This randomized trial compared weight loss during a 2-year period in response to three lifestyle interventions, all delivered by PCPs in collaboration with auxiliary health professionals (lifestyle coaches) in their practices.
Methods: We randomly assigned 390 obese adults in six primary care practices to one of three types of intervention: usual care, consisting of quarterly PCP visits that included education about weight management; brief lifestyle counseling, consisting of quarterly PCP visits combined with brief monthly sessions with lifestyle coaches who instructed participants about behavioral weight control; or enhanced brief lifestyle counseling, which provided the same care as described for the previous intervention but included meal replacements or weight-loss medication (orlistat or sibutramine), chosen by the participants in consultation with the PCPs, to potentially increase weight loss.
We previously identified SlFSM1 as an early fruit-specific gene encoding a short protein harboring a non-canonical SANT/MYB-like domain. Here, we investigated the role of FSM1 during fruit development in tomato and its mode of action. By analyzing tomato plants ectopically expressing FSM1, we established that it negatively affects cell expansion, particularly of those cells with the highest potential to expand, such as those residing inner to the vascular bundles in the fruit pericarp.

Even mild temperature stress, leading to partial damage to pollen viability can result in the production of under-fertilized puffy fruits of poor quality, while severe stress can abolish fruit set completely. We describe here a novel plant-specific gene, Lefsm1 (fruit SANT/MYB-like 1) harboring a single SANT/MYB domain. The expression of Lefsm1 is specific to the very early stages of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) fruit development. Ectopic expression of Lefsm1 results in severe developmental alterations manifested in retarded growth, and reduced apical dominance during tomato and Arabidopsis seedling development.

Here we present evidence on highly purified dihydrobenzophenanthridine oxidase from elicited S. canadensis cultures to indicate that this enzyme is the 77-kDa protein and that lower Mr bands include an isozyme(s) of the polyphenol oxidase family that copurifies with it.

An mRNA species, HVA1, has been shown to be rapidly induced by abscisic acid (ABA) in barley aleurone layers (Hong, Uknes and Ho, Plant Mol Biol 11: 495-506, 1988). In the current work we have investigated the expression of HVA1 in other organs of barley plants. In developing seeds, HVA1 mRNA is not detected in starchy endosperm cells, yet it accumulates in aleurone layers and embryo starting 25 days after anthesis, and its level remains high in these organs in dry seeds.

Using ammonium sulfate precipitates of cell lysates of cell line 1ECB and its parental cell line (WT), it was found that the mutant has an increase of 400 fold in (3)H-MTX binding capacity and a decrease in the affinity for MTX binding, at two orders of magnitude, in comparison with the WT. In addition, the DHFR specific activity in the mutant increased only moderately (5- to 10-fold), this activity is extremely sensitive to MTX inhibition as compared to the WT.
