A Single-center Retrospective Analysis of the Effect of Radium-223 (Xofigo) on Pancytopenia in Patients with Metastatic Castration-resistant Prostate Cancer.

Introduction Radium-223 (Xofigo, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Inc., Whippany, NJ) has been shown to increase overall survival in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), via the phase 3 ALpharadin in SYMPtomatic Prostate CAncer (ASLYMPCA) study. Hematologic side effects of radium-223 included all-grade anemia in 31% of the patients, thrombocytopenia in 12%, and neutropenia in 5%, and persistent pancytopenia noted in 2%.

Atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome secondary to acute pancreatitis: a unique presentation.

Atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome (aHUS) is a disease of complement dysregulation and can be fatal if not treated in a timely manner. Although normally associated with triggers such as infection or pregnancy, this case demonstrates acute pancreatitis as the triggering event. The patient's initial presentation of thrombocytopaenia and acute renal failure was first attributed to a systemic inflammatory response syndrome due to pancreatitis, but with detailed history and further laboratory investigation, we were able to show that patient was having symptoms associated with aHUS.

Polyethylene glycol grafted polyethylene: a versatile platform for nonmigratory active packaging applications.

Unlabelled: Nonmigratory active packaging, in which bioactive components are tethered to the package, offers the potential to reduce the need for additives in food products while maintaining safety and quality. A challenge in developing nonmigratory active packaging materials is the loss of biomolecular activity that can occur when biomolecules are immobilized. In this work, we describe a method in which a biocompatible polymer (polyethylene glycol, PEG) is grafted from the surface of ozone-treated low-density polyethylene (LDPE) resulting in a surface functionalized polyethylene to which a range of amine-terminated bioactive molecules can be immobilized.

Manipulating interactions between functional colloidal particles and polyethylene surfaces using interfacial engineering.

The purpose of this study was to examine the interaction between lipid droplets and polyethylene surfaces, representative of those commonly used in food packaging. Lipid droplets with various surface charges were prepared by homogenizing corn oil and water in the presence of surfactants with different electrical characteristics: non-ionic (Tween 80, T80), cationic (lauric arginate, LAE), and/or anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS). The ionic properties of polyethylene surfaces were modified by UV-treatment.

The Highmark Pegasus Project report: characteristics of highly successful health plans.

The Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield Pegasus Project was created in the fall of 1996 to benchmark best practices at health plans around the United States through extensive interviews, literature searches, and other measures. Characteristics of highly successful health plans across a number of major categories are summarized in the final recommendations presented by this report.

A case of syncytial giant-cell hepatitis treated with an extracorporeal liver assist device.

Syncytial giant cell hepatitis (SGCH) has recently been reported to be a cause of severe hepatitis, with little chance of patient recovery without orthotopic liver transplantation. We have recently seen a patient with multisystem disease and histologic features of SGCH. Upon reaching stage IV coma, she was treated with an extracorporeal liver assist device containing 200 g of cultured liver cells.

Frequency of occurrence of various nuclear reactions when fast neutrons (approximately less than 50 MeV) pass through tissue-equivalent material.

Calculated results are presented for the frequency with which various partial nuclear reaction cross sections are utilized when fast neutrons (approximately less than 50 MeV) are transported through a tissue-equivalent phantom to obtain an indication of which cross sections are of most importance for radiotherapy applications and are therefore in need of experimental verification.

Saturation curve in gases of high atomic number at pressures up to 8 atm. I. Krypton and xenon.

The saturation curve has been studied in xenon and in krypton up to a pressure of 8 atm. An empirical formula has been found that describes the fraction of current collected over a wide range of voltages, pressures, ionization intensities, and electrode spacings. This is of practical value in the design of ionography chambers.
