Purpose: In previous studies, higher levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) have been reported to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, the anti-oxidative properties of red wine have been invoked to explain the paradox of low cardiovascular mortality, in spite of high-fat intake, in the French population. However, the distribution of ox-LDL-antibodies (ox-LDL-Ab) in the unselected population and its relationship with red wine consumption are unknown.

Here, washed human platelets were used to characterize the binding of [(3)H]2-AG to CB(PT), showing a dissociation constant (Kd) of 140 +/- 31 nM and a maximum binding (Bmax) of 122 +/- 10 pmol.mg protein(-1).

We investigated the role of three parameters: A) the culture medium (serum-free versus serum-dependent); B) the initial cell population (Ficoll-separated mononucleated cells versus CD34(+)-selected cells), and C) the low concentration of recombinant cytokines, flt3 ligand, and thrombopoietin in association with a basic cocktail of stem cell factor, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-3, GM-CSF, and erythropoietin. Eighteen leukapheresis samples were monitored in static culture for 15 days.

However, these agents are underused in clinical practice, especially in older patients with diabetes mellitus. The current literature shows that beta-blockers are at least as effective in older diabetic patients as in other patients, without major safety concerns for their possible adverse effects.

Inoculated tomatoes were sprayed with calcinated calcium, chlorinated water, or sterile distilled water (control) and hand rubbed for 30 s. Populations of E coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and L.

Here we show that at physiological concentrations estrogen activates the anandamide membrane transporter of human endothelial cells and leads to rapid elevation of calcium (apparent within 5 minutes) and release of nitric oxide (within 15 minutes). These effects are mediated by estrogen binding to a surface receptor, which shows an apparent dissociation constant (K(d)) of 9.

Background: Isolated systolic hypertension accounts for a substantial proportion of hypertension in individuals older than 65 years and is strongly associated with an increased risk of cardiac and cerebrovascular events. The exact mechanisms underlying the increased risk associated with ISH and elevated pulse pressure (PP), in comparison with HTN, have not been extensively investigated.
Stearoylethanolamide (SEA) is present in human, rat, and mouse brain in amounts comparable to those of the endocannabinoid anandamide (arachidonoylethanolamide, AEA). Yet, the biological activity of SEA has never been investigated. We report that SEA has the same effects as AEA on catalepsy, motility, analgesia, and body temperature of mice and that specific binding sites for SEA are present in mouse brain and are most abundant in cortex.

TSE strains are obtained by serial re-infection of infectious brain homogenates in laboratory rodents. They are characterized by strain-typical brain lesion profiles, which implies that they might be differentiated behaviourally as well.

This paper presents a case of rapidly growing vestibular schwannoma first treated by radiosurgery whose histopathology after surgical excision 42 months later showed malignant changes.

Here we show that, in a rat model of Parkinson's disease induced by unilateral nigral lesion with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), the striatal levels of anandamide, but not that of the other endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol, were increased. Moreover, we observed a decreased activity of the anandamide membrane transporter (AMT) and of the anandamide hydrolase [fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH)], whereas the binding of anandamide to cannabinoid receptors was unaffected.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis study was aimed at finding structural requirements for the interaction of the acyl chain of endocannabinoids with cannabinoid receptors, membrane transporter protein, and fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). To this end, the flexibility of the acyl chain was restricted by introduction of an 1-hydroxy-2Z,4E-pentadiene system in anandamide (N-arachidonoylethanolamine, AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) at various positions using different lipoxygenases. This brought about selectivity and attenuated the binding potency of AEA and 2-AG.

We present a case of metastatic oligodendroglioma causing extradural spinal cord compression at the level of the sixth thoracic vertebrae resulting in paraplegia. We discuss the routes of tumour dissemination and possible reasons for the rarity of cases of metastatic oligodendroglioma.

A rare case report of American leishmaniasis imported to Italy after a prolonged journey in Brazil is described, and discussed according to the recent epidemiologic, diagnostic, and clinical literature evidence. Since a delayed diagnosis and treatment of American leishmaniasis outside endemic areas is common (due to a low clinical suspicion), careful and timely consideration of tropical infections is warranted in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous lesions found in a European traveller.

Fibroblasts were grown in the presence or absence of CM and examined for the differentiation pattern by immunofluorescence and Western blotting procedures, for proliferation profile by Ki67 expression, and for apoptosis by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labelling technique. Monoclonal antibodies specific for non-muscle (NM), smooth muscle (SM) lineage and differentiation markers were applied to these cultures.

We aimed to see whether ACE inhibitors also prevent reduction in physical performance and in muscle strength in older women who do not have CHF.
Methods: We assessed 3-year rates of decline in both knee extensor muscle strength and walking speed in 641 women with hypertension who had participated in the Women's Health and Aging Study.
Background: Repeated administration of psychometric instruments frequently results in a higher score on retesting, the so-called training effect. Yet, a training effect has been poorly considered in longitudinal studies of cognitive changes in older persons.
Methods: We investigated the presence, magnitude and potential adjustments for training effect in the older participants of the Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Program (SHEP).
This study examines and compares the effect of aerobic and resistance exercise on emotional and physical function among older persons with initially high or low depressive symptomatology. Data are from the Fitness, Arthritis and Seniors Trial, a trial among 439 persons 60 years or older with knee osteoarthritis randomized to health education (control), resistance exercise, or aerobic exercise groups. Depressive symptoms (assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies--Depression scale) and physical function (disability, walking speed, and pain) were assessed at baseline and after 3, 9, and 18 months.

Therefore, we compared subjects with borderline ISH to subjects with diastolic hypertension (diastolic blood pressure > or =90 mm Hg) or ISH.
