This study sought to replicate and expand findings reported by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) on prognostic factors in resectable colon cancer. Mantel-Haenszel tests and the Cox model were used to analyze prognostic significance and effect of primary disease symptoms and tumor location in 572 patients from the Gastrointestinal Tumor Study Group (GITSG), with resected Dukes' B2 and C colon cancer. Tumor location (left, right, and rectosigmoid/sigmoid) was of low prognostic importance (P greater than 0.

Fifteen patients with histologically confirmed pancreatic carcinoma, without evidence of gastroduodenal invasion or obstruction, were prospectively studied to determine the frequency of gastric emptying disorders as determined by a solid-phase gastric emptying study. Nine of these (60%) had gastric emptying curves more than two standard deviations below normal mean values. The majority of patients did not have symptoms of gastric stasis.

The most common causes of acute pancreatitis are biliary tract disease and alcoholism, but other causes account for about 10% of cases. Acute pancreatitis can be divided clinically into mild and severe (necrotic) disease. Risk of complications and death varies with the etiology, severity, and number of episodes and is highest in severe cases and biliary tract-related disease.

Three hundred ninety-three patients who were entered into pancreatic carcinoma treatment protocols of the Gastrointestinal Tumor Study Group (GITSG) were analyzed as to significant differences in clinical presentation and factors influencing survival. Patients were grouped according to the stage of the disease. Group I (21 cases) included those patients who had a potentially curative resection.

The calcium content of the central one third of the skeleton was measured using neutron activation analysis in 109 patients with idiopathic calcium nephrolithiasis. The bone mineral content (calcium bone index or CaBI, corrected for body size) was significantly decreased by 5.2% in 20- to 60-year-old patients with calcium nephrolithiasis (p less than 0.

Although hypercalcemia is sometimes found in carcinoma of the prostate with osseous metastases, it is rarely seen as a paraneoplastic manifestation of this neoplasm. We present a patient with such a tumor in whom severe hypercalcemia developed in the absence of detectable osseous metastases.

Percutaneous aspiration should be performed on pancreatic/peripancreatic fluid collections when an abscess is suspected. Thirty-one percutaneous aspirations were performed on 21 such patients and seven (33%) proved to have an abscess. A Gram stain after the aspiration is important, as it can make an immediate diagnosis of an abscess.

Thirty-five patients with acute nonbiliary pancreatitis were studied with 99m-Technetium para isoproply iminodiacetic acid in order to determine its ability to differentiate acute nonbiliary pancreatitis from acute cholecystitis. Of acute nonbiliary pancreatitis patients 90.3% (28/31) visualized their gallbladder in 1 h, 9.

Five hundred patients with acute right-upper-quadrant pain underwent biliary scintigraphy with 99mTc paraisopropyliminodiacetic acid. One hundred and thirty-four studies were reported normal (both gallbladder and activity in bowel are noted in 1 hr). Of the 134 studies reported as normal, 32 showed intestinal activity before gallbladder visualization during the first hour of the study.

The relative contributions of high-dose irradiation and/or chemotherapy to the nutritional problems of patients with inoperable pancreatic carcinoma were evaluated by study of pancreatic exocrine function and jejunal function and morphologic findings in ten patients before and after treatment. Nutrient assimilation studies included determination of serum carotene levels, D-xylose absorption and fat absorption. Crosby capsule biopsy specimen of jejunal mucosa were evaluated with light microscopy.

Unlabelled: The pre-operative diagnosis of a pancreatic abscess was not considered in a comprehensive review in 1972. However, advances in technology (Ultrasound--US, Computed Tomography--CT) has allowed guided percutaneous needle aspiration (PNA) of suspected pancreatic lesions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and diagnostic ability of PNA to differentiate acute pancreatic inflammatory masses from pancreatic abscess (PA).

A prospective study was carried out in 60 patients to determine the efficacy of 99mTc-PIPIDA scintigraphy in differentiating biliary pancreatitis from nonbiliary pancreatitis. Forty patients were classified as having biliary pancreatitis and 20 patients as having the nonbiliary type. Scintigraphic scans were divided into five main types according to the time to visualization of the gallbladder and the time to excretion of 99mTc-PIPIDA into the intestinal tract.
