Analysis of the intervalence charge-transfer band displayed by its mixed-valence monocation affords a quantitative assessment of electronic delocalization through the Pt bridge; this is found to be only slightly smaller than that determined for a benzene-bridged analogue. These results are supported by density functional theory calculations, which show that the active orbitals involved in the electron-transfer process in both cases have similar delocalization through the bridging unit.

This multitechnique approach has enabled an in-depth understanding of the hierarchy of chirality transfer: from a single adsorbed molecule, to size-defined chiral clusters, and then to an overall chiral assembly. The data have indicated that the alanine is in its anionic form, bound to the copper surface through the oxygens of the ionized carboxylate group and the nitrogen of the neutral amino group.

We find two distinct TPA-active states with very different TPA cross-sections: the difference is explained on the basis of electron correlation. These effects, on the one hand, lead to TPA cross-sections of up to 500 x 10(-50) cm4 s photon(-1) for the state favored by correlation; on the other hand, they limit the overall cross-sections achievable in this class of materials.

Taking six diamines as examples, the UPS estimates for the electronic couplings H(ab) are compared with the corresponding values determined from the intervalence charge-transfer absorption bands and from electronic structure calculations. Similar trends are observed for the H(ab) values estimated from UPS and optical spectra; this provides support for the applicability of Hush theory to strongly coupled organic mixed-valence systems.

An immunopathological study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that idiopathic chronic cough is associated with lymphocytic airway inflammation.
Methods: Bronchoscopy, bronchial biopsies, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and peripheral blood and BAL flow cytometry were performed in 19 patients with idiopathic chronic cough, 14 with explained chronic cough, and 11 normal subjects.
Syntheses and X-ray structural investigations have been carried out for the two title compounds, viz. C(17)H(17)N(3)O(2), (I), and C(22)H(20)N(2)O(2), (II). The molecular skeleton of (I) is slightly non-planar; the dihedral angles between the conjugated linkage and the p-(dimethylamino)phenyl ring, and between the linkage and the p-nitrophenyl ring are 13.
