Background: Recombinant factor VII (rFVII) is an attractive agent to control refractory, coagulopathic bleeding in patients following major surgery. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the published experiences of rFVII in adult, nonhemophilic, surgical and trauma patients.
Methods: A computerized literature search was conducted to identify articles pertaining to rFVII use for refractory bleeding in adult, nonhemophilic, surgical patients.
The reaction with phenyl azide and [11C]carbon monoxide to give N,N'-diphenyl[11C]urea and ethyl phenyl[11C]carbamate has been studied with the aim of development of a new methodology for carbonylation using [11C]carbon monoxide with high specific radioactivity. The synthesis of 11C-labelled N,N'-diphenylurea from phenyl azide and [11C]carbon monoxide, with 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane-bound Rh(I) complex at 120 degrees C at a pressure of 35 MPa in the presence of aniline was accomplished in 82% trapping efficiency and 82% conversion yield. This approach was also useful for the synthesis of ethyl phenyl[11C]carbamate with lithium ethoxide as a nucleophilic reagent giving 90% trapping efficiency and 76% conversion yield.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods for quantification of HIV-1 p24 antigen have been relatively insensitive. In this report, we show data that indicate real-time immuno-polymerase chain reaction (IPCR), a combination of the ELISA and PCR techniques, is more sensitive for HIV-1 p24 antigen detection than other currently reported methods.

Unfortunately, this technique is fraught with procedural difficulties, and the quality of the data obtained from this "gold standard" assay may be inaccurate due to the subjective interpretation of the results. In the untreated (naive) rat, we previously found that NSIA depends on activation of dopamine, nicotinic acetylcholine, and mu- and delta-opioid receptors in nucleus accumbens. Rats chronically implanted with subcutaneous morphine pellets demonstrated tolerance to the antinociceptive effects of acute systemic morphine administration but did not show cross-tolerance to NSIA.

It is evident from these studies that thrombolytics significantly increase the amount of drainage from pleural effusions or empyemas. The effect on other outcome measures, such as length of hospital stay, days before defervescence, days with chest tube, surgical procedures, and mortality is questionable. The lack of randomized, controlled trials comparing streptokinase and urokinase makes a true comparison rather difficult.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the synthetic matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor, Galardin, on proteases produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and on a rabbit model of Pseudomonas keratitis.
Methods: Protease activities of culture broths from Pseudomonas strains PA-28 and W-186 were characterized in vitro by gelatin zymography and by digestion of Azocasein in the presence and absence of Galardin and the serine protease inhibitor, aprotinin. In a noninfectious in vivo experiment, sterile PA culture broth from W-186 was injected intrastromally into rabbit corneas that were treated topically with Galardin or vehicle, then evaluated clinically and histologically.
