Nearshore seagrass, kelp, and other macroalgae beds (submerged aquatic vegetation [SAV]) are productive and important ecosystems. Mitigating anthropogenic impacts on these habitats requires tools to quantify their ecological value and the debits and credits of impact and mitigation. To summarize and clarify the state of SAV habitat quantification and available tools, we searched peer-reviewed literature and other agency documents for methods that either assigned ecological value to or calculated equivalencies between impact and mitigation in SAV.

Hydrophilic, untethered 1,4-naphthoquinones (1,4-NQs) are plant secondary metabolites that are often excreted into the environment and play a role in various plant-microbial, plant-fungal, plant-insect and plant-plant interactions. The biological activity of 1,4-NQs is mainly related to their redox properties, i.e.

Background: PR domain containing 16 (PRDM16) is a key transcriptional regulator in the development of craniofacial, adipose, and neural tissues. Our lab identified PRDM16 expression in the epithelial cells of the Kölliker's organ (KO) that starts at ~E13.5 and is maintained until KO disappearance.

Increasingly, research and management in natural resource science rely on very large datasets compiled from multiple sources. While it is generally good to have more data, utilizing large, complex datasets has introduced challenges in data sharing, especially for collaborating researchers in disparate locations ("distributed research teams"). We surveyed natural resource scientists about common data-sharing problems.

Background: For 2003-2008, ThedaCare, a community health system in Wisconsin, achieved significant improvements in quality and the elimination of waste through the development of an improvement system, which included Value Stream analysis, rapid improvement events, and projects applied to specific processes. However, to meet its continuous daily improvement goals, particularly the goal of increasing productivity by 10% annually, ThedaCare needed to change the way its managers and leaders (in its hospital division) conduct and manage their daily work. Accordingly, it developed its Business Performance System (BPS) to achieve and sustain continuous daily improvement.

Stillbirth is a professional blind spot for physicians and nurses, who may experience denial in dealing with the bereaved mother and her family. Providing choices and information about the conduct of labor and perinatal decisions, as well as pictures of the infant, a hospital birth certificate and other memory items, may be helpful to the parents in their grief. Hospital perinatal loss teams can provide support both to families and to medical staff.
