The evolution and phylogenetic relationships of the ticks at both the family and genus levels are contested. The genus Amblyomma and its subgenera are in a state of flux; moreover, the relationships among the three tick families are controversial due to conflicting phylogenetic support for different arrangements of the three families of living ticks. With 18 newly sequenced mitochondrial (mt) genomes of ticks included, we executed the largest mt genome phylogenetic study of ticks so far.

We present our current best estimate of the plausible observing scenarios for the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA gravitational-wave detectors over the next several years, with the intention of providing information to facilitate planning for multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. We estimate the sensitivity of the network to transient gravitational-wave signals for the third (O3), fourth (O4) and fifth observing (O5) runs, including the planned upgrades of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. We study the capability of the network to determine the sky location of the source for gravitational-wave signals from the inspiral of binary systems of compact objects, that is binary neutron star, neutron star-black hole, and binary black hole systems.

Collection System Investigation Microbial Source Tracking (CSI-MST) is a novel, sensitive approach for identifying sewer infrastructure deficiencies using molecular markers. This method requires both a detailed understanding of collection and conveyance system infrastructure and quickly turned around molecular data to advise an adaptive, targeted in-pipe approach to detect deficiencies. Here we explain the CSI-MST approach and provide several case study examples of how this approach can be adapted to different scale watersheds to identify potential sewer infrastructure issues.

Article Synopsis
  • On May 21, 2019, Advanced LIGO and Virgo detected a significant gravitational-wave signal known as GW190521, indicating a high probability event with a low chance of false alarms.
  • The signal suggests it resulted from the merger of two black holes, one around 85 solar masses and the other about 66 solar masses, with the primary black hole likely being an intermediate mass black hole.
  • The source of the merger is estimated to be about 5.3 billion light-years away, and the rate of similar black hole mergers is estimated to be about 0.13 mergers per billion cubic parsecs per year.

Despite broad calls for prevention programs to reduce adolescent dating violence (DV), there is a dearth of programs designed specifically for males. In fact, there are no programs that capitalize on the importance of parents in modeling and influencing the choices their sons make in future romantic relationships. To address these gaps, this study assessed the initial feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of an online, parent-son intervention (STRONG) aimed at reducing DV among early adolescent males.

Ventral tegmental area (VTA) neurons play roles in reward and aversion. We recently discovered that the VTA has neurons that co-transmit glutamate and GABA (glutamate-GABA co-transmitting neurons), transmit glutamate without GABA (glutamate-transmitting neurons), or transmit GABA without glutamate (GABA-transmitting neurons). However, the functions of these VTA cell types in motivated behavior are unclear.

There is a significant and growing research interest in the isolation of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from large volumes of biological samples and their subsequent concentration into clean and small volumes of buffers, especially for applications in medical diagnostics. Materials that are easily incorporated into simple sampling devices and which allow the release of EVs without the need for auxiliary and hence contaminating reagents are particularly in demand. Herein, we report on the design and fabrication of a flexible, microporous, electrochemically switchable cloth that addresses the key challenges in diagnostic applications of EVs.

A novel ultra high pressure liquid chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) method was developed to study glutathionyl and cysteinyl polysulfides in wine. Different HPLC columns were investigated in order to optimise the chromatographic resolution of the polysulfide standard mixtures synthesised in-house. The optimisation of the chromatographic conditions when trying to separate glutathionylated and cysteinylated species containing from 3 to 5 sulfur atoms proved particularly challenging, with the cationic exchange column IonPac CS12A-MS resulting to be the best column for this task.

With only 536 cases and 11 fatalities, India took the historic decision of a 21-day national lockdown on March 25. The lockdown was first extended to May 3 soon after the analysis of this paper was completed, and then to May 18 while this paper was being revised. In this paper, we use a Bayesian extension of the Susceptible-Infected-Removed (eSIR) model designed for intervention forecasting to study the short- and long-term impact of an initial 21-day lockdown on the total number of COVID-19 infections in India compared to other less severe non-pharmaceutical interventions.

In an effort to gain more understanding on the structure activity relationship of pseudoceratidine , a di-bromo pyrrole spermidine alkaloid derived from the marine sponge that has been shown to exhibit potent biofouling, anti-fungal, antibacterial, and anti-malarial activities, a large series of 65 compounds that incorporated several aspects of structural variation has been synthesised through an efficient, divergent method that allowed for a number of analogues to be generated from common precursors. Subsequently, all analogues were assessed for their antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive () and Gram-negative () bacteria. Overall, several compounds exhibited comparable or better activity than that of pseudoceratidine , and it was found that this class of compounds is generally more effective against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria.
