (DVMHPI) is an innovative project to address the unmet mental health needs of domestic violence survivors and their children and to develop models that integrate clinical and advocacy concerns. Overseeing a network of more than fifty community-based mental health, domestic violence, substance abuse, and social service agencies, as well as city and state officials, the DVMHPI promotes collaboration and provides training and technical assistance to improve the capacity of local service systems to address the traumatic effects of abuse. This report highlights the importance of generating funding streams that promote collaboration.

Enhancement of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli pathogenicity in young turkeys by concurrent turkey coronavirus infection.

In a previous study, turkey coronavirus (TCV) and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) were shown to synergistically interact in young turkeys coinfected with these agents. In that study, inapparent or mild disease was observed in turkeys inoculated with only TCV or EPEC, whereas severe growth depression and high mortality were observed in dually inoculated turkeys. The purpose of the present study was to further evaluate the pathogenesis of combined TCV/EPEC infection in young turkeys and determine the role of these agents in the observed synergistic interaction.

A pilot study of a computer-assisted cell-phone interview (CACI) methodology to survey respondents in households without telephones about alcohol use.

An intrinsic drawback with the use of a computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI) survey methodology is that people who live in households without a connected landline telephone are excluded from the survey sample. This paper presents a pilot of the feasibility of a computer-assisted cell-phone interview (CACI) methodology designed to survey people living in households without a telephone about alcohol use and be compatible with a larger telephone based alcohol sample. The CACI method was found to be an efficient and cost competitive method to reach non-telephone households.

v-Src induces Shc binding to tyrosine 63 in the cytoplasmic domain of the LDL receptor-related protein 1.

We recently observed that the LDL receptor-related protein 1 (LRP-1) is tyrosine phosphorylated in v-Src-transformed cells. Using a GST-fusion protein containing the cytoplasmic domain of LRP-1, we show that LRP-1 is a direct substrate for v-Src in vitro. To study LRP-1 phosphorylation in vivo, we constructed an LRP-1 minireceptor composed of the beta chain linked at the amino-terminus to a Myc epitope (Myc-LRPbeta).

Creating meaning and value in substance abuse education.

Medical faculty committed to teaching about substance abuse face the challenges of teaching about a stigmatized disease. They often work with little support and few colleagues. These clinician educators must find tools to help sustain them in this work.

Hatchery and transportation factors associated with early poult mortality in commercial turkey flocks.

A prospective ecologic study, using routinely collected data from commercial turkey companies, was done of 312 turkey flocks placed over a 1-yr period. The objective was to identify hatchery- and transportation-associated risk factors for poult mortality in the first 14 d after placement using statistical models. Logistic regression was used to determine the effects of hatchery-and transportation-related factors on odds of mortality for hen and tom flocks separately.

Tuberculosis and poverty in the ethnic minority population of West Yorkshire: an ecological study.

The rising incidence of TB in the UK in the last decade has been attributed mainly to the persistently high TB rates amongst ethnic minority groups. The epidemiology of TB in these groups is presently poorly understood. The aim of this ecological study was to investigate the relationship between TB and poverty in the South Asian ethnic groups.

Prevalence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli in naturally occurring cases of poult enteritis-mortality syndrome.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) previously were identified in poult enteritis-mortality syndrome (PEMS)-affected turkeys and associated as a cause of this disease. In the present study, the prevalence of EPEC in PEMS-affected turkeys was examined retrospectively with archived tissues and intestinal contents collected from 12 PEMS-affected turkey flocks in 1998. Formalin-fixed intestinal tissues were examined by light and electron microscopy for attaching and effacing (AE) lesions characteristic of EPEC, and frozen (-75 C) intestinal contents were examined for presence of EPEC.

Mortality patterns associated with poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS) and coronaviral enteritis in turkey flocks raised in PEMS-affected regions.

Poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS) is an economically devastating disease. To date, many questions about the syndrome remain unanswered, including its cause, transmission of causative agent(s), and control methods. Turkey coronavirus (TCV) infection has been associated with some outbreaks of PEMS, with areas having a higher prevalence of TCV infection also experiencing an increased incidence of PEMS.

Kaupapa maori: explaining the ordinary.

This paper gives an overview of the kaupapa and processes of a Maori health research unit and it's researchers within the university environment. It begins with an understanding that research is often viewed with suspicion by Maori, is implicated in the process of colonisation and that Maori research has, in part, grown out of dissatisfaction with prevailing methodologies. Unfortunately this has also involved confronting the argument that there is no such thing as kaupapa maori research.

Social reactions to rape victims: healing and hurtful effects on psychological and physical health outcomes.

In this study, 102 rape survivors were interviewed about the social reactions they received from family and friends post-rape. Results supported Ullman's (1996b) conclusion that the overall contribution of positive social reaction (e.g.

Tyrosine-phosphorylated low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (Lrp1) associates with the adaptor protein SHC in SRC-transformed cells.

v-Src transforms fibroblasts in vitro and causes tumor formation in the animal by tyrosine phosphorylation of critical cellular substrates. Exactly how v-Src interacts with these substrates remains unknown. One of its substrates, the adaptor protein Shc, is thought to play a crucial role during cellular transformation by v-Src by linking v-Src to Ras.
