Background: Peak oxygen consumption (peak O) is traditionally scaled by body mass, but it is most appropriately scaled by fat-free mass. However, it is unknown whether peak O scaled by fat-free mass is associated with mortality and morbidity in people with a Fontan circulation. The aim of this study was to assess the associations between different expressions of peak O with mortality and morbidity in people with a Fontan circulation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to establish reference values for fetal 4D flow MRI and assess its reliability in measuring blood flow in healthy fetuses and those with suspected aortic coarctation (CoA).
  • Researchers conducted MRI scans on 34 pregnant patients, collecting data from both healthy fetuses and those with potential cardiovascular issues, analyzing the accuracy and consistency of the flow measurements obtained.
  • The results indicated that fetal 4D flow MRI provides reliable hemodynamic measurements with high precision and repeatability, although it tends to underestimate blood flow compared to traditional 2D phase contrast MRI techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated how levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) relate to fracture risk in older women, focusing on a group of 4,871 women aged 70 and above who weren't on specific medications.
  • - Results showed a positive correlation between higher SHBG levels and increased fracture risk over approximately 3.9 years, with those in the highest SHBG quartile being significantly more at risk compared to the lowest quartile.
  • - Although two genetic variants were found to influence SHBG levels, they did not correlate with fracture risk, indicating that the increased fracture risk associated with SHBG was not due to genetic factors.

Mycobacterium abscessus (MAB) is intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics, but the evolution of acquired drug resistance is poorly understood. We analyzed published genomes of 5,617 clinical MAB isolates from 20 countries and searched for signals of ongoing evolution in 35 drug-resistance-associated genes. Of these, we found 14 genes were subject to positive selection and identified novel mutational sites under selection.

Oligonucleotide therapeutics (ASOs and siRNAs) have been explored for modulation of gene expression in the central nervous system (CNS), with several drugs approved and many in clinical evaluation. Administration of highly concentrated oligonucleotides to the CNS can induce acute neurotoxicity. We demonstrate that delivery of concentrated oligonucleotides to the CSF in awake mice induces acute toxicity, observable within seconds of injection.

Introduction: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is an effective strategy for improving a variety of health and fitness outcomes within school settings. Incorporating HIIT into existing physical activity opportunities appears practically feasible, yet the process evaluation and effectiveness of this strategy needs to be further evaluated. Therefore, a intervention will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12-week school-based HIIT intervention on cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, body composition, muscular strength, bone health, cognitive function, wellbeing and academic performance among 12-13-year-olds.

The purpose of this study was to investigate neo-aortic curvature and diameter variation using the principal component analysis in patients who underwent a Norwood procedure for hypoplastic left heart syndrome. We further assessed whether neo-aortic curvature and diameter features are associated with clinical outcomes, single right ventricle function and flow hemodynamic patterns derived by 4D-Flow MRI. 55 patients with Fontan circulation who underwent a Norwood procedure in infancy underwent cardiac MRI as part of surveillance of their Fontan circulation.

Introduction Gender and sexually diverse (GSD) individuals disproportionately experience worse outcomes, bias, discrimination, and inequities in their care. Many avoid seeking healthcare due to fear of discrimination and mistreatment. One method for improvement focuses on specific GSD medical care training for undergraduate medical education (UME) learners.

Background: Since 2013, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has advanced a person-centered, Whole Health (WH) System of Care, a shift from a disease-oriented system to one that prioritizes "what matters most" to patients in their lives. Whole Health is predicated on patient-provider interactions marked by a multi-level understanding of health and trusted relationships that promote well-being. Presently, WH implementation has been focused largely in primary care settings, yet the goal is to effect a system-wide transformation of care so that Veterans receive WH across VHA clinical settings, including specialty care.

Age and sex may alter the cerebral blood flow (CBF) responses to acute isometric exercise, via associated elevations in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and sympathetic activation. Our aim was to determine the relationships between age, sex, and exercise intensity on cerebrovascular responses to isometric handgrip exercise. In 78 healthy adults (18-80 yr, = 42 females), cerebrovascular responses were assessed during 2-min isometric exercise bouts at three intensities [15, 30, 45% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)].

Despite the abundance and variety of rodent species worldwide, historically few have been used to study the neurobiology of social signaling. In recent years, the diversity of rodent behaviors has been leveraged to advance our understanding of neural circuits underlying social behaviors, and in particular those related to acoustic communication. Here we highlight recent work investigating vocal behaviors across social contexts in multiple rodent species and discuss how these studies reveal both shared and distinct neural circuits.

Article Synopsis
  • Hand eczema is a common skin problem that can be painful and make it hard for people to work, and there isn’t a clear treatment plan agreed on by doctors in the UK.
  • This study aimed to compare two treatments, alitretinoin and ultraviolet therapy, to see which works better after 12 weeks for patients with severe hand eczema that didn't improve with regular medicine.
  • The results showed that while both treatments helped, alitretinoin was less effective than ultraviolet therapy in reducing the severity of the eczema after 12 weeks.

Background: Aortic dilation is seen in pediatric/young adult patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), and hemodynamic markers to predict aortic dilation are necessary for monitoring. Although promising hemodynamic metrics, such as abnormal wall shear stress (WSS) magnitude, have been proposed for adult BAV patients using four-dimensional (4D) flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance, those for pediatric BAV patients have less frequently been reported, partly due to scarcity of data to define normal WSS range. To circumvent this challenge, this study aims to investigate if a recently proposed 4D flow-based hemodynamic measurement, abnormal flow directionality, is associated with aortic dilation in pediatric/young adult BAV patients.
